Pancake sacrilege!

Evening all, hope everyone is well.

With Shrove Tuesday nearly upon us, my thoughts turn to........pancakes!

A visit to the supermarket showed various items being promoted as being "perfect for pancakes". These included squeezy golden syrup and various types of chocolate spread.

Yesterday's Daily Telegraph included such suggestions as parmesan and spinach or rhubarb and blood Orange.shock

stop it RIGHT now!

Pancakes should be served with lemon juice and sugar, and preferably made by someone who can make them faster than I can eat them. grin

Glad to see that there are many votes for "proper" ones! wink

its scotch pancakes her ,or drop scones as some call them ,no lemon and sugar its not traditional its butter or jam or honey or golden syrup .I made 3 dozen this morning with two of my grandaughter ,who stood beside me and ate them hot off the girdle panl

Norah Sun 26-Feb-17 20:56:48

We pour over melted butter and berry syrup still hot from cooking.

Someday GC tastes will become less pedestrian. grin

I'm a simple woman with simple tastes. Pancakes need just a sprinkling of sugar and nothing else.
My late mother in law made the best drop scones ever. She made them on the Aga, directly on the hotplate over the oven with the lid left up until it was just the right temperature. I don't make a bad one myself by the way.

It has always been golden syrup and lemon juice for me; caster sugar and orange juice for DH, as per family tradition. I will make pancakes for GS's breakfast tommorrow but he will have blueberries and maple syrup on his.

Galen Sun 26-Feb-17 22:29:51

Sacrilege! Lemon juice and. Caster sugar
I won't be having them as I'm on my own!?

Chewbacca Sun 26-Feb-17 22:45:32

You can still have them Galen, it simply means you won't have to share them! Winner!

Moocow Sun 26-Feb-17 22:53:25

Oh no hilltopgran I've been revisiting my MMB cookbooks and now have several pages marked!

Sugar and lemon juice for ours - the only way to enjoy this once a year treat.

Jalima Sun 26-Feb-17 23:11:24

Lemon and sugar for me
but DH likes marmalade (he is a bit strange grin)

SueDonim Sun 26-Feb-17 23:14:35

Sugar & lemon for me, with a token one with golden syrup on. They must be thin crepes, too. No drop scones or scotch pancakes are permitted on Shrove Tuesday.

Dh is the pancake maker in this house. He has a new crepe pan he's itching to put to work so he'll be busy making two pancakes at a time on Tuesday. grin

Dare I say... I do not like pancakes no matter what they are disguised with smile

Eloethan Mon 27-Feb-17 01:09:49

I too like lemon and sugar on pancakes. I recall strawberry jam being quite nice too, though I haven't had this since I was a child.

gillybob Mon 27-Feb-17 07:39:36

A little drizzle of Golden Syrup and a blob of (good quality) dairy ice cream on the side. Food heaven for me.

NanKate Mon 27-Feb-17 08:25:32

I'm a traditionalist so sugar and lemon for me too.

I remember one Shrove Tuesday in the 1950's my dear old Mum had made her usual delicious pancakes which we scoffed down. There was some batter left over at the end and she made one last pancake that came out thick and inedible, always one for a bit of fun she let my sister and I bat it up and down the hallway, tennis style, to squeals of laughter. Happy days. grin

No it's got to be maple syrup for me, my Mum used to put currants in with the batter yuck!

goose1964 Mon 27-Feb-17 10:13:24

the only way I could eat them was drowned in golden syrup (from a tin) I have diabetes now so can't eat them anyway

Terrystred Mon 27-Feb-17 10:14:13

Lemon and sugar all the way for me, but when my DD was little she loved pancakes so much she had them as a first course with chicken, broccoli and mushrooms, followed by lemon and sugared ones for pudding!

Skweek1 Mon 27-Feb-17 10:23:29

We have buckwheat pancakes with hot dogs and ratatouille and home made steak house chips; love all pancakes, but I'm the only one who ever has a dessert during the week, so it's always our standby savoury!

Lilyflower Mon 27-Feb-17 10:27:17

Phoenix, how right you are. Sugar and lemon juice. It is the law.

David1968 Mon 27-Feb-17 10:59:46

As our DS and family are American, for some years I've been making American pancakes - which I find easier to cook than European ones. (Like a big Scotch pancake.) Personally I like lemon and sugar, but I say each to their own, so long as the pancake tradition continues.

JackyB Mon 27-Feb-17 11:05:58

A Russian colleague brought some pancakes into work the other day and put out various jams and - wait for it! - a tin of condensed milk to spread on them. Sticky and sweet.I never want them any other way again! (Except savoury)

HannahLoisLuke Mon 27-Feb-17 11:13:45

Lemon and sugar for me too, although I do like a savoury filling of smoked haddock in a cheese sauce occasionally.

TriciaF Mon 27-Feb-17 11:29:17

Mushroom pancakes are good too.
I once tried cheese blintzes - you fill each one with a cream cheese and lemon filling, turn ends in , roll them up and refry. Joint side down first. Nice but fiddly.

I said rather grimly to DH that I bet the food police will want us to use kale. Don't look now Phoenix www.abelandcole.co.uk/recipes/fluffy-kale-pancakes-with-tahini-butter.
I had a book of pancakes when dd1 and 2 were small. A poorly child and as skinny as a rake could put away a pile of pancakes. I still make them for her family for breakfast.
And we are a sugar and lemon family but the children are allowed raspberry jam.

Lupatria Mon 27-Feb-17 12:13:32

sugar and lemon juice - is there any other way?
although daughter and grandaughters will probably choose something else.
sacrilege this year is that we will be buying our pancakes!! daughter is working quite late and i can't cook at the moment [can't stand long enough to even cook one!] so i hope they'll taste ok. not happy though!
