Following on from the comfort food thread. Bread was a favourite for many when ill .
What's your favourite bread?
Where's the best crusty bread to be found?
I discovered lidl crusty cobs over Christmas. On a mad dash to Sainsburys extra i stopped at Lidl instead and discovered this crusty treat. My family thought it delicious too.
I'm a suckered for local bakers sourdough as well.

My own wholemeal bread. Flour from Dove's Farm, 70% brown 30% white. Plus a tablespoon of black treacle to 1kg flour. I use a machine with a dough hook for kneading.
I would like to try sourdough, but haven't the patience.

overthehills Hope you mean you're disappointed about the Mother's Pride plain and not that I have offended you in some way!confused

Lidl crusty loaf with butter and strawberry jam is delicious. We like the morning rolls too .

I'm not sure what the attraction of Tiger Bread is, don't find it anything special confused

Fresh bread from my local Baker's

Co-op speciality breads, vintage cheese & onion, rye, ? & beetroot (can't remember other ingredientgrin), sage & onion (at Christmas), jalepino. They are more expensive but I can use a loaf without it going mouldy. Vintage cheese & onion always smells lush & toast beautifully with lashings of Lurpak.

Sorry MrsAllboys - no it was the Mother’s Pride - I wouldn’t shoot the messenger! smile

I'm addicted to warm crusty bread (with Country Life Spreadable, of course!) and I will only buy Tiger or Crusty Bloomer from Tesco, Lidl or the Co-Op.
I find Sainsbury's bread really dry and avoid it if possible!

Poly580 Fri 16-Feb-18 19:22:31

Ooh fresh bread ?
I love making bread..... trouble is then I love eating it too.
If I buy it I love Cranks organic from Sainsbury’s. I slice it and freeze it so there is no waste. Yummy toasted with poached egg. I have given upon the butter spread and gone back to the old block. Some lovely organic ones of those around too.

I love bread but it doesn't like me but sometimes I put up with the discomfort wink

MrsAllboys, Overthehills, just seen this tragic news! I am going up to Glasgow at the end of March and thought that we could bring back a couple of loaves of Mothers Pride and freeze them but I may be too late.!

We were only in Bristol visiting friends, and they told us how good Hart's is, so we trundled along there.
We live 194 miles from Bristol, so I don't think we'll be making any visits especially to visit Hart's!
We usually drive there, if we leave really early (before 5-30 a.m.) we get the journey done in about four hours, whereas getting from our tiny station to the main line takes 40 minutes, then another three and a half hours, with a change at Stafford.
The train journey makes the M6/M5 look quite appealing!

DH makes the best bread ever using Duchy Organic Malted Grain flour. The state he leaves the kitchen in afterwards is another matter altogether........

I don’t eat much bread but I have some as a treat at the weekend and it has to be nice.

I used to buy Tesco’s honey and sunflower artisan loaf which knocked everything else into a cocked hat but they discontinued it and their subsequent ‘fancy’ bread is awful. Local bakery artisan bread is nearly £4 a loaf and I am not paying that,

Soooo.... I had a packet of spelt, brown flour in the cupboard
for some reason and it had a recipe for ‘Roman bread’ on the back. I found I had the very simple ingredients in my cupboard and, as an experiment, made a loaf, the first for forty years since school cookery lessons.

Reader, I married it. It was lovely and only just over a quid a loaf. I make two of these loaves every Friday now and freeze what is left over for the week.

The pleasure of kneading and baking is wonderful and everyone loves the bread. I have save £££££s over buying the equivalent.

Applegran thank you for that - I am going to look out for it!

I saw some bread that looked so tempting at the M5 services near Gloucester - from the Hobbs House Bakery in The Cotswolds. It looked delicious but I can't vouch for the taste as it wasn't gf (they may make some but there was none there).

Overthehills Fri 16-Feb-18 21:21:05

Niobe could your friends feeeze a couple of loaves for you to take home? I’ll be emptying my outside freezer for some!

Mercedes55 Fri 16-Feb-18 21:22:37

The best bread I've had was the sourdough that I used to make myself after buying a jar of mother culture online a few years ago. It tasted delicious, even if I say so myself lol!

However it started to get a bit tedious making it. From start to finish it could take me 2 or 3 days to get the culture to double in size so that it was active enough to use and I just got fed up of having to feed it daily so stopped.

I still have all the equipment, so may go back to it one day, who knows wink

We have a small local independent bakery chain near me and their low GI multi-seed bread is the absolute best.
I'm also quite partial to my own version of Irish soda bread, (taken from an Irish recipes tea-towel!) made with 2/3 wholemeal to 1/3 unbleached white flour, buttermilk or plain yoghurt, salt , tsp of sugar and a small knob of butter or lard.

Any baguette fresh from a boulangerie in Paris! Their flour is different....

My husband's hot crusty bread is the best ever not to mention his buns! He bakes all the bread in our house in his trusty bread maker. Delicious!

Pittcity Sat 17-Feb-18 10:58:06

DH loves Tesco Salt and Pepper stick. I think it's the seasoning that makes it tasty as the bread is pretty average.
I don't really have a favourite bread but don't see the point of thin sliced!

trooper7133 Sat 17-Feb-18 12:29:57

Rosemary and potato bread from Gail’s bakery is absolutely yum

Nelliemoser Sat 17-Feb-18 12:41:22

The bread from my Panasonic bread maker.
There is a five hour proving time that allows the yeast to properly mature and bring out the malty flavour of the bread. Much shorter baking times does not allow that flavour to develop.

loopylou Sat 17-Feb-18 13:29:26

French baton from Bertinet bakery in Bath, followed by their sourdough loaf.
Nothing beats them!

Applegran Sat 17-Feb-18 17:57:18

I'm glad you liked the look of the bread and bakery I posted about, Jalima1108! Mark's Bakery and Mark's bread are really delicious - and I am fairly sure they will post bread to you. I wrote about their delicious and healthy gluten free bread - they only sell it on Tuesdays and Fridays, and sometimes sell out even on those days. They do other artisan bread and are very highly regarded in the area. I hope you enjoy it!

Lidl Farmhouse wholemeal multiseed, 79p for 800gm.

Great value (other comparable loves can be twice the price) and absolutely delicious. We have it toasted every morning, either with banana or boiled egg.
