Strange but good flavour combinations.

Last night I was at a friend's band concert. In the interval we queued for tea/coffee and home baking. I picked up my coffee and moved on to what I thought was a carton of milk - but as I poured I realised that it was apple juice. Not possible to go back, so I just sploshed in some milk too and decided to ignore the taste of apples. However, it was surprisingly pleasant! Have you ever tried an unexpected mix of flavours that turned out to be successful?

Can I just say, I thought cheese and fish was a long-established combination?

For breakfast I spread half a slice of toast with marmite and the other half with honey and the 2 sometimes get mixed on the knife (which I lick off of course) - and it's surprisingly nice!

Sort of sweet-and-sour.

Smithy - no one told Baileys! They put it in chocolate truffles!
I've always enjoyed a crusty baguette with ripe Brie or Camembert and banana. GD aged about 10 discovered she liked the combination too. Her cheese had to be Cornish Brie however, a Somerset Brie was once accepted but no French Brie! Also her salami must be Milano! She's now at college on a catering course!

An American visitor once introduced me to peanut butter and jelly (jam) sandwiches. I then introduced him to marmalade, he liked it very much. I do enjoy marmalade and peanut butter.
I once waved off DD on a school trip to Stratford from Wales having asked the teacher if she could sit at the front in case she was travelsick. When I met the coach many hours later she'd been fine but the teacher told me that she thought someone who dipped salt and vinegar crisps in rhubarb yogurt deserved to be ill!

Mmm on the subject of savoury and banana - I just remebered I used to enjoy a local combo of wholemeal roll with banana, cottage cheese and peanut butter - yum!

Yes, elegran - but more sweet and salty a la popular popcorn these days I gather..

A small cafe near here serves grilled bacon on hot buttered fruit tea cakes.
A friend tells me they are delicious. I haven't tried them myself.

" peanut butter and marmite." Me too Elegran. On hot toast.
I also like the combination of fruit and savoury in meaty dishes. eg sausages baked with onion and apple.

Gosh, did any chef really say that fish and cheese did not go together? Throughout my long life fish and cheese have always gone together like bread and butter or eggs and bacon.

When preparing for D of E award hikes, my fellow ranger guides and I were told that chocolate and apple sandwiches were a good idea. I agree. Even easier now with Nut3lla

A sandwich making competition was won a few years ago by someone making gorgonzola and strawberry sandwiches. I tried it and it was lovely. I, too, used to mix bananas with cottage cheese[on Ryvita] in the early years of my 'neverendingdiet' as it was the only way I could stomach cottage cheese. I don't like it with pineapple, though.

Cheddar cheese and fruitcake is lovely. Also a nice soft brie on a sandwich with sliced apple.

Scones with cream cheese (like philly) and raspberry conserve. Yummy!

Rice cake marmite and plain cottage cheese, lovely

Imperfect27 Wed 11-Oct-17 08:26:23

Peanut butter and any type of jam for me. Cream cheese and marmite on crumpets ... Not very adventurous, but yum!

I bake white fish in the oven (or grill it) with sliced bananas on top. Slice the bananas longways then it seems less weird! Yummy.

BlueBelle Thu 12-Oct-17 17:53:24

Or sorry no edit and cheese and jam or honey sandwiches

Branson pickle and peanut butter sandwiches, oh YUM.

BBbevan Wed 13-Dec-17 18:42:38

Cheese sandwich dipped in hot chocolate. Don't know where it came from but I can remember having it as a child and loving it .

Greyduster Wed 13-Dec-17 18:59:34

Peanut butter and banana for me. And smoked mackerel with beetroot and creme fraiche.

midgey Wed 13-Dec-17 19:05:45

Menopaws, try a slice of cucumber on top of your marmite and cottage cheese. Stilton cheese and Christmas cake is delish!

Jalima1108 Wed 13-Dec-17 19:58:24

I saw Rick Stein making a chicken dish with chocolate sauce last night - apparently a Mexican speciality usually made with turkey.
However, I don't think I'm going to try it.

Fish and cheese sauce? A classic!

Bathsheba Wed 13-Dec-17 20:18:39

Always do a fish pie in a cheesy sauce, and then top it off with a mixture of breadcrumbs, grated cheese and chopped parsley and pop it under the grill to crisp off.

I've never understood the poached haddock with a poached egg on top
Haha, I've just finished eating this! Well, at least, it wasn't poached haddock, but steamed smoked cod. Same difference though wink. One of my all time favourite dinners, along with gammon in onion sauce.

Greyduster Wed 13-Dec-17 20:26:28

I have to say that I love smoked haddock and poached eggs but have always avoided eating them together, until we stayed in a hotel in Norfolk last year and I was offered the dish for breakfast. It was a revelation, and a combination I have eaten ever since.
