So many plums!

A friend dropped over a bag of prune-plums, just the day after I purchased a few pounds of them at the grocery store. My friend's plums were very ripe, some were splitting. She said she may bring me more in a few days.

I ended up halving and pitting them, and laid them out on a baking sheet to freeze. DH will bag them up once frozen.

Do you find that they get a bit soggy after freezing? How do you use them? So far this month I have made a German plum cake and used them fresh with my yoghurt at lunch.

Any other suggestions? We don't really eat jam.

I'd never heard of prune plums before, had to look them up. How about spicing them up into a lovely fruity chutney for having with cold meats over the C period?

I think another name for them is Italian plums.

Puddings: crumbles, pies, sponges. Jam, chutney. Gently stew and squash slightly and serve as a compote with breakfast cereal.

I freeze plums whole and then we can do Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor etc when we eat them.

Another suggestion is chinese style plum sauce which can be used with duck etc. Keeps well if put in jars with a good seal when hot. Here's one recipe but easy to find others online.
If you don't want to make immediately, freeze plums and use later.

I make jars of plum jam. Unfortunately DDs plum tree was diseased this year, so no plums..
Every year I pass a neighbour's plum tree, where they are left to rot. They fall over the pavement and onto the road. I'm not bold enough to knock his door and offer to make crumble or Eve's pudding in return for some.

Thanks for all the ideas. looking up the orange and plum cake. I did end up halving them and freezing them.

Monica, I have no idea what you mean by Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor...please explain.

Marydoll, I would ask if I could pick some, they obviously haven't bothered with them. The worst outcome would be a 'no' from them, but I'm sure they would love for the plums to be used instead of going to waste.

Yes lots of plums here preserved them 3 weeks ago, same with Greengages, Bramleys last week, Pears this week. We have tried to keep them to ripen but losses have been too high in the past, so they all go in freezer now, so lots of puddings for the winter.
Must pick some blackberries soon.

When I get given plumbs (sadly not for ages) I make Mulled wine Jam. A recipe I found in a WI book.
You cook as normal Jam bit add mixed spices and a bottle of Red.
Absolutely delicious, I have given some jars away to friends to have at Christmas.

"Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor,
Rich man, poor man, beggarman, thief"

CanadianGran - it's a children's rhyme - the stones are lined up and counted while saying the rhyme - whatever word you stop on is what you're going to be! Probably not politically correct these days.

I make plum dumpling - also a german recipe - and the italian plums are just what we use (sugar plums)
www.esterkocht.com/german-plum-dumplings-zwetschgenknodel/
We don't use sour cream.
Our topping of choice is melted butter with sugar mixed with sugar/cinnamon mix
Enjoy
