Brrrr - What are you doing to keep warm

It really feels like winter now. What happened to that mild weather? Set to hover around freezing for the rest of the week at least.
Apart from lots of thin but warm layers and hot drinks what else to do?
Just about to go round and make sure all upstairs curtains closed and doors shut, which reduces heat loss.
I have ordered more fleecy blankets from Zara home sale. And some new merino gloves from the outdoor shop.
Sit with laptop on knees instead of table...
I have also bought a fan heater so that if I am at home I can just heat the room I am in, instead of whole 3 stories.
Other thoughts on keeping warm?

True whatis people suffering from hypothermia do not feel cold in fact they often undress thus compounding the problem.
I keep my house heated at all times, saves rooms getting damp. When I was first married we lived in a house with just a coal fire which meant by bedroom was freezing. The clothes and shoes went mouldy in the wardrobe and were ruined. Sitting in low temperatures is not good for blood flow either.

You need to be wary of keeping the heat too low while you are sitting. My daughter heard on the radio the other day that much older people might not even feel cold, until bad things happen. sad

Why daughter thought she had to warn me of this , I'm not sure! I'm not that old!! grin

Hope you make it in your nice new squall coat Mamie! Looking forward to mine arriving soon.

Mamie Thu 09-Feb-12 08:11:12

I am really glad people are buying the squall coats (even though a bit miffed that I paid over £100 seven years ago). I love Lands End stuff, comfy, good quality, seems to last for ever...

Is the Squall Coat a secret sign of Gransnet, like the Masons handshake grin grin

I am keeping warm fretting about whether I will be able to get out of here to go to England to look after my DGDs for half-term. I haven't seen them for three months and the thought of not getting there is driving me mad...

I keep the heating on low (5 deg) all the time. Only turn it up to 10 deg when I'm sitting watching TV. I shut the door leading to upstairs to prevent all the heat rising, put a warm laptop on my lap, wear a micro-fleecy type dressing gown and put a blanket/throw over me. Hot drinks help boost the heat and more often than not I'm TOO warm.

I went shopping on my bike. Big mistake! Forgot earmuffs. Leather gloves were totally ineffective. Does feel good when you get back in though. smile

Ha ha whatisamashedupphrase - cheeky! I am very new here and I love it already!

GoldenGran Wed 08-Feb-12 17:41:17

I have also bought a squall coat today from LE! What a bargain, how many others have now bought one, should we post photos of us all wearing one! Mine's aubergine.smile

yogagran Wed 08-Feb-12 17:40:25

That's exactly my problem whatamess and if I dither much longer they'll all be sold sad

JessM Wed 08-Feb-12 17:36:25

Glad to hear it suzie
I have been wearing a skirt today. This is not as insane or out of character as it sounds. When i went to the FILM PREMIERE last night (see other thread) i wore my boots with 2 pairs of leggings and a stretchy black mini skirt (about 20 years old and extracted from newly organised wardrobe) and boots. Turns out this is a cosy way to proceed. Have been wearing just the one set of leggings, skirt and boots in the house today, and it has kept my backside nice and cosy. smile

whatisamashedupphrase Wed 08-Feb-12 17:35:37

No it isn't!!!!!! shock it's 16.

whatisamashedupphrase Wed 08-Feb-12 17:35:00

I just hate it when you get 16 in two sizes of the same thing. ie 14-16 OR 16-18! Which do you go for. (my size is 126)

Ken Bruce programme on Radio 2 is good for dancing. Especially from 9.30 to just before 10. smile

I like your name SusietheGreat. (that would be 'great' as in fantastic, wouldn't it? Not..... no! of course not!) smile

Butternut Wed 08-Feb-12 17:30:33

Just bought one of LE's squall coats - great bargain. smile
Thanks for all the info.

SusietheGreat Wed 08-Feb-12 17:26:06

I did this crazy thing today... I danced in my living room to some music that was on the TV!! It certainly warmed me up a bit (even if my dance moves were not that of my younger years!)

Go on Glamma you'd need ten of those to match Bagitha's recent spend grin

glammanana Wed 08-Feb-12 15:53:35

yogagran The sizes are very good and I would tend to go for the L if you are 14-16 as they are very warm and you don't need too much padding underneath them,I have ordered the 12-14 and will wear it with a full length cotton T-shirt but I cannot bear to be too bulky, you will love it if you order,I also like the "shimmer down parka" and am in two minds as to order, but I can't justify buying two.sad

Hi there. Yes my DS said really hot in N island too, and he is enjoying his paddleboarding.

Greatnan Wed 08-Feb-12 14:41:51

I blame Singapore Airlines for giving out apples after lunch when we were en route for Auckland. I just put mine in my bag and forgot it.
My flat is wonderfully insulated - I left it unheated for a week and when I got back from Switzerland yesterday it was 5C inside, and -15C on the balcony. I have flats above, below and on both sides, and I close the wooden shutters and the heavy curtains - the French windows are double glazed.
I gave up on cross country skiing because it was just too cold, but I did enjoy snow shoe walking. Forget the old tennis racquet type, modern raquettes are very high tech, like short skis with a turned up front.

My NZ daughter was so hot when out walking the dogs on Rabbit Island yesterday, that she just ran into the sea, fully dressed, followed by the surprised dogs. I wonder where she gets her eccentricity from!

Seventimesfive Wed 08-Feb-12 11:45:06

Seasider Thanks for that! I have a jacket from Cotton Traders which I have had for three years and the zip has just gone. I was reluctant to buy another winter jacket at this time of the year, but this is too good an offer to miss!

yogagran Wed 08-Feb-12 10:13:51

I would like to get one of these coats - they look really good and have been reduced by a huge amount. Can any of you tell me if the sizing if accurate. I'm normally a 14-16 so do I order a a 14-16 or do I go for the bigger 16-18? Thanks in advance

JessM Wed 08-Feb-12 09:27:51

Yes they are!

GoldenGran Wed 08-Feb-12 07:45:18

I miss getting one of those coats every year,I am going on line today to get one. Are they by any lovely chance, on sale?
