What are your 3 ‘go to’ family suppers?

I made dinner last night and got to thinking of my usual favourite suppers that I make on a fairly regular basis. Nothing fancy (as for a special occasion) just ordinary dinners.

Mine are:

1. Chilli & rice
2. Hungarian goulash a la Delia
3. a pork, apple, sage & onion dish topped with cheesy mash and served with green cabbage.

What are yours?

Though I’ll probably do it with low fat fromage frais cos my DH won’t eat full fat cream - always keeping an eye on his BP wink

Thanks BB for cabbage idea. We eat cabbage a lot (adds a healthy green tinge to the complexion grin).I tend to just braise it with butter and throw in things like walnuts.

Bathsheba, I suppose low fat fromage frais would do. However because the recipe is directed to those who eat low-carb, full fat cream is used for both protein and energy.

Most recent set of dinner basics:
1. Some type of chilli beans with short brown rice
2. Some type of spanakopita with (usually) salad
3. Some variation of roasted veg with baked potatoes (or just stir in orzo at the end) and cheese/cottage cheese
4. Soup. Any kind. And often.

Here you go phoenix. -

Pork & Apple serves 4

800g pork (I used to buy diced but last week tried loin steaks cut in half and everyone agreed tasted nicer!)
2 chopped onions
2 large baking apples peeled and thick cut
2 teaspoons dried sage
3 tablespoons of water

Put all that into a flat Pyrex dish, cover with foil and oven cook 170° for 90 minutes.

In the meantime make a pan of mashed potatoes & I add good amount of grated strong cheese.

Remove foil, spread over the pork/sage and onion with the mash and put in oven for about 20 mins. I often put the mash on earlier in the day and then put it in the oven when we want to eat. It’s nice with dark green cabbage.

Goodness I am both impressed and amazed at all your versatility. I am doubly relieved at the sometimes confession of laziness. My 'go to' snacks would always be the more exotic filled rolls of egg or bacon. Yes this is lazy if you like but it is so instant and I salivate at the very thought. A little offset to my (pretend) shame is that I pretty much always have my own soup on the go. More salivating! Hats off to all of your inventiveness. My days of that are long gone.

Urmstongran Thu 24-Jan-19 10:47:06

Actually Scribbles when you think about your Pan Heggerty (thank you by the way for how to make it) it’s not THAT different from my pork & apple! Both use potatoes, onion and cheese. Yours has bacon as a side and mine has pork. Variations on a theme! I just need a name for my dish....

newnanny Thu 24-Jan-19 10:48:53

Boiled ham joint, mashed potatoes, carrots and peas.
