Aldi store

I've just got back from Aldi, envious. I've been shopping there ever since it opened three weeks ago. Sorry Sainsbury's but my weekly shopping bill has gone down by over £20.

I still buy my meat from the local butcher and veg from the market but all the staples are now coming from Aldi

so far you like them?

Aldi in this country has excellent chocolate and biscuits. Dairy - yoghurt, butter and some cheeses. I get frozen fish there but don't eat meat, so can't comment about that. My son, who qualified as a chef, shops there almost exclusively. Lidl is, in my opinion, better for vegetables and fruit, though these are better bought from local shops. Oh and their ice cream is pretty good too. All I can say, envious, is: try it and see if it satisfies your needs.

I love their own brand names for some well known products. Their version of Lurpack is called Norpack and tastes just as good.

So far, envious, I like them very much.

Try their Moser Roth chocolate . Extra virgin olive oil. Pear cider, apple cider. Frozen desserts.

Ok! That sounds good! I already go two three different stores for everything. aldi is small but if I can save money I'll go. I've been reading how prices have gone up where you are.Its the same here.

Envious the Aldi over there are exactly the same as over here , low prices , no frills the only thing they do not sell wine, spirits ,beers as we do .
I was surprised to see them so had to have a gander . Whether they match Walmart not sure ? , but they are cheaper than some of the other grocery stores .

Give them a whirl , you have nothing to lose .

We buy all our fruit and vegetables at Aldi and save a fortune. Quality not bad either.
I love mooching up and down the centre aisles for all the odd stuff that comes in. Plants not bad and we bought a mini greenhouse for seedlings recently.

Not as posh as Sainsburys but we are trying to cut our bills. Don't dare to buy
unknown brands generally.

The amazing choice of shops I have here is either Waitrose or Coop...nothing to chose between them price wise, both very expensive when on a tight budget as I am. So 'lucky you' LullyDully

Hello Envious I live in Germany and Aldi is a German firm It was started by two brothers Albrecht and Di?. I think one has died lately, but they are the richest men in Germany. Their wealth is built on the idea that they sell far fewer goods but they are good quality and exellent value for money. In Germany you do your ALDI shop and then you go to the other supermarkets for other things or to the baker and the butcher.

Most people have a mental list of ALDI things and walk swiftly up the aisles collecting these things and then out! Shopping finished. A lot of things are German and many milk products are sold by other German firms for more money but are the same.
My list.
cat food, washing powder, dishwasher tabs, some cosmetics, lean beef mince,
Parmasan cheese, liver wurst, Nurenberg sausages, Bio -milk,cream, sour cream, yoghourt, quark and butter.

Stollen at Christmas time

I shop there every week! Really good quality, no frills, value for money.

My nearest Aldi is a bit too far away to use regularly, but we do have a Lidl that we use at least once a week.

I love it, products such as their W5 washing up liquid, far better than Fairy and much cheaper. They also have named brands on offer, recently it was a large jar of Nescafe instant coffee that was over a £1 cheaper than Morrisons, who were actually proclaiming it as a "special" offer.

I have also bought fresh meat from Lidl, their rump steak is consistently good. chicken thighs ( lots more meat on them than drumsticks) at around £2.25 a kilo, and they do "proper" parmesan cheese at a very good price!

PS The brand of coconut milk they sell "Vitasia", is so much better than others that I've tried!

Envious there was a thread that was sort of about this, i.e. asking for recommendations for own brand products not so long ago, it ended up being a pretty long list, with quite a few Aldi products in there, might be worth tracking it down?

(I would but I'm desperate for a wee, and no doubt by the time I come back someone will have found it!)

phoenix Is the coconut milk in Lidl the sort you put in curries or the sort you drink?

Well, Ella it's in a can, and I have only ever used it when making certain curries, but I suppose there is no reason why you couldn't add it to smoothies etc.?

There is no apostrophe there!!!

I get my husband the dark chocolate marzipan little eggs, he loves them. Also loves the ones from Lidl. Germany makes great marzipan sweets, and he is safe in the knowledge that I won't pinch them - don't like them myself.

Also, I've bought the bunches of tightly furled roses in gold and cream, and they last better than many supermarket roses, at least 2 weeks, and cost (I think) £2 per bunch.

we have a Trader Joes! I like their prices and products.Their stores are small and only stock what sells well.

I do have to say I'm not expecting to see venison at the Aldi.I read the other thread and you do eat a few things I don't expect to see.Also my state is just now trying to get wine in grocery stores. You have to buy it in stores just for liquor and wine.

I forgot about Aldi's flowers - they last for ages! The cheapest are about £1.79 a bunch.

They have some good plants and are very cheap, they always seem to take, unlike some.
