Garden fairy lights - on trend or naff?

I am thinking of putting something with solar powered lights on a newish west-facing fence. I have planted climbers but it is rather bare at the moment. I have noticed lights in neighbouring gardens and like some of them. What do GNetters think? These are two of the options I am considering.

We have several threads of warm white solar lights along the fence. A good feature of them is that if dull and haven't charged they can be charged using a USB lead. I love our lights. My sister's garden is full of solar lights, white, coloured, laser, butterflies, lizards etc etc etc. In my opinion way over the top, but she loves them. All down to personal preference.

I love naff gardens - and so do the GC! We have 2 large gnomes and some smaller 'sculptures'as well as larger 'proper' ones and at the first sign of summer out comes the bunting!!! We have fairy lights indoors too which are on most of the year. Love it!

I love the multi-coloured ones in the picture. I had some white ones on my pergola, but the squirrels nibbled through the cable. Hubby managed to mend them on the first occasion, but since then they have been nibbled again, and only about one third of the string works. Apparently they can't be repaired again. confused

Must admit they do look pretty in a garden love the butterfly ones.

We have 3 lovely metal figures, a cockerel , an owl and a hedgehog. The solar lights can be coloured or white and look gorgeous at night. One persons naff is another's elegant. The garden is the place where your pleasure is what matters.

Who cares whether they're on trend or not? If you want 'em - go for it!

I bought solar lights like the second set in your pics I Bought from Amazon and I bough two sets. They are brilliant. Light up nearly all night. I got up about 3.30 and they were on even though some days the unit for charging was not in full sun. They are on sale at the moment www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01DW3HF4A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=gransnetforum-21

Indeed why not, shysal. smile. Your robin looks like the NT three! If you fancy more there are types which sit directly on the ground, or in our case on a water feature and on two lengths of metal holder. We have one of each. I love them. Our family does not but hey, who cares?

You are right that batteries can be replaced, usually works, sometimes doesn't. Garden Centres sell the replacement batteries. We use re-chargeable batteries in many things and find that putting the original batteryto charge indoors often revitalises them. Just be sure the charger is appropriate for the batteries.

Have fun with your lights. smile.

I have some garden lights which i love to look at when its dark, my main garden is at the back, living room is at the back, so i can always see them
I have some lovely icicle ones, but i think the batteries have run out and not easy to replace, but my globe lights need the batteries replacing which i intend to do this week

shysal Wed 19-Jul-17 09:01:01

Cornergran, I don't know whether the robin is NT, it was a present for cat-sitting.
BlueBelle, the batteries in solar lights do lose their power after a year of two. Some are replaceable though.
I have decided on the butterfly and the fairy lights. Why not?

It appeared in my garden on the morning of my birthday, must have flown there,

gillybob Wed 19-Jul-17 08:36:02

I have been looking for a life size flamingo Iam64 soooooooo envy

Iam64 Wed 19-Jul-17 08:25:54

I call my garden extras 'kitch', rather tha 'naff'' ?. I have a life sized flamingo, a copper sun, several metal birds on poles that can be seen peeping through the foliage, wind chimes and more. Adding these nonsense items came along with retirement.
The solar lights died but shysal's question has prompted me to put them on my shopping list.

Oh my DGC still love that book Jalima and know the words by heart. smile

kittylester Wed 19-Jul-17 07:30:28

I suspect that they are naff but I wish dh would agree to have some! grin

Jalima1108 Tue 18-Jul-17 23:32:05

Three owls and I shall call them Sarah, Percy and Bill smile

Jalima1108 Tue 18-Jul-17 23:31:05

That's what our garden is lacking - a wind catcher and a few more ornaments. I fancy two or three metal owls.

Jalima1108 Tue 18-Jul-17 23:29:13

DH has put some along the path - at least the fox/cats/hedgehog etc can see which way to go to do their business at night.

BlueBelle Tue 18-Jul-17 23:08:57

I had some solar lights that no longer come on Do they wear out after a while ? they used to light up for the best part of a year now no longer but I ll get some more I used to like seeing them at night twinkling when I got in bed If they re naff so be it I like them

Charleygirl Tue 18-Jul-17 22:20:53

I had solar lights in the rear garden and they were stolen. Whoever took them had to be fit because the fencing is 6 foot high. I have more but I am rather loathe to display them because I think that there maybe a repeat performance.

cornergran Tue 18-Jul-17 22:01:59

Is that a National Trust robin, shysal, if so we have three smile. We have white solar lights in bushes at each end of our garden, a few of those on stakes and some fence post lights. I love them. our grandchildren adore them, say it's like Christmas. If it were me I'd go for the butterfly. When you decide which you like the most go for it, why not?

Imperfect27 Tue 18-Jul-17 20:16:28

Just this weekend, DH bought me three strings of LED stars which we now have running along the garden fence. I am really pleased with them - 'gold', rather than white light. the stars are small - only about an inch in diameter. They have brought a smile to me every evening so far. Not tacky - just lovely!

Lona Tue 18-Jul-17 20:04:54

Thong!!!
