What are your stories and anecdotes about the current shortage on some shelves?

annodomini Tue 10-Aug-21 10:46:49

I haven't noted any shortages in our local Waitrose or the nearby Aldi. But then, my needs are modest!
I read somewhere that the Army are going to supply personnel to make up the deficit in delivery drivers!

Before the days of Sauvignon Blanc and even before Chardonnay (1960s) I remember buying a bottle of Barsac, thinking that was posh! As far as I remember, it was very sweet.

Was this not the response you were hoping for OP?
Were you hoping for tales of woe, accounts of empty shelves ?

What’s the situation like in Switzerland?
Isn’t that more relevant to you as that’s where you live?

We are fortunate to live within easy reach of a few excellent farm shops. We get locally produced cheese, eggs, meat, milk, salad and veg from local farm shops and bread (plus some naughty cakes and pies) from the small family-run bakery about a mile from our house. Rice, pasta, porridge oats, dry and canned goods, herbs and spices from Lidl (I’m not as posh as some Grans). There are a few lovely delis in the city centre that I visit occasionally. Not been able to do that much due to Covid. As someone else said, if something is out of stock we use something else smile

I hope so too, anna7

Blossoming we always shopped at Lidl on our way to Waitrose but unfortunately Lidl don't deliver and we've been having grocery deliveries for months.

We did manage to get there the other week though, the best nectarines and chocolate - and they had Sauvignon Blanc!

Yesterday monthly Aldi click and collect all good, only one sub.
instead of low plain fat crisps...
Pomme bears grin.

Our local food markets and farm shops are full of lovely fresh produce.

We have new fruit and veg shop in the village opened a couple of months ago, shelves all full.

Local butchers trading as normal.

Local Chemist does not seem to be experiencing any problems at the moment and have good supply of over the counter medications.

Home bargains etc all shelves full including toilet paper!

My only issue is all that the Clark shoe shops local to us are closed.
However last year, I purchased Clarke's own foot measure , so still able to measure grandchildren feet and order from Clark's outlet online. ?

Oh sorry I missed that Gransnet rule I didnt realise we had to post where we lived. DlSo does everyone do that. Are people living in other countries not allowed to ask questions. Perhaps people need to wrote a list of these rules so people know what is going on.

Blossoming Tue 10-Aug-21 11:15:46

Calistemon Mr. B. goes to Lidl and delivers the shopping back to me grin

If they did deliver what would the neighbours think if they saw a Lidl van outside your house?

Eviebeanz Tue 10-Aug-21 11:16:14

Our local co-op has a sign up apologising for any potential shortages, but didn't appear to be anything missing from shelves. Have noticed shortages in several stores and on line shop of water, but not something that's a big deal -husband says he misses bottled water so refilled empty bottle from tap.

Eviebeanz Tue 10-Aug-21 11:16:42

Oops I'm in Essex

Why do people keep wittering about Switzerland? Is it part of the subtle Toblerone infiltration branch of GN

I haven't been in our Asda since the beginning of lockdown as we have been having click and collect so can only say that there hasn't been one week that we have had a complete order delivered and most weeks have had to change our order to take account of the out of stock items.
My neighbours have said that they have most weeks had to go to more than one place to get what they need.
I have noticed how the prices have jumped up over the last week or so too.

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 11:23:43

Goodness me! What would the neighbours think

I've just seen an Asda van trying to turn round outside, negotiating its way around a Waitrose van and our builders' van!
We get all sorts round here grin

Ilovecheese Tue 10-Aug-21 11:26:47

Our local co-op has empty shelves with apology notices.
There were no crisps on the shelves which didn't matter to us but I suppose it is because they take up so much room in the lorries.
More of a nuisance is the lack of fruit and veg.

The local Marks and Spencer, on the other hand, has no shortages at all.

Chewbacca Tue 10-Aug-21 12:13:35

Absolutely chock a block full shelves in Aldi and Waitrose this morning but every Co OP store I've been in has empty shelves. No idea whats going on with them particularly.

JaneJudge Tue 10-Aug-21 12:21:39

I suppose if it is covid related, co-op have smaller staff teams so will suffer more if one or two are off

Floradora9 Tue 10-Aug-21 14:28:29

Zoejory

No gaps here at all.

My daughter's in Scotland and all the shelves are full.

In fact the only place I've seen gaps in supermarkets is in the Daily Mail.

It depends what part of Scotland you live in our local Co-Op , the main shop , had no milk at all on Sunday . To-day there were no fresh chickens .

Because the OP lives in Switzerland. Does that explain some comments.

I don't care where the OP lives. I expect she can read newspapers, watch TV and has contacts in the UK.

I most certainly live in the UK and, despite rarely going into a supermarket, I've noticed empty shelves and have had more items than usual unavailable in my recent online shops.

JaneJudge Tue 10-Aug-21 15:25:12

Kali2, do you live in Switzerland?

A straight question was asked so I gave a straight answer instead of pussy footing around.

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 15:50:13

It does matter where posters live because we were asked for stories and anecdotes which I presume means about our own area.

For example, someone (can't remember who, sorry) upthread mentioned about shortages in Wales and her relatives have to cross the border to shop.

I live in Wales and haven't noticed any shortages (apart from the Sauv Blanc but that may be because it was on a very good offer). So, if there are gaps and shortages, it seems to vary very much from place to place.

TerriBull Tue 10-Aug-21 15:53:18

There has been a distinct lack of porridge in Sainsburys for the past few weeks, but managed to get it in Waitrose, they had plenty. There also didn't seem to be any tinned coconut milk around for a while but it reappeared again last week, only to disappear againhmm Other than those shelves are fairly well stocked

No shortages here thanks, what’s it like in Switzerland?

What's Switzerland got to do with UK based supermarkets?
