What was the first record you bought?

Mine was 'Roulette' by Russ Conway. Not very proud of that!

If someone hasn't blued a link, if I just highlight it it comes up in my Google search box and is accessible that way.

Singing the Blues Tommy Steele. Loved Del Shannon and Gene Pitney.
Never did like Elvis much although everybody went to see the films.

I loved the story of Sweet Baby James; he had to write it quickly as gift to his friend's child; just imagine having that song written about you smile. Dan Fogelberg was very much of the same time/ilk. I really must get my head round these links; on other forums we have great long threads of utube links. A great way to get to hear new music or stuff you wouldn't normally play. By the way, if anyone lives in the Derby/Nottingham area we have Ashley Hutchings and Blair Dunlop playing at our village hall on Friday night. Tickets haven't sold out yet, and we do want a packed room; this is quite a coup for our little village. Anyone interested just pm me for details.

Here's the link, it worked for me, and thanks isthis I'm a big fan of James Taylor smile

crimson Sun 28-Oct-12 11:33:24

...kept his hair, though wink...

crimson Sun 28-Oct-12 11:32:53

...and, if it is James Taylor, can I add Dan Fogelbergs 'As the Raven Flies'; have just listened to it on utube not having heard it since I almost wore it out on my record player. Sad to read that he died at 56; was very underrated imo. Beautifully crafted song ATRF....

crimson Sun 28-Oct-12 11:21:36

Link isn't working, isthis but I wonder if it's James Taylor wink

A detour from the OP I know, this was a much later record purchase of mine but I practically wore the vinyl smooth! Great to hear it again, just look at the enraptured no-longer-young faces in the audience, but seeing what's happened to his lovely flowing locks is a bit of a shock smile

My mum wouldn't let me have a record player as she said I couldn't afford to buy records anyway, so she bought me a transistor radio instead. She was right, of course, and I listened to it non stop. I had to go to my boyfriends house to listen to my one and only record; the Pink Floyd one. hummingbird; I bet you remember that morning so vividly smile.

I agree. Lovely story hummingbird cupcake That's what I call ideal parenting.

Hummingbird what a lovely story! smile

My dad bought our first Dansette record player and with it, the top ten singles at the time, including Jim Reeves 'He'll Have To Go' and Russ Conway 'Side Saddle' both of which my parents liked. Yawn! grin

feetlebaum Sun 28-Oct-12 09:07:50

@GreatNan : "Blue Moon by Elvis. My dad 'accidentally' sat on it."

Your dad had taste - or his behind did!

Worst. Version. Ever. of Blue Moon - the middle eight bars were too complicated for them so they just left them out!

feetlebaum Sun 28-Oct-12 09:03:33

Blimey, you lot are young... all this post-rock 'n' roll stuff...

No Kay Starr, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Nat 'King' Cole?

Tsk... young grans of today, I dunno...

Humbertbear Sun 28-Oct-12 08:44:59

Gosh - these tracks bring back memories. mine was At the Hop by Danny and the Juniors and it's still a favourite. Whenever I hear it I have to get up and dance. When we got out first record player we were allowed 10 78s - Reet Petite, Diana, Great Balls of Fire and Peggy Sue were some of them.
Will today's youngsters remember their first download?

Nansypansy Sun 28-Oct-12 06:04:37

I didnt really like it, but my nan paid for my first record because she liked it! It was Magic Moments by Perry Como. Oooh that makes me feel old!

My mum asked us to recommend some records for her 'friend's daughter', as a surprise Christmas present. We were really jealous, as we didn't have a record player, but we suggested the Beatles EP with 'Fool on a Hill', Georgie Fame's 'Bonnie and Clyde', and the Monkees 'Daydream Believer'. Imagine our joy on Christmas morning when we woke to the Monkees record, at full blast! - they were really for us, along with a zipped Dansette record player. To this day, I fill up with emotion whenever I hear that track! Thank you mum!
