Worried about DGS aged 4

Hope he is properly better now and if he is eating for England he will soon put the weight back on again!

My grandson at age 4 developed Achalasia which is very rare in young children. He couldn't keep anything down, even water as the food could not get through to his stomach. He had (still has) no muscle tone in his oesophagus so peristalsis doesn't happen, and the sphincter leading to the stomach was permanently tightly closed so hardly anything could get through. He lost a lot of weight, had no energy and had to carry a sick bag round with him , poor little chap. There is no cure for this but eventually he had an operation at Gt Ormond St hospital to cut the ring of muscle (sphincter) so it is now permanently open. He still has to eat very carefully and avoid some foods, but his recovery has been amazing. He's grown and put on weight and got all his energy back - can play football etc.
It doesn't sound like the same thing but was my first thought when I read your posts. I can imagine your anxiety as I was beside myself with worry at the time.

polyP I am glad that your GS has had some treatment for his condition and that he is living life to the full.

My DGS has turned a corner and is much more like his normal self.

I really hope that corner has been well and truly turned. Your DD and SIL must be so relieved. Now to get that weight back on .

I've just read all of these posts and just wanted to say I hope your little grandson is now well on the road to recovery after what sounds like an horrendous illness. It's awful when they're so ill isn't it especially when the doctors can't seem to find a cause.

Just heard from DD and after one day seeming OK,the poor little chap retched from 4 pm to midnight yesterday. We just have to wait and see. I do wonder whether it is really a bug as they say as the pattern is so odd.

Could it be malrotation of the bowel ? I am sure your DH will have considered this possibility so don't mind me thinking aloud.
I do hope you get some answers soon as this is very worrying for the whole family.

Oh no! What a disappointment. Definitely watch out for pain round tummy button which goes down to right side. Hope it's just a bug taking it's time.

Oh my goodness! That's awful! It sounds much more complicated than "a bug". The whole point of up-chucking is to get rid of bugs fast and that doesn't seem to be happening. Have they been back to the GP?

Just seen this and read the posts re improvement, but now it's starting again.
That must be awful for you all and doesn't sound as if it can be just a bug.
Is he getting dehydrated with all the vomiting?

Sorry to hear it's not going well for your grandson luckygirl. Even if his gut was made very sensitive by a nasty bug it does seem to be taking a long time to settle down. Hope the GP is listening to your daughter's concerns.

If he has another episode (and I do hope he doesn't) can they take him to A&E while he is being sick and in pain so that they can see how bad he is?
Is he having something at lunch-time that he is violently allergic to?

How worrying - just when you thought he was on the mend. Just wondering if your husband could accompany him to the hospital and insist it's investigated further - I'm sure a bug shouldn't behave like this. Poor little guy - his parents must be so worried about him. I hope they get to the bottom of it.

Luckygirl just wondering how your little GS is today. Poor little man is having an awful time. Surely the medics must do some further investigations to find out the cause of his horrible pain and sickness.

I mentioned this to DD and she reminded me that she once had a bug which had a similar effect. She would be fine in the morning but get worse and worse through the day. It went on for a long time and really wore her down.

Thanks for your interest - you are all very kind. Today he has not retched or vomited which is good - he is still not right though - tired and not himself. We have our fingers crossed that the diagnosis of a bug is correct and that he will recover soon - it does seem to be a long job though. If it does not settle fully in the next week I know they will be straight back to the doctor. He has had the odd day without vomiting or retching before and then gone backwards, so we just have to hope that he gradually settles. Poor little chap - we are dying to feed him up and get some flesh back on his bones.

I've been thinking about your little GS Luckygirl - is there any more news? Hope there hasn't been a repeat of yesterday's awful episode
