Happy 250th birthday, The Sandwich - what's your favourite

Seems like it is 250 years since the Earl ordered the first sandwich.
Hard to choose a favourite... tinned salmon is pretty good, as are sardines. Tomato, avocado and a few basil leaves is a great combination.
If out, the Pret chicken and avo is my first choice.
What's yours?

Mine has got to be Chicken, garlic mayo and sweetcorn on mutli-seeded bread or cheap and cheerful egg mayo easily pleased me smile

I think mine would have to be tinned tuna (in sunflower oil, but drained), mayonnaise (not too much!) and sliced tomatoes with a sparing sprinkle of salt.

Mine is home made bread which I make so it is chewy, similar to Turkish bread, topped with pesto, avocado, Kalamata olives, oven roasted capsicum, mushrooms cooked in olive oil with garlic and spinach and fresh coriander. I sprinkle cracked pepper on the top. I love it and nothing is as nice for me. smile

Faye just my sort of thing - sounds lovely!

Apart from wanting that one, my favourite is always mozzarella and tomato, on ciabatta, slightly warm. But only from time to time; one slice of bread a day is my ration.

Faye Sun 13-May-12 05:36:03

Ariadne we could virtually enjoy a nice lunch together as we have similar tastes. smile

PRINTMISS Sun 13-May-12 07:50:37

I would just opt for crusty brown bread with a lovely strong cheese and Branston pickle - think perhaps that shows hold mundane I am.

Mamie Sun 13-May-12 07:50:58

Mmm - lots. Brie, bacon and cranberry; marmite and cream cheese; prawn, lettuce and mayo; cheese, chive and mayo; sausage and onion... how many calories so far?

JessM Sun 13-May-12 07:57:15

Not mundane "printmiss" to love a classic.

Butternut Sun 13-May-12 09:29:17

Tuna, cucumber, black pepper and mayo on multi-grain
Grated cheddar, spread of horseradish topped with crunchy lettuce.
Cold chicken, rocket, p&s. mayo
Anything with humous in
Grilled warm aubergines and crumbled feta with a dash of lemon juice and a sprinkle of parsley. (My current favourite).

Umm - hungry already! They all sound so tasty. smile

artygran Sun 13-May-12 10:19:03

Peanut butter and banana, closely followed by avocado with crisp streaky bacon on top (or underneath, depending on which way up you have the.... oh, never mind)!

absentgrana Sun 13-May-12 11:52:39

I love BLTs, bacon and avocado and prawns with mayonnaise or marie rose sauce.

Sidetrack
When I was recovering from emergency surgery the year before I married Mr absent, he visited me in hospital and I told him that I was very much in need of BLT. As I wasn't allowed to eat anything, he assumed that I was still muddled by morphine and gently corrected me saying that I meant TLC. Silly man, I meant BLT – they are his initials.

Mamie Sun 13-May-12 11:56:31

I forgot to add bacon and roquefort cheese.

sylvia1231 Sun 13-May-12 12:31:34

Melted cheddar cheese and hot fried mushrooms. First had in a Miami Shopping Mall. YumYum.

flump Sun 13-May-12 17:04:13

Chicken and cranberry on white farmhouse bread; mature cheddar and homemade chutney on seeded wholemeal; roasted vegetables on ciabatta or being very naughty, bacon or sausage and tomato sauce in a crusty roll.

vegasmags Sun 13-May-12 17:08:28

Egg and tomato; cold roast chicken with loads of butter and salt; crunchy peanut butter with thin slices of raw Bramley apple. Starting to feel really hungry now ...

Faye Sun 13-May-12 18:05:09

I don"t think I have a totally favourite sandwich , DH at lunchtimes asks what will we have and it is usually fish , so then we decide , he makes the best sandwiches in the world . , with crusts cut off . Although having said that we were at DS and DIL"s this weekend and DS made lunchtime sandwiches ,. and I have to say they were superb , just right , so maybe he has learnt from his dad [smile smile smile]

There's a lovely pub called 'The Sun' at Crook near Windermere. I don't need to read the menu, it's always their yummy 'Ham, Brie and Dijon mustard'. Mind you, the bowl of their chips alongside is another treat. DH goes for the Apple and Prawn Mayo.
At home a tomato sandwich with Heinz salad cream on white bread, transports me to summer picnics in the garden, many, many years ago.
Can a feel a trip to the kitchen coming on.
Rosie smile

Just about to make a sandwich of wholemeal bread spread with marmite, two slices of pork lunch tongue, with a bowl of lettuce, sliced onion, baby tomatoes, and celery with mayo on the side. Mmmmm
