Hello! ?

By my reckoning, this thread will see us through until we are near to C********!

SachaMac’s question was ‘if you could travel back to any time or place for one day, where / when would it be’?

I’m still mulling it over…

nanna8 Tue 23-Aug-22 10:08:43

No,there’s not many pubs round here.

Do you ever play old vinyl records? During our ridiculously harsh lockdowns here I revived some of ours and had fun playing them. They do sound different, I hadn’t realised.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 23-Aug-22 12:12:27

Yes, I've around 60 vinyl LPs and I listen to them most weekend mornings. One of my favourites is Fly Like An Eagle by Steve Miller Band. I've also got most of the Eagles records. I think the mid-seventies was a great era for music.

Are there any artistes of whom you have many records?

biglouis Tue 23-Aug-22 13:03:58

I no longer own any records!

I used to like Tamala Mowtown when I was younger and Roy Orbison.

Do you ever buy things in charity/secondhand/junk shops?

I used to love poking around them when I was more mobile and still occasionally do it with a friend.

SachaMac Tue 23-Aug-22 20:26:37

Yes I love browsing in charity & secondhand shops, especially for books & games for the GC. You can pick up some great bargains, I brought two brand new sealed jigsaws the other day for £2 each.

Do you still have/use a DVD player?

hollysteers Wed 24-Aug-22 00:01:51

I have a DVD player and my son and others have given me DVDs, but I don’t use it at all. There is enough going on with Netflix etc.

What is the one thing you got into trouble for at school?

henetha Wed 24-Aug-22 10:36:28

Two things that I can remember..
At primary school, - eating a toffee in class.
At grammar school, - hissing at the French teacher.

Can you remember your school uniform? Did you like it?
Did your parents struggle to afford it, like many parent these days?

Mollygo Wed 24-Aug-22 11:44:22

Winter uniform was OK, but OMG in summer, those gathered skirts onto a shirt top! Nightmare to get into and out if, and only ever looked good on the slim girls.
Yes my parents struggled to afford anything regulation- blazers, skirts or trousers for DB PE kit, regulation gaberdines and the school jumpers.
The PE kit when I was at Uni was also regulation.

Do you have a favourite poet or poem apart from those you learnt at school? I love some of John Betjeman’s poems.

biglouis Wed 24-Aug-22 16:46:24

I am a sucker for Christina Rosetti. I also like some of the WW! soldier poets like Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen.

Did you ever sneakily wear makeup at school when there was dance or disco?

I usually put on a bit of lipstick and then rubbed it off so that it just coloured my lips. I was very pale and sallow.

AGAA4 Wed 24-Aug-22 16:56:10

I remember trying to sneak out wearing mascara, eyeshadow and lipstick. My dad saw me and ordered me back upstairs to wash it off.

Do you wear jewellery and what is your favourite piece?

MrsKen33 Wed 24-Aug-22 18:45:33

Not much jewellery but I wear silver earrings and I have a lovely plain silver bracelet which is very special.

How did you dress in your teens As they say these days, what was your tribe. I was a beatnik.

biglouis Thu 25-Aug-22 00:21:47

I was never really in a "tribe" although I can remember mods and rockers. I am tall so I used to wear pencil slim skirts with a kick pleat and very high stiletto heels. I always wore my hair up in glamerous styles. Yes , I wore a beehive! And black eyeliner.

Have you ever grown your hair long?

Mine is still waist length and I keep debating whether to cut it very short as it would be far less trouble.

HowVeryDareYou Thu 25-Aug-22 08:20:16

I had long (ish) hair, past my shoulders, about 20 years ago. It's short now, very curly and unmanageable at times.

Have you ever been on a motorbike?

DanniRae Thu 25-Aug-22 08:32:38

No but I have been on a scooter - in the 60s - and, as a child, in the sidecar of my uncles motor bike!! grin

Does you dog hate thunder storms? Mine barks like crazy!

hollysteers Thu 25-Aug-22 08:36:26

No dog, but my cat runs about a bit. I feel for her.

What do you think has been the worst invention?
(Smartphones and the atom bomb)

AGAA4 Thu 25-Aug-22 11:38:26

Plastic. We all raved about it but not now.

What vegetable do you eat mostly? I eat broccoli regularly.

Mollygo Thu 25-Aug-22 11:43:57

Flat green beans. We grow them, they’re quick to cook and can be used in stir-fry. Most importantly the DC like them! I like Broccoli too.

Do you ever see broad beans in pods in shops near you?

FannyCornforth Thu 25-Aug-22 12:05:18

No. My neighbour who has an allotment gave me some of his last year, and they were as tough as old boots (sorry, John!) Of course, I said that they were delicious ?

I feel like a should start a cheerful thread. Any ideas? As many as possible please!

biglouis Thu 25-Aug-22 13:20:35

Bridgeit Thu 25-Aug-22 15:16:07

Perhaps we need a cheerful Fred?

hollysteers Thu 25-Aug-22 23:03:58

Is this the end of the question thread Fanny?
I hope not ?

henetha Thu 25-Aug-22 23:36:38

Shall I answer AAGA4's question, what I wanted but never got?
During my childhood and teens I was always fascinated by the Salvation army, mainly because I loved the tambourines. I asked mum endlessly for one but never got one.

So how about 'funny things that have happened to me', to keep the thread going...ok?

hollysteers Thu 25-Aug-22 23:56:29

In the days of suspender belts, mine snapped waiting to get off the bus and my stockings and belt landed round my ankles.

Turn to the book nearest to you, turn to page 118, line 4.
What does it say?

biglouis Fri 26-Aug-22 00:30:32

"Thermoplastic hinged bangles with rhinestones" (its a reference book on vintage jewellery.

If you couls go back to any decade in your life which would it be?

I would go back to the early 1950s when I was a kid playing in the street and completely carefree.

MrsKen33 Fri 26-Aug-22 00:53:58

1960s when I was at art school.

What is your favourite clothes label? Mine ,sadly is Toast, but it is so expensive.
