DH is the only one in our household that eats cucumber. You used to be able to buy half a cucumber but I don’t see any now and I hate waste. Does anyone know who still sells them or what I can do with half a cucumber other than put it in the food waste?

Lidl and Aldi have sold the half cues for ages.
I like them with a dip, and some baby sweetcorn and sugarsnap peas.

Waitrose sell a small cucumber

A trick back in the days post war, before we even owned a fridge, my gran would cut what she needed, ensuring stem but was at the bottom and then stand it in a jar of water and into the window sill. The cucumber absorbs water through the spout stem. Prolongs life. Try it. Any ojd jam jar will do.

I now buy baby cucumbers as we use one at a time and the rest keep in the fridge.

Waitrose sell midi cucumbers.

Came here to say the same. They are about the size of a half cucumber and seem to have more flavour than the regular ones. I can't tell you the price though but I'm sure it's not exorbitant.

Midi cucumber was 65p in Waitrose today.

You can actually cook a cucumber - I tried this recipe of Nadya's and it was surprisingly delicious!

I use leftover cucumber (and other vegetables) when making soup! You don't really taste it but it's a way of not wasting! We often have "fridge-soup : it may have half a paprika, the 2 last springonions, some chinese cabbage, and yes a piece of cucumber.

M&S always sell half cucumbers, and if you wrap it in foil, it will last 5 days or more. Don’t use clingfilm, as I find it makes food sweat!

I live on my own. I just eat a whole cucumber! It's only water ! And it lasts a few days in the fridge. What's the problem?

Thank you all for your advice and suggestions which I will have a go at . Nadiya’s recipe using cucumber sounds interesting. Clearly I haven’t looked around enough for half cucumbers.

Have you tried the small packets of baby cucumbers that I know Morrisons sell and maybe other supermarkets.
I will admit I enjoy the cucumbers that I grow during the summer months

Greenfinch Wed 13-Nov-24 17:22:39

I haven’t tried the baby cucumbers yet but I would imagine they have a lot of skin and not much inside.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Nov-24 18:33:24

That's what I've found with them.

They're much more crispy and crunchy.

Coolgran65 Wed 13-Nov-24 18:41:18

Where can I buy the green bags to keep the veg fresh. Peppers are ok. But my cucumber turns to jelly so no more in the crisper and thanks everyone for the tips.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Nov-24 18:44:47

I ordered some from amazon while reading this thread.
They do the Lakeland ones, but I went for cheaper, first, to see if they work.

The last time I bought a whole cucumber was when my DD was staying and I couldn't get a half one. After she left I went to stay with DS and family and gave the remaining half of it to them as it was still OK and I knew I wouldn't use it.

Asda sell half cucumbers.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Nov-24 20:41:58

I'd rather buy a whole one and lose three quarters of it, than half, for around twenty pence less.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Nov-24 20:42:51

A quarter! WheRe that three came from I don't know.

Our local indoor market has a fantastic fruit and veg stall where I live and you can buy half a cucumber, turnip or swede, round cabbage. It is a blessing to anyone living on their own as they split anything, one banana, apple, orange, pear, a small bunch of grapes about 12, and anything you ask within reason. They had packs of mushrooms and I commented there was too many for me and I was asked how many I needed and I said just a couple to have with my bacon and that’s what I got. Everything is so fresh, the stall looks lovely and clean and they are always busy and very pleasant. So much nicer than supermarkets and they make sure you are safe with your purse away before you leave the stall.

I’ve never been a fan of cucumber but Dh liked it in a salad so a half was just enough. I rarely buy it these days. However, I remember shopping for vegetables in our local market when stationed in the Netherlands and the stall holders looked at you strangely if you wanted to buy only one cucumber - they were priced in threes and that was how the Dutch bought them. Tomatoes were prepackaged in kilos. And price of veg was considerably cheaper than UK due to the fuel subsidies growers got from their government.
