Pancake sacrilege!

Evening all, hope everyone is well.

With Shrove Tuesday nearly upon us, my thoughts turn to........pancakes!

A visit to the supermarket showed various items being promoted as being "perfect for pancakes". These included squeezy golden syrup and various types of chocolate spread.

Yesterday's Daily Telegraph included such suggestions as parmesan and spinach or rhubarb and blood Orange.shock

stop it RIGHT now!

Pancakes should be served with lemon juice and sugar, and preferably made by someone who can make them faster than I can eat them. grin

And I remember going to a Lyons Corner House back in the '60s, where they served 3 small pancakes in a stainless steel boat shaped dish, swimming with maple syrup and topped with a mound of fresh cream. Absolute bliss!

I put a tin of Chicken Supreme in a pancake (savoury) followed by the usual lemon and sugar and butter for afters.

I'm partial to maple syrup but it's so bloody THIN...

Indinana Yes, I remember those as well, they were just delicious ( I was a size 10 in those days and could eat anything I liked.)

Golden syrup on pancakes, with double cream is pretty good as well.

I live on the Continent and we have pancakes often, usually with jam, rolled up. Children like theirs with a chocolate spread. Savoury fillings, too, are common, spinach, mushrooms, cheese, whatever. The lemon juice and sugar variety is not so well known, perhaps in a fancy restaurant. My mother used to sometimes cut pancakes into strips and have them as an accompaniment to a meat dish (instead of rice or potatoes). In Croatia I have come across pancakes filled with ham and cheese, then cut into halves, coated in egg and breadcrumbs and deep fried. Delicious but very fattening. Would someone perhaps be able to share a pancake recipe that doesn´t include milk and eggs? My son is a vegan and I would love to be able to make pancakes for him. I have tried many times but they never turn out right, milk can be substituted for soy, but the hold-together factor of the egg is still missing, they disintegrate. Any ideas?

I can't bear lemon ( too many bottles of Mist Pot Cit when younger) so it's butter and sugar or golden syrup for me

I grew up having jam on my pancakes but now, because we only have them once a year at most, I have them with chocolate sauce, ice cream and a pshshshsh of squirty cream.

HAPPY SHROVE TUESDAY smile enjoy your pancakes, however you eat them.

Am a lemon and sugar or syrup traditionalist myself - but this year will be making the pancakes with olive oil and buckwheat flour so as not to upset the stomachs of wheat and dairy intolerant friends! (Buckwheat is from a plant related to rhubarb and not anything to do with wheat at all).

If you have any leftover pancakes, by the way, in Germany they would be cut into thin strips (as Polyester describes, above) and served in soup (thin broth). They're fond of their little bits in the soup: Marrow dumplings, semolina dumplings, potato dumplings, egg - raw or solidified and cut into tiny cubes.

We just ate the lot. Spelt flour and goat milk, sugar and lemon. I forgot to put a little baking powder to make them a bit lighter, but it didn't matter much!

I'm very proud of my efforts this morning. I made pancakes, actually they were drop scones. Nothing special in that, but I made them with gluten free flour and soya milk for my DD and grandchildren. I'd never attempted to make gluten free ones before. They were delicious.

Had grandson (7yr old) here after school. Had made batter up in the morning and he squeezed the lemon juice which I put into a milk jug and left him in charge of assembling the pancakes. He was a bit heavy-handed with the sugar but no one was watching us!! DH is now asking why we only that this once a year!!

jacq10 Tue 28-Feb-17 21:58:41

"only have this once a year"

roses - those Lyons Corner House pancakes - if I remember rightly they actually called them 'flapjacks', but anything less like a flapjack and more like a pancake would be hard to find grin

If you have any leftover pancakes, by the way

What does that mean? grin grin grin grin grin

I've never heard of leftover pancakes either....and we always use every last bit of batter so the last pancake is more like a lace doily! Funny how my darling Mum always had the first one...the thick rubbery one and then the lacy one at the end.....we had the rest!
