Reminiscing about childhood sweets

Chatting to my sister she remarked that when buying some sweets for her GChildren, she noticed that an old favourite of ours, a Curly Wurly seems to have shrunk in length. I laughed and said it was likely because we had actually grown taller! It reminded me of my absolute favourites from childhood, Spangles! This was closely followed by sherbet pips. If I spent my hard earned pocket money on these I could make them last forever by sucking them one at a time. Any other grans (or grandads) have any old favourites?

Spanish Gold. It came in waxy paper red, designed to look like tobacco wrap.
It was shredded coconut, covered in not sure what but it was absolutely divine!

Pear drops but they made my mouth sore if I ate too many.
Liquorice Pontefract cakes, do they still make them?
Five Boys chocolate bars.

Black bullets ...my grandad's favourite. Thornton's toffee a 6d bar of Cadbury's whole nut was a real treat. Pine apple chunks.

I don't think Gobstoppers live up to their name any more.

We always had spangles on long car journeys.
Still very partial to liquorice allsorts. Used to love dolly mixtures until I realised they always gave me a cold 🤦🏼‍♀️

Cadbury’s do a very thin bar of caramel chocolate which is very similar.

A tiny shop near us sold coconut squares which were marshmallow inside with chocolate and coconut on the outside. Probably about 2” square.

Also chocolate bananas. Lovely.

You can get Caramac from Poundland and from Iceland.

When we visited my Grandmother in Southampton my cousin would take me to a shop that made their own sweets, the chocolate fudge was delicious.

Duncan’s walnut whips. Sherbet lemons, gobstoppers that change colours and you had to keep getting them out of your mouth to check. Must have been sticky but I don’t think kids notice that!

Yorkshire mixture/winter mixture/dolly mixture
cough candy
humbugs
aniseed balls
sherbet lemons
Cola cubes
Sherbet with lollipops
Gobstoppers so big they could have killed us kids!
My teeth are a disgrace thanks to these childhood favourites.

Coconut mushrooms, sherbet lemons ,caramac and fruit salads . My husband loved herbals and Cadbury chocolate eclairs but did lose a filling once to one. He always had sweets in the car . The children used to take delight in finding daddies secret hoard. But they only had chocolate as a treat and we didn't buy them sweets. Once teenagers and had pocket money they did buy them occasionally. But never have fillings . Where I have and my husband had a mouth full.

Remember going into sweet shops and the toffee was broken up in front of you using a toffee hammer. Old sweet shops always had a lovely smell and those scales that only weight up to 1lb.

My favourites were sweet peanuts.
I'd suck them for as long as possible then bite hard to break the covering to get to the delicious salty peanut centre. 🙄
No wonder my teeth full of fillings!!!

Black Jacks and fruit salad chews. Five boys bars. Flying saucers. I always wanted a Jubilee Bag but mum said they were poor value for money. When I did eventually get one it was rather disappointing. I loved candy mice but they may have been seasonal (Christmas or Easter).

Five Boys

Paynes poppets

and when we borrowed my Mum's brother's car to drive to Cornwall, those tins of boiled sweets that were considered a real treat. We never ever had them at any other time.

And I'm old enough to remember Cadbury's 1d bars which my Nan would buy me when we went to the United Dairies corner shop and served by a lady called Marj. (2d bar on special occasions grin)

I’d still buy some flying saucers, if I ever saw any. Ditto a sherbet fountain.

I’ve seen Pontefract Cakes somewhere not long ago - and bought some, I still love liquorice!

ferry23, I remember the 1d bars of Cadbury’s, too.

I loved Toffee Cups, the finger one. It was never the same, after they changed the name.

Another favourite was Golden Mint Spangles.

Kate1949 Sat 05-Oct-24 10:03:20

Penny Arrow toffee bars
Gob stoppers
Penny chews
Black jacks
Sweet cigarettes
Liquorice root - yuk
Lucky Numbers chocolates if I had enough money. I can still remember the words to the advert.

Opposite my primary school there was a newsagents which had a special drawer containing inexpensive sweets for children - presumably you had to ask to see this drawer! My favourites were the tiny bars of Dairy Milk (wrapped in foil) and tubes of sherbet with a stick of liquorice in.

Shrimps! Loved them! I bought some recently, but they’re half the size, seemed more sugary and not as much flavour. Apart from that, I enjoyed them 😆
