What is your front garden like?

When we had our back garden landscaped a few years ago we also had the front garden covered in 'pink' granite chips. This was because the garden is very wide (50' ish) not very deep (10' ish), faces north and the grass was awful, being in shade all day. We kept the perennials and shrubs that grew around the edges but they are taking more and more effort to keep looking nice.

Our drive comes up the side of the garden which is surrounded on 3 sides by a low granite wall and by the house, also granite!

We are tempted to get rid of all the plants, add more granite chips (over permeable membrane) and just put a few big pots on the gravel.

CArs don't have to be given a solid block of concrete, thopugh, do they? There could be a semi permeable membrane topped with gravel.stone chips with paving stones where the wheels go.

We have an old stone farmhouse and the garden goes across the front and round one side. The 'front' bit is, frankly, a bit of a mess because I'm no good at garden planning and too softhearted to pull up plants which are thriving. Replacing a tiny, mossy lawn with gravel was very successful though, apart from the fact that it's a brilliant medium for seeds and the plants in the border have spread themselves very freely. On the other hand, it allows me to grow things like rosemary which don't thrive in my clay soil.

in reply to one post, i've got quite a few heuchera plants, a torbay palm and also other palms. three bamboos - gold, green and black - and two yucca plants. also a couple of phormiums. in the area by the house [which gets no sun] i've bought evergreen ferns. there are a couple of rodgersia plants, a few lady's mantles, pulmonarias and bergenias. oh, and a bamboo-like plant which has a lovely red colour in the winter [sorry can't remember the name].
i chose all the plants but, as i'm disabled, i can't do any planting these days. so the guy who "built" the garden also did the planting.
he was a fantastic worker - he also built my back garden which i designed to look like a courtyard ............... climbers on all four walls, pond in the middle, patio and gravel - not a blade of grass in sight! i grow fruit and veg in pots as the beds in the garden are full of shrubs.
happy gardening everyone.

Hi lupa

Is your heuchera called "blackberry jam"?
Also, what's the palm called?

Thanks for sharing your garden. grin
