I am so fed up with this cough

It all started last July with a sinus/ear thing. I went deaf in one ear because of all the gunge and it never really cleared up. Cue winter and I start to suffer from my usual crop of coughs and colds and ended up with very nasty chest infection around the turn of the year. I've had antibiotics, steroids (they did work but can't stay on them for ever), increase in my asthma inhalers both preventer and reliever, steroid nasal spray and now I'm on meds which are meant to reduce allergic response. I'm still coughing. It's not as bad as it was but I'm still experiencing bouts of explosive, barking, uncontrollable coughing a couple of times a day whuch leave me shaky and tired out. I sound like a seal. I've had a chest X-ray which is all clear but I'm constantly at the doc. I'm now almost apologetic as I sidle in which is silly....it's not my fault it's not clearing up, but I'm starting to feel guilty about always being there. I don't want to do very much at the moment in case it starts the cough-dental hygienist on Wednesday is going to be fun. I'm getting very dispirited, I just don't know what to do

The bug seemed to hit late this year - most of the family are usually well by this time of year. It seems weird to be coughing and hacking when the sun is shining.

It feels all wrong, doesn't it. DBH's started back in early December, and he has only just finished. It's hard to tell where the cough ends and hayfever begins, for both of us.

Mine started in November with very painful sinusitis and just went on from there, through flu in January, chest infection, and now it's all got mixed up with tree pollen allergies - sinus pain, headache, cough and snuffle. sad

Me too! Do you get a horrible popping noise? Awful!

I'm getting quite despondent about it all. I keep hoping that different treatment/meds from my doctor will put an end to it , but nothing so far seems to have touched it. It's affecting my day to day life quite badly although I do try to keep going and carry on as normal. This works up to a point, but is leaving me exhausted by 9pm. I made myself go to a concert on Sunday with DH and had to ball up my jacket and use it to muffle the cough. I'm starting to feel as if I'm going to have this for ever or die from it. Not logical, I know, but my mood is being affected-hard to be cheery when you're coughing so much. I'm used to coughing/wheezing as I'm asthmatic but this isn't like an asthma cough at all. Not a good day today, I'm afraid.

Have you tried the Vick Vapour Rub on the soles of your feet at night? It helped me a few years ago.

Katek, no consolation but my symptoms lasted for nearly a year. Like you I had a chest xray, steroid and other inhalers, antibiotics, the lot, without effect.

The only consolation is that finally it did clear and I have been remarkably healthy for the last five years since having it.

Persistent coughing is so wearing - you must be thoroughly exhausted Katek. I do hope that it will start to abate soon.

Thank you all for your kind words and support. I'm sorry to hear that so many of you are suffering as well, I hope that all of you start to feel better very soon. It has helped me to put my situation in perspective - was feeling quite alone with it all. I don't think my family appreciate how unwell and tired I feel - it's almost as if it's a mere nuisance that I shouid put to one side and just get on with things. Not much quarter given by them I'm afraid.

I finally saw the doctor today, because five months of various inflictions is more than enough. I managed some impressive wheezing when he listened to my chest and he has prescribed an antibiotic - the kind that leaves a nasty taste - well, I had that already! Hope everyone else is feeling better for the good weather this month. Wrap up well if, as they say, it is going to get colder at the weekend.

This is strange as we had a friend visit us a few days ago with the same thing and he had seen his GP twice over the last few months, but cannot shake the cough and feeling of chestiness etc.Even had two lots of antibiotics. It must be really wearing.

Oh janerowena those horrible popping noises. They almost drove me mad at night till I felt like screaming.

It wouldn't be so bad if they would only keep to a rhythm! I have given in and started to take herbal Nytol. Because what with my coughing and popping and DBH's snoring because he too has been suffering from yet another cold, it was all getting a bit much.
