Welcome to the Fourth Thread, Questioners and Answerers!

Are you feeling Autumnal?

Mollygo Sat 25-Sept-21 23:17:54

Hollysteers
Black banana!

Same question as I just asked.

Ali08 Sun 26-Sept-21 00:50:41

Eww, I hope they have dock leaves? ? Or something to clean themselves with - I cannot go without wiping so often have something in my bag!!

Do you think Gransnetter 'Tilly Trotter' could be from Northumberland, or nearby?
I ask because 'Tilly Trotter' is a character from a Catherine Cookson book, and she wrote about Northumberland in the 1800s to early 1900s.
She was a good writer!

TillyTrotter Sun 26-Sept-21 17:25:14

Haha no she’s not, she just enjoyed reading Catherine Cookson books ?

Which characters from books have stuck with you? Perhaps you were inspired by them, or they may have been dastardly?

FannyCornforth Sun 26-Sept-21 17:42:44

Tilly my favourite teacher, who I’ve already mentioned on here, is called Ruth Stott (I live in hope that she is on here).
As a girl she grew up in Hastings, where CC had a house with a large, impressive swimming pool. Catherine would let all of the local children swim in her pool.

Sorry, I haven’t answered your question!
My thread, my roolz smile

BBbevan Sun 26-Sept-21 18:32:52

I’ ll answer.
Jane Eyre. Loving, generous , honest and brave.

Which male character in fiction do you like ?

biglouis Sun 26-Sept-21 21:53:46

Paul Atreides from Dune.

Who was the most horible boss you ever worked with?

Mine was "Mr Middleton" a whinger and a misery. When I told him my grandmother had died he asked "How many grandmothers is this you've buried?" I made a formal complaint about it and a bigger boss gave him a right telling off for his "callous and unprofessional attitude" to a colleague. The big boss gave me 3 days paid leave in compensation so I wouldnt take it any further.

An old female theatre director unable to forget her past “glories”.

Which film could you watch over and over again?
(I can’t rewatch films myself, but possibly Wim Wenders “Wings of Desire”.

DanniRae Mon 27-Sept-21 08:22:47

Just watched "About a Boy" with Hugh Grant for the umpteenth time and enjoyed it as much as the first time. I also love "Grease" - "Sense and Sensibility" - "A Town Like Alice" - and many, many more. I can reread books too and enjoy them all over again.

Who is your favourite male actor? Hugh Grant is pretty high up on the list for me.

FannyCornforth Mon 27-Sept-21 08:35:55

Hugh is definitely improving with age.
I know that he’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I think Steve Coogan is really talented.
And Gary Oldman.
I think Sacha Baron Cohen is destined for greater things; he was mesmerising in Les Mis.
Old school I love Alec Guinness.
I could waffle on about this for ages!

Favourite female actor?

TillyTrotter Mon 27-Sept-21 08:58:59

Dame Judy Dench. She has had a brilliant career - I particularly liked her in “Philomena”.

Which is your favourite Christmas film (oops, said the C word).

biglouis Mon 27-Sept-21 15:03:38

I absolutely HATE christmas films and songs. Never watch them. Sorry!

What was the worst holiday you ever had?

Mine was in Paris when a "friend of a friend" (not invited by me) lost her passport and whinged because I wouldnt run around helping her because I was the only one who spoke fluent French. Guess what - they speak English at the British Embassy which is where you go for a replacement passport.

hollysteers Mon 27-Sept-21 15:08:12

Benidorm, I didn’t know what I was letting myself in for.
(Partying pals)

Is there a book you feel you should read, but haven’t got round to it?
(I feel I should read more Shakespeare)

AGAA4 Mon 27-Sept-21 15:25:15

I feel I should read more factual history books as I am interested in many eras. I tend to read when I am tired so may not take much in.

If you could fix something that's wrong in the world what would it be?

lovebeigecardigans1955 Mon 27-Sept-21 16:27:03

Where to start? Cruelty and ignorance are two things I'd like to banish.

How would others answer the same question?

AGAA4 Mon 27-Sept-21 16:34:37

I have started a thread with this question as I thought it would be interesting to see what we feel is mostly wrong in the world.

.

FannyCornforth Tue 28-Sept-21 05:32:11

Oh, AGA, so much.
Probably fewer people, the population being out of control is to blame for so much.
Fewer men in particular.
Women running the show, in all areas. Proper democracy and fairness. The distribution of wealth. A socialist, feminist utopia! Vote for Fanny! smile

FannyCornforth Tue 28-Sept-21 05:33:46

Ooh, got carried away there, forgot my question blush

Favourite cake?
Bought and homemade cupcake

AGAA4 Tue 28-Sept-21 07:34:25

I love your policies Fanny. I would certainly vote for you.

My favourite cake is lemon drizzle.

Do you have any unusual pets or pets with unusual personalities?

biglouis Tue 28-Sept-21 12:37:13

I dont have any pets now but I once had a tortoise shich bit my toes when I wore sandals!

How often do you send for a takeaway meal?

I have one a month - usually Chinese or Indian. Lots of ethnic restaurants near me.

BBbevan Tue 28-Sept-21 12:43:31

Very rarely, although we did have an extremely garlic laden Indian take away at mt DDs last weekend.

If things are going wrong, or even right, do you say a prayer. ?And if so to whom?

FannyCornforth Tue 28-Sept-21 12:59:35

Yes I do. I say (in my head) ‘Dear God and Mommy…’

My late mother seems a good source of spiritual support and mystical intervention as any!

How about you? Do you have a good spiritual life?
I admit that I don’t,
I wish that I had the comfort of a faith.
I started a thread about it earlier this year

hollysteers Tue 28-Sept-21 21:24:15

I try to read spiritual/religious books regularly, anything from Thomas a Kempis to books on Buddhism. My heroine is Sister Wendy. My spiritual life is very spasmodic, but I like to go to church, again spasmodically as I believe in a mystery of some sort.

Do you find it easy to disguise the fact that you really dislike someone?

Ali08 Wed 29-Sept-21 07:14:42

Erm....NO!!
I have tried, and not succeeded, oh except my daughters last bf thought he had won me over. He hadn't & when she told him it was over, I almost danced for joy (if I could've gotten up from my chair I would have)!

If you have a garden, or could use part of someone's, would you grow your own veg?

FannyCornforth Wed 29-Sept-21 07:29:24

Growing vegetables is one of the many, many things that I am in the process of ‘getting around to’

Sunday roast: tell me exactly how you like to do it, please, what veg etc
(I might do a thread on this, on a Sunday, of course roastchicken)

biglouis Wed 29-Sept-21 12:23:14

Sorry - I dont usually bother with a sunday roast. Cooking for one is a non starter. I just throw pre-prepared stuff in the microwave.

Were you ever a prefect or head girl/boy in school?

In spite of being very academic and always participating in house competitions and events I was never chosen. It was the more "sporty" and popular girls.
