Back spasms - should we travel?

We are due to Fly to New Zealand on Wednesday morning. (13 hr flight to Singapore followed by 8 hours to Melbourne where we have a stop-over).My DH, who has never had a back problem in his life, has, for no apparent reason, developed a really bad back. It has been diagnosed by an out of hours nurse yesterday as back spasms. She gave him 4 Diazepam tablets to use on the flight. His own GP hasn't got any appointments today, so we will start the ridiculous ringing at 8am process again tomorrow.

His back seems to completely seize up overnight, but gradually loosens up during the day.
So, I would like to ask:
Has anyone suffered with and travelled with back spasms? How did you manage? Did sitting in the plane make it worse? Did your back seize up?
If anyone has any general advice (e.g. a magic wand to make it go away in the next 24 hrs!!), I would be very grateful.

I too have extremely painful back spasms. Not sure whether or not they are something to do with the fact that I have MS. I’ve had them for between 25 and 30 years, probably once every six months or so. I’ve had holidays ruined because of them. A few months ago I went to see my GP who prescribed Diazepam for me. What a difference they made! I only needed to take four or five tablets. For the first time I felt that I could cope with it.

Bon voyage GrandmaKT! I'm sure the flight will soon be a mere memory and you can concentrate on the real reason for it.

GrandmaKT- I got my first spasm after playing badminton.
I leapt, twisted and ‘did something’. Now I play tennis, different action.
Since then it’s happened quite a few times, it can come on just going upstairs. I think it’s to do with being uneven.
Now I recognise the onset and try and relax. I’ve got quite good at this but have learnt a couple of techniques.
I find lying on my back and pulling my knees up to my chin helps. Not a good look in Tescos but I’ve done it on top of a glacier in Iceland. All that banging into the ice on crampons brought that one on.
I’ve travelled to Australia many times with no problems.
I’d would advise going on seat guru when you have booked your flight and have a look at the seating plan. The last couple of times we flew I managed to book a seat positioned behind the trap door to the hold. It’s in economy but you do have to pay extra.
This means that you wouldn’t have to climb over anyone but him to get to the loo but he can stand in front of his seat and have a lot of leg room.

I suffer with back spasms and all of the above will help. I have a tens machine which is great but take it off before going through security and put it in your hand luggage. You don't want someone thinking your wired with a bomb. I would then reapply in the toilets before boarding the plane. Hope you have a good flight.
