Help! which plant is this?

Never had problems with hostas when I grew them in an area of the garden the moles frequented.

Another vote for hosta. Keep them away from slugs. Mine are in pots off the ground and still get nibbled a bit.

Have you now solved your plant mystery Willow3 ? I thought it was a hosta.

Hostas in plots are safe from slugs.

Hosta mine are in the border with a gravel bed they look great never had a problem with slugs

Its a hosta, mine look like this at the moment, they'll soon be opening up.
For slug control spray garlic mixed with water on the hostas they don't like the smell.
My hosts are in pots, but slugs attack them!
Enjoy the purple flowers they produce.

My hostas are nowhere near as far on as the plant in the picture - they are only just poking their noses above the soil in the pots they are in, so, depending where you live, it might be a hosta that has developed further on than mine or it could be something quite different. The fun will be in the waiting to see what unfurls 😁.

I'm sure it's a hosta. I love these mystery plants. As others have said if you see slug and snails marching towards it in numbers it's a hosta.

I think Lily of the Valley too mine are just flowering and look just like that.

A bit too plump for L-o-t-V and there would be a show of flower buds, even at this size.

It's my understanding that there's something in coffee which acts as a "neurotoxin" for slugs. Also that they don't like the smell of coffee, or the "gritty" texture of grounds. However it seems there are some plants which don't "like" coffee. (It's worth a Google search for full info.)

We have several hosta plants but hardly get any slug damage. We have a pond which gets frogspawn (After the first full moon in February). This year we have had a couple of very tame ducks , so don't know if they have left us any frogspawn. The more frogs we get , the less slugs appear.

I have about 15 different varieties of hosta in pots on my patio. Last year I decided to try garlic spray as I am averse to using slug pellets unless absolutely necessary. It worked a treat!

A whole bulb of garlic in 2 litres of water, boil it up until the garlic goes soft, mash it up to get all the juices out and then strain. 2 tablespoons in 2 litres of water and spray every week or so.

Be careful with coffee grounds because they will still contain some caffeine, which is a poison to plants. So don’t use them too thickly near something precious. I just use them as a soil improver and scatter them thinly. I don’t have room for a compost heap or they would go there.

It’s a hosta. I have had a small collection of hostas in pots for some years - the pots have slugstoppa tape around the top and they have never been eaten. I wouldn’t plant them in the ground. Sometime this year I’m going to de-pot them and divide them up. Some pieces will go to DD who is creating a new shade garden.

It's a hosta. Lots of much the same photos on Google lens. Mine be used to be eaten to shreds until DH started putting his hair clippings over the emerging leaves. So far they look ok but time will tell.

Bought two hostas today. Overly excited. A gardener for 40 years, have never beaten the slugs.
We’ve downsized to an apartment with a lovely big terrace, 4 floors up. Hoping beyond hope that the height will beat the slugs and snails.

Looks like a hosta to me too. We have loads, some in pots. The ones with blue-green leaves seem to do okay planted in the ground as they have quite thick leaves.

We don't get much slug damage but when I have hostas in pots by the front door the leaves get taken apart by insects.

I am eagerly anticipating more growth now, thank you all here and the coffee tip and the photo tip. ☺️

Coffee grounds also are good to deter slugs. The Google search mentioned by Luckygirl should identify the plant. Good luck!

Oh, I didn't know about coffee grounds, I have always wanted to find a use for them. Are there no snags as regards using them?

Will do search later I want to use it for a few things! In and out right now, but here is looking down the plant and its not really helpful.
