Can stress cause it?

Stress is always bad for the digestive system. It increases the amount of acid. I suppose it is part of the "getting ready for flight or fight" reaction, More acid could digest stomach contents faster, the energy from the food would be available sooner and the blood supply could then ignore the digestive tract and concentrate on muscles for running or fighting.

Elegran, I have looked at my diary, it started when I was moving , so much went wrong and at the same time my daughter was rushed to hospital , this year has been so stressful, the drop in centre closing, my daughter has really played up, and still is, I was upset deciding to resign from my position in the local party , granddaughter waiting for her A level results, my sisters cutting me off, think stressful is the right word.

All that one after the other,. no wonder you are stressed! Have you told your GP about it all? You would probably benefit from a course of stress-busting pills.

It is good advice to turn off your phone at night too, You need uninterrupted sleep.

Not told her Elegran, didn't connect them, they were just problems to try and work through .

I will turn the phone off, don't want a repeat of last night It was so distressing .

Proof I am a pea brain

I don't think we sometimes realise how much stress we're under until afterwards. Or how it affects us physically. I had irregular heartbeat and some very funny turns - possibly a small stroke - and couldn't make out why. Then a friend pointed out all the disasters and worry I was having in my life at that time and it all became clear!

I hope your life is more on an even keel now Annie, just realising what's at the bottom of all your problems should help.

I have taken omeprazole for about 8 years for severe indigestion. My GP is now worried that the drugs could be masking the cause of the indigestion and I’m to have a gastroscopy on Thursday. Having googled the symptoms, I am now terrified that I’ve got either oesophageal or stomach cancer. Can anyone give me some more cheery possible diagnoses?

I've been taking omeprazole for at least ten years and had three gastroscopies and a colonoscopy none of which has shown any abnormalities except for a small hiatus hernia. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a cause of your problems too. I find that if I eat too much bread it makes me feel full and sometimes even makes me regurgitate. I also take Gaviscon Advance last thing at night and Ranitidine. All these medications were originally prescribed by an ENT consultant to deal with acid reflux which was damaging my vocal chords. Good luck with your gastroscopy. Be grateful that your GP is thorough.

Olga - like annodomini, Gastroscopy showed hiatus hernia. I take ranitidine, which though not as long lasting as Omeprazole seems to have fewer side effects when taken long term. Bread, pastry etc are the worst culprits for me.

It could be gastritis/hiatus hernia/ulcer and I know stress plays a big part too. Have it checked and then you can relax.

Olga, DH suffered from this for many years and had a repeat prescription for omeprazole. He was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in March this year and after research went on a low carb diet. The result is normal blood sugar readings, over 30 pounds lost and no acid reflux. He used to eat a lot of bread, potatoes, cakes and pastry all of which have disappeared from his diet except two slices of seeded bread a day.

Thank you, Jane43. I had a gastroscopy today and pleased to say nothing majorly wrong - a little inflammation in 5ne duodenum and a small hiatus hernia. This is a big relief! I was interested in your comments about bread, cake, etc, as I think they really make my symptoms worse, and I intend to do without them as much as possible from now on. Thank you for your comments.

Thank you, BlueSky. It is indeed a hiatus hernis - and I have had a lot of stress recently, too. I am feeling very much better this even8ng, after my gastroscopy!

Hi all, I am new here and been suffering with acid reflux for many years now. Has any one of you experienced burning tongue/mouth/throat and fullness of ears beside of indigestion. Thanks for sharing.

im suffering badly from acid reflux bloating burping sore throat and keep belching what do you recommend Gaviscon has not had any effect any thoughts please thanks

Due to a faulty bile duct I suffer a lot from acid reflux. I have been told to avoid spicy food, large meals and anything with a high acid content. Also not to leave it to long in between meals, so I eat little and often and have a glass of milk if medication doesn't work.
