This was bought as a hollyhock.

I purchased three of these plants from Ebay a while ago, supposed to be hollyhocks. One has just come into flower. Does anyone know what it is please? A plant finder app came up with no results. The flower is a brighter purple than the picture.

EllanVannin

It's very much like a plant called bears breeches. Wait and see what the flower's like.

no its not that

Glad you've solved the problem. It looks rather good.

That’s great shysal I’m glad we got there in the end! I just wish I could grow it in my garden.

UPDATE. Thanks to Shrub I have identified the plant as Valerian Pyrenaica. This on line picture of the leaf stalk clinched it. Apologies to those who also suggested Valerian, it doesn't match the usual varieties. I have enjoyed the plant, which is now spreading fluffy seeds, so may have more next year. Many thanks for all the suggestions.

The machines are taking over - and so are the plants apparently. grin Quick thought, does anyone know what a young triffid looks like?

shysal Fri 21-May-21 12:47:21

Typo or autocorrect, Pippa!smile

PippaZ Fri 21-May-21 08:59:09

Butterbur - not butternut shysal although that could just have been a typo.

Flowers look like Valeriana officinalis, but the leaves are different. Do please update us, I am intrigued.

shysal Thu 20-May-21 22:31:12

Nope. Flowers are wrong for butternut, and leaves wrong for eupatorium which flowers in late summer.

Callistemon Thu 20-May-21 21:36:09

One thing's for sure - it's not a hollyhock!

PippaZ Thu 20-May-21 21:19:03

Could it be a Butterbur?

T looks like a type of Eupatorium, known as Joe Pie Weed. Most varieties are tall, but there is a little Joe.
Not a weed in the Uk, but known as one in the USA.

I still haven't identified this plant. It has grown taller, but the other two with the same leaves have no flower heads.

Shysal any more news on this plant?

Magrithea Mon 17-May-21 15:35:32

Definitely not Bear's Breeches - I have that in two slightly different varieties and the flowers come on a tall stem not close to the base

Aldom Sun 16-May-21 22:35:36

Catnip and Valerian are two different plants. Catnip has purple flowers and Valerian has pink flowers. Cats like them both.

shysal Fri 14-May-21 21:25:11

The leaf stalks are now red with a single groove down them containing a light stripe! Leaves about the size of a saucer.
Going to look up Angelica which has a square stem I think.

kittylester Fri 14-May-21 20:42:21

That isn't valerian - I can provide anyone who wants some with valerian we have tone.

TBsNana Fri 14-May-21 11:56:04

It's Valerian - otherwise known as Catnip!

ukcarolm my latest search found mustard plant to be similar but the flowers seem to always be white or yellow and mine is lilac.

Lewie, many thanks for the offer but I have bought enough. I know most of them won't come again next year despite allowing to dry and spreading the seeds.

Callistemon Thu 13-May-21 19:49:23

shysal
We're all agog!
I hope the flowers come out soon and we can make a decision

Caro57 Thu 13-May-21 19:47:51

It looks a bit like Mint that has gone to flower

Ukcarolm Thu 13-May-21 19:05:20

my app says Garlic mustard.

Aldom Thu 13-May-21 18:35:12
