I’m making Mary Berry’s sausagemeat lasagne (again !) for a couple of friends tonight. Any interesting thoughts about what to serve with it ? ( Garlic bread disagrees strongly with me)

Lucca

Yes, but I’d like an interesting one !

How about crisp cos lettuce, sundried tomatoes and snow peas (mangetout?) with a balsamic dressing

or

Lettuce, roasted pumpkin, roasted beetroot and either feta or cream cheese cubed with dressing

or

Mixed lettuce, variety of different coloured cherry tomatoes, largish cubes of baguettes rubbed with garlic and oil and toasted then tossed through. Balsamic dressing.

A crispy salad, with dressing and a few crispy chips. Lasagna can be a soft sort of meal, so something crispy is a good contrast in texture. Crusty bread too maybe?

A tricolore salad? Mozarella, avocado and tomatoes. or just a lovely tomato salad with basil.

I find those pub menus quite horrendous - the ones that have lasagne with chips and garlic bread! Talk about a carb overload. The lasagne itself is all the carb anyone needs on that plate.

I like to serve a tomato salad, vine tomatoes with finely sliced red onions and drizzled with a good quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar. A bowl of crisp little gem lettuce to go with the tomatoes.

Probably unpopular as i guess the two together may be heavy, but for me its always caesar salad ?

Hi Lucca - hope that you had a lovely evening
What did you serve with your lasagne?
And what was for pud? smile

dragonfly46 Sat 19-Jun-21 10:55:44

That would be my choice Harrigran.

I had a quick look online and there are various versions for sausagemeat lasagne involving mushrooms, spinach, cherry tomatoes, tomato paste and passata. Perhaps use a recipe without fresh tomatoes and serve a tomato and onion salad?

Just seen harrgran's post and seen that she also suggests this.

This Lasagne looks delicious, thanks for posting recipe I am going to try. Plus some of your salad ideas look wonderful.

I only make fruity salads which I love and live on daily. Baby spinach leaves, Avocado, Orange, Edamame beans, Grapes, Olives with a good French dressing made with pink wine vinegar. I would serve humous and cheese with that on the side. Preferably grated Parmesan cheese. All makes a lovely meal.
You can put anything in your salads, fruit and veg goes so well together mixed and cut up in mouthful sizes in a bowl. Looks pretty and colourful too. If you really want bread then freshly bakes small baguettes are nice or rye or spelt bread rolls

I wouldn't serve anything with it, but serve fresh fruit of some description after it.

In this heat I would not contemplate anything containing sausagemeat, which seems an odd thing to put into lasagne.

A colourful red, green and yellow salad.

Why are you using sausage meat, not minced beef? We don't serve anything with lasagna, because I put a layer of cheese and a layer of ham between each pasta / bolognaise / beaten egg layer, and it's filling. No ricotta, though. You can have a deli platter before, and ice-cream and nuts for after. Try pouring some tinned milk on the top before you bake it, and you will see the difference.

I am with loveOc here and love it with crispy chips . It,s the contrast between crisp and the creamy sauce .

annsixty Sat 19-Jun-21 12:49:32

The OP uses sausage meat because that is what the recipe she uses states.

Chips! I can’t eat lasagne without them.

RosesAreRed21 Sat 19-Jun-21 12:56:43

A nice side salad and I’d put a basket of chips in the middle of the table for those that enjoy them with a lasagna like I do

JdotJ Sat 19-Jun-21 13:01:06

Spinach leaves tossed in with an avocado, drizzled with pesto sauce and toasted pine nuts.

It’s a different recipe! Mary berry’s express lasagne on bbcgoodfood.

I’m just as surprised that you would pour tinned milk on and add a layer ham.

The recipe uses sausagemeat. As I said in my original post.
Take it up with Mary Berry !

Hi. It’s this evening in fact. And I have planned a salad with avocado mange tout and croutons among other things.
I have made a lemon meringue ice cream and a summer fruit compote.

Have also bought a foccacia.
