Names

It's the repetition of first names that have caused me problems. In big families the grandparents names appear several times over amongst the cousins so it's difficult to know if you have found the records for the correct person.

I have several Zenobias in my Cornish ancestry. Zenobia was an ancient Queen of Palmyra. How that name travelled to Cornwall in the 18th century is intriguing.

I’ve a Hephzibah in my family tree and so has DH (mine County Durham, his Yorkshire). Mine was known as Aunt Eppie. As for the men, my family has more Williams than you can shake a stick at, and his equivalent is Fred.

DH has a Twelvetta in his family tree. (I think they were running out of names by then!). She was born in Hull.

We have a Hepzibah (Midlands - Huguenots)

The Williams in Wales coupled with a Welsh surname, make it very difficult to track them,

William ,Thomas,John ,Alexander , Adam ,Charles all go back three or more generations
Mary ,Rose,Ellen , Annie, Jean, Frances ,Rebecca,Maria ,Marianne some still in use now as middle names .My family are Scots and Irish

Mum's background centuries ago had Biblical names, Isaac,,Israel,,Joshua,,Daniel,,Eli,,Jeremiah,,Jacob,,Abraham,,Aaron.

I'm just glad they stuck to the Old Testament and didn't call them Fear of the Lord, , or Wrath of God or something like that! They were all from the West Country and joined the Parliamentarians in the Civil War so their children got off lightly.

Elijah was big in our family. They lived in Somerset. Henry and William popular in Wales and southern England.

My father's family were all dissenters, they joined some pretty odd sects and mostly took Old Testament names, Moses,Eli, Noah, Jeremiah, Rebekah, Susannah etc.

I haven't noticed regional differences, probably because I haven't been looking for them. However, there is a 'feel' to the names used by my ancestors so, if the website suggests a person was a forebear, I can often tell by their name whether of not they are a likely candidate.

Same here Annie Our biblical names are from Lancashire eg. Moses, Aaron. The Southern family are William, Charles, Robert...
