What are your stories and anecdotes about the current shortage on some shelves?

I would imagine that Lemongrove was just being polite as the OP lives in Switzerland and is enquiring about shortages in our supermarkets.

It's the Ping effect.

Oh sorry I missed that Gransnet rule I didnt realise we had to post where we lived. DlSo does everyone do that. Are people living in other countries not allowed to ask questions. Perhaps people need to wrote a list of these rules so people know what is going on.

I missed that too. I live in Suffolk. Our coop has intermittent shortages, aldi less so. Big shortage of fish though.

Was this not the response you were hoping for OP?
Were you hoping for tales of woe, accounts of empty shelves ?

What’s the situation like in Switzerland?
Isn’t that more relevant to you as that’s where you live?

Why this obsession with Switzerland? Are you all at chez lemongrove and drinking too much?

Why do people keep wittering about Switzerland? Is it part of the subtle Toblerone infiltration branch of GN

It's not even subtle. Or funny. Or kind. But some find it witty.

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 16:36:52

Why the secrecy though? confused

I didn't come down the Severn in a bubble either.

JaneJudge Tue 10-Aug-21 16:38:57

I don't think bubbles last that long on the Severn. I was at Ironbridge once (as a child) when someone fell in confused luckily they were ok but I remember all the screaming, even now!

I would imagine it's none of her business and she's trying to goad her into admitting she's another poster with a new name. It's the latest in that kind of comment/question. (But what would I know? hmm)

Gaps in Sainsbury's offerings online in the Northwest. Non of their own milk for 3 weeks no prunes or Canadian bread flour. Big drop in the range of cheeses and some fruit and veg are not fit to eat especially bananas and peaches.

If they do, it says something about the quality of their definition of wit.

Aha! I think you've rumbled the shortage of Sauvignon Blanc.

TrendyNannie6 Tue 10-Aug-21 16:41:45

Yes Sainsbury’s lots of empty or near empty shelves yesterday bread kitchen rolls orange squash aisles. Tesco has very few kitchen rolls toilet rolls also

I’ve just come on here to see if there’s a thread about food shortages. I’ve had grandchildren staying, so between looking after them in the day time and doing my job in the evenings I am obviously out of touch with the news.

This morning I took my grandson to the nearest supermarket (Lidl) to buy some ingredients for things we were going to make later and I was totally surprised to be met with empty shelves on every aisle! ? I even took a photo to show my husband, but he already knew (he does most of the shopping).

Ironically there seemed to be plenty of fresh fruit and veg (which I grow on the allotment), but chronic shortages of lots of family staples - and the beer and wine shelves were almost emptied!!

Grandson’s gone out for an hour or two, so having caught up on my work I’m now going to see what other news I’ve missed.

I haven't found any shortages. I buy our cat pouches and have had no problems with supply.
The one thing that did take a few weeks for the supermarkets to restock was pork seasoning. ? Hardly a problem though

GillT57 Tue 10-Aug-21 17:00:19

Janejudge there is a really good cartoon of The Scream, it shows a longer picture, and a foot on a lego brick. grin

Sussex here. Big gaps in Co-op, Waitrose and Sainsbury's. Tesco fairly full up and didn't seem to be a problem. Iceland no problem. A lot of gaps among the fresh fruit and veg in the supermarkets but none in our local greengrocers. Apparently due to Brexit (lots of Eastern Europeans returned home), Covid and isolation, staff summer holidays, lack of lorry drivers and lack of trainers.

tippytipsy Tue 10-Aug-21 17:14:02

If there are shortages then I assume restaurants must be having the same problem. So far everything I have ordered on the menu has been brought to the table or do they get in special supplies?

Chewbacca Tue 10-Aug-21 17:19:33

I wondered about that too tippytipsy. I was out to dinner on both Friday and Saturday evening and there didn't appear to be anything "off " the menu and, when our meals arrived, they were plentiful. The shortages seem to be very localised.

welbeck Tue 10-Aug-21 17:53:57

i think catering suppliers for restaurants use different distribution centres than supermarkets.
it is a different kind of activity, and scale.

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 17:54:57

We're out to lunch tomorrow

Should I take a sandwich with me just in case?

It does appear to be patchy.

Yes, welbeck
We know someone who drove a lorry supplying restaurants and hotels with catering supplies; he was furloughed last year when nowhere was open.

JaneJudge Tue 10-Aug-21 18:49:09

I suppose as well as using different suppliers, people who provide catering (chefs etc) will just work with what they are supplied with. It's not like people shopping who need specific cat or dog food, squash etc Plus local pubs etc have good relations (unless chains) with local suppliers and supply chains.

JaneJudge Tue 10-Aug-21 18:49:40

I use ETC FAR TOO MUCH I apologise
