Does anyone know if you can just stop taking statins? I have been on Atorvostatin for just over a year for my cholesterol which was 7. Shortly after I started taking them I started to have quite bad nosebleeds. I have never had a nosebleed in m life, even as a child. Nosebleeds are listed as a possible side effect of my statin. I told my GP this morning (I'm being treated for very high BP). She said nosebleeds will be caused by spikes in BP but I have high BP for 15 years. The first nosebleed I had was in my sleep. It was quite a bad one. Surely your BP goes down when you are asleep not up .Something is telling me it my statin but she didn't listen. Has anyone just stopped taking statins?

one of the things which made me suspicious was the fact that Doctors don't take them. I watched a talk show and the invited doctor didn't even know how high his cholesterin was.
I stopped 3 years ago and told my GP and he just shrugged his shoulders and crossed them out on my card.

With BP it can be more uncomfortable but surely you can buy a wrist BP measurer. They are no longer expensive.

Talking about bp mine was still rather high even on 3 meds but when had the 24hr recording machine the results were a much more acceptable reading.

Nuts are good for reducing the LDL cholesterol. www.nhs.uk/news/food-and-diet/nuts-may-lower-cholesterol/
and beetroot juice may be good for reducing BP levels www.nhs.uk/news/food-and-diet/beetroot-juice-for-blood-pressure/
They certainly won't do you any harm, and might well be worth considering if you are trying to avoid statins.

I take whatever I am prescribed, which includes one Avorastatin daily for the past two years, and have never suffered any ill effects; a pleasing side effect of my statins is that for the first time in my lifetime I have been able to give sweets up for good. That said, both my doctor and the pharmacist questioned me twice in that time about any possible effects, and listened to what I said.
A friend was prescribed statins, and the first one resulted in a bad recurrence of tinnitus; when he notified the GP she immediately checked side effects: tinnitus was rare but possible so she changed the prescription forthwith, with no further ill effects.
It is not wise to stop medication without consulting your GP; most are prepared to prescribe something different if they are causing problems and they usually work.
Another friend frequently self medicates, or rather, fails to continue courses of medicine (for cancer, among other things) because 'they disagree with her'; she then becomes seriously ill some months later.
Not worth the risk.
