What was the first record you bought?

Mine was 'Roulette' by Russ Conway. Not very proud of that!

I loved Keith Relf, too.

Actually, I've rethought and I think 'Sorrow' was my first but no idea who it was by. That's old age for yousad

One of the most beautiful songs ever and certainly the most beautiful voice.

Listened to the radio all night waiting for this to come on; Keith Relf was my first big crush, but not sure why I didn't fancy Jeff Beck in those days,,,,

Gorgeous. Never realised they kind of morphed into the excellent 10cc (see their Wikipedia entry).

I loved the Mindbenders version kittylester. Wasn't to keen on the Phil Collins one.

This is a lovely thread, Isthis - thank you for thinking of it!. I bet everyone has had a lovely surge of nostalgia thinking back to old, happy times.

Groovy Kind of Love - The Mindbenders (possibly?)

Oh yes, my fault - clicked on the wrong link! blush

Ana; no that was referring to Hazel Winter. I was very much into Hazel's music when we were fighting to save Bombardier the other year. BBC4 had a programme about Mrs Mills t'other night isthis, although she wasn't a 'novelty act' as such. That Dan Fogelberg song is beautifully crafted, albeit very much 'of it's time'. It was hard work in the days of vinyl constantly having to move the stylus to play a particular track! I must disappear into utube land and listen to some more of his stuff.....

Here's my first, "Roulette" by Russ Conway. Still thrilling and exactly 2 minutes long:

You can skip the first 50 seconds of this next one - Russ Conway playing Side Saddle - I'm reminded of how cheesy and posed TV Variety shows were then. Is this Billy Cotton? Father of Bill Cotton, who much later became Head of Light Entertainment and then Controller of BBC1. If you look closely early on in Conway's performance you'll see that Conway lacked the tip of his 3rd finger on his right hand. Amazing that it didn't stop him playing this way:

Whatever happened to the "novelty piano act"? Russ Conway, but also Winifred Atwell and many more. Disappeared with out trace I reckon. Chas & Dave not the same thing at all!

crimson wow, every day's a schoolday. Here's As The Raven Flies - Dan Fogelberg. Have to admit, I'd never heard of him before. He sounds pretty good!

The facts curriculum

Looking at the subjects proposed to be covered by Years 1 and 2 I'm wondering how my DGDs (aged 6) are going to get their heads around the idea that the Magna Carta limited the power of the monarch, never mind studying the Roman Invastion of Britain in 43AD! confused

Ana Mon 29-Oct-12 16:22:42

Did/do only 'lefties' like Pink Floyd then, crimson? confused wink

NanaNel Mon 29-Oct-12 16:05:19

I'm into something good. Herman's Hermits.
