Fish & Chips: £12 - £15!

Once the cheap'n'filling affordable food of the working class, the price has escalated out of all proportion.

And however much fish and chip shop owners wring their hands and claim it's beyond their control I'm afraid it looks like they'll have to go the way of the pubs - right out of business.

Yes in some chippies Mt61 you’ll get two fish for a single! Single in a Scotland really means no chips.

The Blue lagoon is still going strong in Glasgow and in Stirling. Not sure if they’re perhaps a franchise though.

Two portions of "senior" fish and chips at our local chippy are £14. They are enough portion wise.

But fish and chips now in some pubs near us are £19.95 per person.

Pub meals now are for high days and holidays. Or if they are running a special offer.

I now buy cod fillet and dust in flour, egg and proper breadcrumbs - delicious served with air fryer chips. Don't want to get the chip pan back out too messy.

Only bought as a treat now and then as so expensive, last time was £12 each for cod and chips.

My local fish and chip shop closed down. He charged around £13 for the fish, and chips were extra. I went elsewhere (once) as he was charging £18, and it was not particularly good.

I always try to either go shortly after opening otherwise I’m prepared to wait while they fry a fresh piece of Cod or Haddock.
I scoffed a large juicy flaky cod in crisp bubbly batter, “just enough” chips and a pot of mushy peas. all to myself!
… I didn’t realise how hungry I was😋
Partner said it was about £10.
Worth every penny imo. And beautifully wrapped with no polystyrene!

You'd think it would be cheaper in Devon, 🌊 , but our prices are on a par with Shinamae's.
£11.75 for haddock and chips.

I am not sure as we don’t usually have fish and chips to take away but in a south coastal cafe last week they were £17 each. So £34 for two.

Nearly died when I opened my fish supper, two massive fish 🤣 my husband the same. We did end up sharing it with a rather hungry, drunk football supporter 😊

Grannies unite,,I think you must go to the same chippie as me

Our local chippie is £10 for a regular cod and 2.50 for regular chips . It's a expensive treat now , we're in South Gloucestershire, Bristol

Last week while Dh was in hospital I thought I’d treat myself to fish n chips. I had plaice, chips and a cods roe. £16. Omg it was huge. Massive plaice, too many chips and a large cod’s roe. It would have been plenty for the two of us. I shared it with the dog.
Expensive for one but a good deal for two.

The best fish and chips ever can be bought in Suffolk. Aldeburgh and Dunwich.
Aldeburgh is around £10
Dunwich £14

Both delicious !

We always have enough chips left over to serve with another meal. I freeze then and then cook them in the oven - just like all the best restaurants double, sometimes, even triple cooked chips - delicious.

My big grump with my local chippy is that we quite often choose pie and chips and, presumably to keep costs down our chippy is has moved from stocking Pukka pies, that are excellent to buying Peters pies which are all hard pastry and brown stuff and are horrible.

I came across an old paper clipping on Facebook a couple of days ago for the prices of fish and chips at a local chippy.
It used to be 21p for fish & chips . Now it's £18.95 shock

I haven't been to the chippy for many years, I prefer to make my own .

Shinamae

Can’t remember the last time I had it, but here’s our local price list in one of our chip shops in North Devon

That menu sounds really nice!

Standard cod and chips in my local in Bristol is just under £12.

Does anyone remember the way prices exploded in the 70s when there was the potato shortage. There was all the fish you could eat but chips were astronomical. Fish and Chips is a rare treat for us now. I tend to eat it more often in a restaurant where at least I'm getting a plate and cutlery, and someone else is washing up, which makes the price seem worth it.

Went out yesterday to local upmarket fish and chip restaurant. Haddock and chips£17 mushy peas extra £2.45. The chippy underneath ( sane company) was charging £11 for fish and chips.

Norah Sun 13-Apr-25 20:26:23

Agree OP.

£12 - £15 is more than I'd want to pay for fish and potatoes.

As a veggie I eat battered halloumi with chips when eating out for a treat. Cheaper than fish.

woodenspoon Sun 13-Apr-25 20:59:03

One of our local shops does pensioners special of cod, chips, dessert, tea or coffee for £9.99. It’s very good.

CanadianGran Sun 13-Apr-25 21:18:00

I just had a cod and chips when I went to lunch with a friend on Thursday. Equivalent to 10.50 GBP. Just one piece of fish, but it was quite large. Served with a small side of coleslaw, and a wedge of lemon, which is the norm here.

This was the first time I saw vinegar in a spray bottle! Regular and malt vinegar in a small spray, which I quite liked!

We have them about once a month - absolutely delicious from our local chippy (,Gloucester). £11 for a huge portion so we share one between us

An occasional meal for us if we've been busy on a Friday.

Two cod, one chips, one mushy peas was £18 last time.

As a student my first memory of Fish and Chips was ordering
“fish and 6” which was Cod at 1/- and 6d chips that would be around 1965, in new money that’s 7 1/2 pence. I was earning £5 a week then it seemed cheap at the time.

If a student could earn £10 an hour and Fish and Chips was £11 it’s twice as expensive now

Our chippy serves large portions so we buy a large fish, a portion of chips and a large pot of mushy peas between the two of us. £6 for fish, £2.70 chips, £1.40 peas, so just over
