Acid reflux

I have been suffering from this recently. I fear it is due to falling off the low carb wagon and eating too much bread. I was interested to read on the low carb support thread that carbs are thought to cause reflux.
How do others manage this problem? My GP suggested eating little and often (rather than my usual lots and often!) and taking Gaviscon. She thinks the irritating cough I thought was due to blood pressure meds was probably through soreness from the acid.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Due to a faulty bile duct I suffer a lot from acid reflux. I have been told to avoid spicy food, large meals and anything with a high acid content. Also not to leave it to long in between meals, so I eat little and often and have a glass of milk if medication doesn't work.

Hi all, I am new here and been suffering with acid reflux for many years now. Has any one of you experienced burning tongue/mouth/throat and fullness of ears beside of indigestion. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you - hiatus hernia it is. Am feeling very relieved having had that diagnosis.

Olga Thu 15-Nov-18 21:54:01

Thank you so much - and you were right on all points. Gastroscopy today showed small hiatus hernia. Feeling very relieved and grateful.

Olga Thu 15-Nov-18 21:52:43

Thank you, BlueSky. It is indeed a hiatus hernis - and I have had a lot of stress recently, too. I am feeling very much better this even8ng, after my gastroscopy!

Thank you, Jane43. I had a gastroscopy today and pleased to say nothing majorly wrong - a little inflammation in 5ne duodenum and a small hiatus hernia. This is a big relief! I was interested in your comments about bread, cake, etc, as I think they really make my symptoms worse, and I intend to do without them as much as possible from now on. Thank you for your comments.

Olga, DH suffered from this for many years and had a repeat prescription for omeprazole. He was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in March this year and after research went on a low carb diet. The result is normal blood sugar readings, over 30 pounds lost and no acid reflux. He used to eat a lot of bread, potatoes, cakes and pastry all of which have disappeared from his diet except two slices of seeded bread a day.

It could be gastritis/hiatus hernia/ulcer and I know stress plays a big part too. Have it checked and then you can relax. flowers

Olga - like annodomini, Gastroscopy showed hiatus hernia. I take ranitidine, which though not as long lasting as Omeprazole seems to have fewer side effects when taken long term. Bread, pastry etc are the worst culprits for me.

I've been taking omeprazole for at least ten years and had three gastroscopies and a colonoscopy none of which has shown any abnormalities except for a small hiatus hernia. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a cause of your problems too. I find that if I eat too much bread it makes me feel full and sometimes even makes me regurgitate. I also take Gaviscon Advance last thing at night and Ranitidine. All these medications were originally prescribed by an ENT consultant to deal with acid reflux which was damaging my vocal chords. Good luck with your gastroscopy. Be grateful that your GP is thorough.

I have taken omeprazole for about 8 years for severe indigestion. My GP is now worried that the drugs could be masking the cause of the indigestion and I’m to have a gastroscopy on Thursday. Having googled the symptoms, I am now terrified that I’ve got either oesophageal or stomach cancer. Can anyone give me some more cheery possible diagnoses?

Eat healthy green vegetables and avoid High-fat dairy products.

Nfk, when I made that list in reply to Elegran i did think - all that in ten months . We just do what comes along don't we ,

Think I need to set some boundaries . Eat more, relax more for a start

I don't think we sometimes realise how much stress we're under until afterwards. Or how it affects us physically. I had irregular heartbeat and some very funny turns - possibly a small stroke - and couldn't make out why. Then a friend pointed out all the disasters and worry I was having in my life at that time and it all became clear!

I hope your life is more on an even keel now Annie, just realising what's at the bottom of all your problems should help.

I hope you had a better night.

Not told her Elegran, didn't connect them, they were just problems to try and work through .

I will turn the phone off, don't want a repeat of last night It was so distressing .

Proof I am a pea brain

Elegran Fri 20-Oct-17 20:46:43

All that one after the other,. no wonder you are stressed! Have you told your GP about it all? You would probably benefit from a course of stress-busting pills.

It is good advice to turn off your phone at night too, You need uninterrupted sleep.

Elegran, I have looked at my diary, it started when I was moving , so much went wrong and at the same time my daughter was rushed to hospital , this year has been so stressful, the drop in centre closing, my daughter has really played up, and still is, I was upset deciding to resign from my position in the local party , granddaughter waiting for her A level results, my sisters cutting me off, think stressful is the right word.

Need to sort myself out. Thank you yet again Elegran

Elegran Fri 20-Oct-17 19:47:05

Stress is always bad for the digestive system. It increases the amount of acid. I suppose it is part of the "getting ready for flight or fight" reaction, More acid could digest stomach contents faster, the energy from the food would be available sooner and the blood supply could then ignore the digestive tract and concentrate on muscles for running or fighting.

Anniebach Fri 20-Oct-17 18:31:37

Can stress cause it?

Welshwife Fri 20-Oct-17 09:47:54

I am going to try the boiled water option today that some kind person recommended today - had a bad night with reflux.
Has anyone had any luck with taking Cider Apple vinegar in warm water? I have tried it just with the water and also with a small amount of honey in it. I found it extremely difficult to take first thing so sort of chickened out!

JoyBloggs Fri 20-Oct-17 09:11:05

Maggie That's interesting, thank you. I intend to check with my dentist in case I ever need the chewing gum 'remedy' again. I think there are various types and some may be better than others. Don't want to swap one problem for another.

Maggiemaybe Fri 20-Oct-17 08:07:42

My friend’s dentist daughter is always telling her she should chew gum, so there’s another excuse!

NfkDumpling Fri 20-Oct-17 07:13:56

I hope last night was better for you Annie.

My DF added Complan to his diet after a major operation on his doctor's recommendation. But it was as a diet supplement not a replacement. I think it also improved his appetite.

NfkDumpling Fri 20-Oct-17 07:07:05

Love the idea of chewing gum for medical reasons. I shall resume what I had always thought was a bad habit. Thanks!
