Cordless Lawnmowers

DH has been struggling with back problems, mowing our back and front lawns. Both are on a slight slope. My wonderful stepson has offered to come and cut it weekly as he no longer has grass at his home to do. Our old mower is heavy and we want to buy a cordless one to make the job easier. I could also then have a go at it - possibly. It's not a huge garden but the back is quite big. Sorry not good on sizes. I would think it could all be done in about 30 mins time. Any recommendations would be really appreciated. Thanks

We have a Macallister cordless. It definitely makes life easier than a non-cordless, even if it means yet another battery to recharge. I paid close attention to the weights when choosing it, and went for the lightest, but I still find it blooming heavy. Am I happy with it? Overall yes. It does the job well enough though there is some rubbery stuff on the handle which has started crumbling. Also The grass collector strikes me as a bit flimsy, so I'm not sure how long that will last.

Not a cordless one but our lightweight hover mower served us well for many years. No good if you want stripes though!

If you get a cordless with a roller then you will get stripes. I have recently replaced a Bosch with a Karcher and in my opinion the Bosch was far superior. They both easily coped with an hour of mowing.

Why not involve the son in law with the decision?
Maybe go with him to look at some first to get an idea?

We have just bought a new cordless lawnmower and it’s great. Easy to use and store and light to use. It is by Greenworks. There is currently a good offer on them plus free next day delivery.

We have the Gtech and would give it 10/10. We love their carpet sweepers too.

I’ve got a Spear and Jackson one, it’s my second cordless. My first one was a Bosch, and lasted six years. This one is on year two, I like it because it is a bit heavier, which makes mowing my large bumpy lawn easier because it doesn’t skip over the top of the more hollow sections, it’s not too heavy though, still much lighter than a petrol mower. It’s also got a wider cutting blade - if there was one thing I’d advise you to do, it is to get a wider blade, because it takes less time to cut the lawn that way.

Perhaps now is the time to consider going wild? I've got a wonderful crop of dandelions! lol

I have a Greenworks rechargeable battery mower. It's fine on my back grass which is fairly flat but it complains bitterly when I'm doing the front, which is thick and rather lumpy. It's just 'not man enough' for the job.

I found our cordless lawn mower much, much lighter than the one that had a flex.

Unfortunately, the one we bought was not strong enough to tackle our rough grass, so I am back to using an electric mower with a flex.

I have a Mountfield. No complaints. So much quicker than the push mower, and no cables to bother about!

My DH age 75 has the Greenworks battery lawn mower. He bought the one with the widest cut and 2 batteries. We have a lot of lawn. He is very pleased after 3 years of use. A great first cut once again this year. It also has a booster setting for days when you might need that extra bit of push if you have a back issue. Highly recommend.

PS. Our back of house lawn is also on a slope.

we also have spear and jackson and it is very good and very light and easy to use

When out trusty old petrol mower gave up, we bought a Metabo cordless, highly recommended by a friend, we had always had petrol but decided it might be a good idea to
It’s brilliant, my husband loves it, definitely wouldn’t go back.

I have some arthritis in my hands, and I struggle to remove the battery from the mower to recharge.

Apparently Aldi have a robot mower on special offer on line, any use?

Luckygirl3 Sun 27-Apr-25 17:06:34

I have a brand new robot mower- it is brilliant and saves bothering/paying others to mow the grass.

Nibbles44 Sun 27-Apr-25 17:18:24

Careful which brand you buy, many cheap mowers are expected to last one season, then be discarded, thereforew no spare parts or service available. However, depending on how you look after it they can last a few years.

Kate1949 Sun 27-Apr-25 17:26:58

We were thinking about a robot mower but our lawn has flower borders. What does the mower do when it comes to a flower border?

Luckygirl3 Sun 27-Apr-25 18:04:00

I have a Flymo EasyLife Go 250 - the 250 refers to the square meterage of my lawn - you can get bigger or smaller.

There is a thin guide wire that you put round the area you wish to mow, about 6 inches away from the flower borders. It mows up to the border then turns itself round and trots off in another direction. The wire is staked in with little stakes which embed themselves in the grass along with the wire. It is fascinating to watch at it seems to be mowing randomly but it all gets done.

There is an app for my phone from which I can set schedules for mowing. At present I have it mowing every other day between 9am to 10pm - it pottles around on and off all day, taking itself off to its dock to recharge. This is what they recommend during the summer.

The lawn looks great. Because it is being mown so frequently the trimmings (which are tiny) just drop back onto the grass and feed it.

I have become quite attached to "Dave"..... I will miss him in the winter ......

I'm a bit late to the thread, BUT if it's any help, LIDL have robot lawn mowers at £199 just now, I saw the advert yesterday while I was in there.

I have a Ryobi cordless. It's on sturdy wheels so can be pushed around easily, but is very lightweight so I can pick it up if necessary. It's generally very easy to use, the only real problem is getting the battery in and out as it's quite big for my hands - I can only just stretch my hands over the top.

I also have a cordless Spear & Jackson. I see Argos at the moment have a good offer on as it includes a grass trimmer too. Both with a 3 year guarantee.

I have also heard that hover lawn mowers are supposed to be good too but I've never used one.
