Remember when you bought a loaf of Mothers Pride , buttered (or marged) it and made ham or cheese or fish paste or (posh this) egg mayonnaise sandwiches?
Now a single sandwich costs more than the MP, butter and the fillings.
But some are really worth it.
Favourites?
Bacon, Brie and cranberries or Coronation Chicken for me.
Humble cheese and pickle too as long as the cheese is sliced not grated which always tastes of sick to me.

Egg and cress every time for me. Sometimes with mayonnaise but mostly just plain. πŸ˜‹

Ooh, and banana sandwich if I fancy something sweet.

My favourites are M & S Cheese and celery on multigrain bread, or home made tomato sarnies on brown bread. Heavenly!!

At a recent function which included afternoon tea I had a delicious sandwich. Nothing I hadn't had before but it was the preparation of the ingredients that made the filling more tasty.
Smoked salmon trimmings chopped small and mixed thoroughly with Salmon flavour Phillidephia Cheese. So much more interesting than smoked salmon with cream cheese in my opinion.

My children loved peanut butter but l didn't like the smell so avoided it. I have no idea why, but l tried it in my sixties. I don't dare buy another jar, addicted.

The smell is a bit earthy, but the taste makes up for it. smile

I like a plain, unadulterated hard boiled egg sandwich. Not egg mayonnaise.

I love grated cheese mixed with horse radish sauce, really tasty and some rocket on.

MissAdventure Sun 14-Jul-24 11:42:59

I like cheese and grainy mustard.

A chip butty, a bacon and egg butty or a plain cucumber sandwich with just a touch of salt.

This sometime Glasgow lassie can still fall for a bacon sandwich!

I have just had one in Glasgow. It was delicious.

BLT with mayo
Egg and beetroot
chicken and cranberry
Chip butty with the spread dripping as you eat it

Have read through the whole thread of many delicious ideas but one that was NOT mentioned...... maybe it doesn't count as a sandwich
Two things my grandfather made for us post war

The dripping ( including jelly) from a pork joint that had not had all the fat bred out of it...on toast and well salted...... bliss

If we needed a 'pudding' when staying with him that would be ground cinnamon with sugar again on hot buttered toast

Tuna with finely chopped celery and onion, mixed with mayo and served with salad(either in it or beside it)

missdeke Sun 14-Jul-24 13:58:33

Cheddar Cheese (not too strong) and jam, preferably blackberry or blackcurrant on white bread, not thick sliced.

grannybuy Sun 14-Jul-24 14:57:06

Chicken and avocado, and prawn mayonnaise, though not too much mayo. I don’t like sweetcorn in a sandwich filling.

grannybuy Sun 14-Jul-24 15:01:25

Banana and Mars bar done on a campfire or barbecue, or even under the grill.

MaggsMcG Sun 14-Jul-24 16:27:36

Laughing Cow or Dairylea cheese with sliced gherkins, or Heinz sandwich spread

Boolya Sun 14-Jul-24 18:02:27

Coronation Chicken or ham & coleslaw,
Pear & blue cheese. ….

kittylester Sun 14-Jul-24 18:14:42

Just remembered another- philly, smoked salmon and sun dried tomatoes.

When I used to make my own lovely wholemeal bread , my favourite treat was lovely prawns with a very little tartar sauce and some side salad with lots of lemon on it.
Another one was same bread but with roast beef and really bite back horseradish. Lovely. Feeling hungry already

Cabbie21 Sun 14-Jul-24 19:55:16

Just eaten a tuna and cucumber sandwich. No mayo as I can’t open the jar.

Nonnadiana Sun 14-Jul-24 20:16:51

From childhood sliced banana on buttered white bread. Also ciabatta roll with Parma ham, rocket and tomato

Nannan2 Sun 14-Jul-24 20:25:49

All my family love my home-made 'egg mayo' sarnies- but i dont use mayo, i use salad cream. It makes a huge difference to the taste, its not too creamy. My son has made his own sandwich invention recently- lasagne in bread- he calls it a 'lasagnwich'.I dont think it will catch on, but you never know.πŸ€”πŸ˜†
