Growing Roses

Does anyone here know mush about growing roses. I have not ventured into this before. I want a couple of roses which will grow into a self supporting bush at least about 4ft high.
I look at all the sites and there are bush and shrub roses but I can find no clear defintion of the difference between these two terms.

I have recently planted a "rather vigorous" Rambling Rector rose! Paying the neighbours back for 27 yrs of their Leylandii. I did get to grips with the differences between ramblers and climbers.
Help please.

I've had no luck with previous rectors, church or rambling. Perhaps I should pray over it?

There you go then Galen that where you've been going wrong! wink Did you not give the others a proper requiem mass?

No! I'm C of E

Just bury them then - oh wait a minute, you tried that in the first place.

Don't the C of E ever do any Requiem Masses, not even a protestant version? Here speaks a former Methodist.
I am clearly a non conformist aren't I. I will wander off to sing some good Charles Wesley hymns.

whitewave, Could your pink rose be 'Albertine'? I have one clambering over a pergola arch. It flowers in June/July but is prone to blackspot.

I'll try
Come oh thou traveller Unknown
Lo He comes with clouds descending
And love divine
And not Wesley but
Cum Rhonda

Oh I will have a look. Thank you. The smell is glorious and it flowers its heart out every year. Divine

All our efforts with roses come to nothing, and they are my fave flowers(no surprise there). We have sandy soil, and whatever and wherever, all roses are awful.Weedy, blackspot, rust etc and we always sprayed and fed etc.
so, sadly, thay have all gone now in favour of other plants.

I have a few roses which I grow in tubs, most are hybrid teas, I never buy a rose that doesn't have a strong perfume. Hence my Margaret Merrill, which is white and has a perfume to die for.

'Margaret Merrill' is on my 'must plant' list this year and so is 'English Miss' with its faint blush of pink.

I'm hoping to create a bit of a white garden at the top end of a large border and as I grew these roses a few years ago I think they'll be ideal as I already have 'Iceberg' which is more of a pure white.

Certainly softer colours yellow creams or pinks.
How does anyone choose, there are just too many! The more I look at the harder it is to choose.

We'll have to remember this thread and post some photos when they all start flowering.

Nellie, Merlot, Annie - I was so pleased today to see the sun had brought out the first two blooms on Geoffrey Hamilton. He has masses of buds this year they gave me a real boost!
Even Abraham Darby (who spend far too long being neglected in a pot) has some nice fat buds. Looking forward to the scent of both roses.

Nellie - I've been wanting Rosa Delahaye for years, love the scent and colour, maybe I'll treat myself!
