Once the cheap'n'filling affordable food of the working class, the price has escalated out of all proportion.

And however much fish and chip shop owners wring their hands and claim it's beyond their control I'm afraid it looks like they'll have to go the way of the pubs - right out of business.

As folk who've read through the comments will have realised, there are huge regional differences in F&C pricing, it's not just the massively higher prices of the ingredients that are at fault! [Thinks rents and business rates . . .]

The OP's phrase "And however much fish and chip shop owners wring their hands" is, sadly, delusional, why would those shop owners make such drastic increases and instantly reduce their customer base if they didn't have to? Have you tried running a business? No, thought not.

Oh, and did someone say making those meals yourself (or from a s'market) would be cheaper and healthier? Well, yes, but the SAME APPLIES to Indian & Chinese (s'market versions are fine these days) and most certainly to Pizza, ridiculously expensive from a takeaway, given that the box costs more than the ingredients -- and from some well-known chains, tastes slightly better!

Yet people are more than happy to pay £20 for a pizza that cost on average £2.50 to make. Unbelievable.

Hi
Everything has gone up from the cooking fat,the fuel ,the wages, the rent You name it 😢

Yes, I do. 6 penn'orth was the norm for many years. Fish and chips were 1/3d. I think the price of chips only rose during the potato shortage in the 70s, and never came back down.

Sorry Daisy, looks like I've quoted the wrong post.

In the Madrid Capital, since 1860 there is a centinnel bar called LABRIA which is well known for its Fresh battered Cod Fish which is simply divinely delicious.

With a glass of wine or a beer it is approx. 14 € ..

Then there is The James Joyce Pub (Irish owned) which has Fish and chips on their lunch carte as a main entree.

I sometimes prepared battered fish, British style at home.

I recall it to be absolutely scrumputous ..

We're lucky here that fish and chips is only £6.50, it's always well cooked and they're both very tasty, sadly the shop is up for sale, but a lot of shop owners are becoming incredibly greedy, there's no way I'd pay more than £7.50 for one portion without anything else like peas etc.!

We have a great chippy downstairs opposite Sainsbury’s. Generous portions so we share. £9 for fish with small chips. If I come home and get in one of the lifts and can smell someone’s been for them, I always fancy some!

Same if I ever smell fried onions, mmn! 😁

My late aunt worked in a cafe some years ago in a busy area of Falkirk. When it went quiet her boss would ask her to fry up some onions. The smell always brought in a steady stream of customers. 😉

last night small haddock and chips for 4 plus one portion of mushy peas, cost £46 at our local chippy. However we have enough chips left to go with our steak pie this evening.

Ours costs $24 for a large piece of flake and chips, about £11.50 so similar. Enough chips for 2 . I think our wages are a bit higher, though. Everything is expensive now except the dreaded maccas which is probably the cheapest.
