I have been looking after my granchild who is just over 1 year old now for 7 months and in all that time his nappies are awful they are yellow in colour and never solid. He has dirty nappies up to 5 times a day and his bottom gets so sore. Just today he has has 3 dirty nappies and he has only been here 3 hours. I have mentioned to his mum and dad that they need to see a doctor about it but neither of them are doing anything, i just dont think its normal and its causing him distress. What do you think?

Are you sure mum and dad haven't seen anyone? It seems odd that they haven't had to go into clinic or have the health visitor round to see them in all this time. If they haven't mentioned it at the sessions then suggest that they do. Do this gently so they don't think you are being pushy and ignore you.
Sudacreme is brilliant for sore botties and sore anything else.

I also think he should be checked by a doctor but in the meantime I’d try the egg white. Another very good cream which worked wonders for my dgd when she had rotavirus is Bepanthen. You should be able to buy it in any pharmacy/supermarket

My GS had much the same problem and we discovered it to be a lactose intolerance. Came off breast milk given some drops to take before having lactose free formula and now has lactose free milk. Problem solved for us. Good luck and hopefully your answer will be as simple as ours.

Taste his skin. If it tastes salty it could be Cystic Fibrosis. I was very anxious about my grandsons frequent dirty nappies which were soft and oily. My daughter who was a first time Mum said it was fine. Fortunately the heel test they did in the hospital detected Cystic Fibrosis. He was then put on an enzyme which helps him digest the fats in his food. So far, he’s 8 now, and is a very active normal little boy. He gets short sessions of physio twice a day and swims a lot, cycles with his daddy for 12 miles and has climbed almost every hill that surrounds our city. The early diagnosis was extremely helpful. It may be something else altogether but he will not thrive losing all the fats, vitamins and proteins so often in a day. A doctors visit would be well worth it if only for peace of mind.

If both parents are at work, perhaps it's just a problem they have with getting time off to take him? Could you offer to take him to the doctors for them? Seems a possible answer if it's not too difficult for you. Good luck and I hope there's nothing wrong with the child.

Doesn't nappy content depend on what kids eat? I know my granddaughter's nappies do, but she's older.

GabriellaG54 Thu 04-Apr-19 13:21:54

Bopeep14
It's normal.
More common in boys.
Use Sudocrem on his clean dry bottom but don't slather it on. Use just enough for you to be able to gently smooth it all in.
I can't link the article but here's a screenshot and you'll be able to find it online.
It will pass.

Its very unlikely that mum and dad havent seen anyone. Health visitors usually weigh with nappies off and ask about nappy content.

Get that child to a doctor ASAP! Preferably without offending his parents, but that is a risk you really will have to take.

If his bottom is really sore, which I bet it is, take his nappy off when he is having a nap. Lay him on a layer of clean soft towels with newspaper under, and as boys have a long range lay a clean nappy over him.

Here in Denmark, small pieces of lint bandage used to be dipped in cold, boiled water and put on the sore places on a baby's bottom before the nappy went on to alleviate the discomfort of a nappy rash.

The yellow motions may be normal for this child, but unless a doctor examines him, you will continue to worry, and the nappy rash is a problem too.

I would be worried too, that all these dirty nappies might lead to an infection of the urinary tract or to an adhesion of the foreskin.

Is he still breast fed? Breast fed babies often have this sort of nappies!

sharon103 Thu 04-Apr-19 14:01:08

agree with olliesgran, a babies stool is yellow if breastfed or it could be the formula milk he's drinking. It's wise to see a doctor as he could have an infection maybe or food intolerance. If it's quite loose make sure he drinks water to keep him hydrated.

Well I never. It's actually a thing. Gabriella's right. www.nnuh.nhs.uk/publication/download/dietary-management-of-toddler-diarrhoea-10-1-9/

Would still the doc though. They might be able to prescribe a cream for his bottom.

luluaugust Thu 04-Apr-19 14:37:32

Agree with all those saying yes to a visit to the Docs, how about the very old fashioned and cheap Zinc and Caster oil for his bot?

Gonegirl Thu 04-Apr-19 14:40:24

Yes! That was always good.

Gonegirl Thu 04-Apr-19 14:40:50

Loved the smell of that too.

Gonegirl Thu 04-Apr-19 14:41:22

Oh, I want those little baby bums back. Sigh.

Caro57 Thu 04-Apr-19 17:06:50

If his mum can take him to an OOH clinic because his bottom is so sore - why on earth can’t she / they get his gut checked out? It really does sound as though he should be seen,if nothing else to eliminate some conditions, rather than leave him to have a, potential, life long problem get established

willa45 Thu 04-Apr-19 17:12:06

Baby should be seen by pediatrician asap. Could be an illness, his diet or some kind of intolerance.

re: sore bottom.....Here in the US there's something very effective called 'Butt paste'. Don't know if it goes by any other name elsewhere, but it comes in a tube and has vitamin D, zinc and perhaps something else.

Poor little guy....I do hope you can find the best solution.

Here's some information and advice from Mumsnet:
www.mumsnet.com/babies/baby-poo-whats-normal
I haven't read it so don't know how much has already been said on here.

Fennel Thu 04-Apr-19 17:38:55

ps Plenty of lovely baby pictures on there, Gonegirl smile.

Gonegirl Thu 04-Apr-19 17:49:07

There are indeed Fennel. Brings it all back eh? ?

Coolgran65 Thu 04-Apr-19 18:53:57

Those nappies just aren't right.

Our dgc have all used this Metanium Cream and it worked very quickly. I put it on after every nappy change.

This is what we use and found it excellent.

Of course, the cause needs investigated. Poor wee soul.

Dragon04 Thu 04-Apr-19 22:28:34

I can vouch for egg white too.

Esspee Fri 05-Apr-19 06:31:24

Just checking back to find out what the OP has done for the child.
OP, we care enough to give you advice. Please do us the courtesy of getting back to us.

Grammaretto Fri 05-Apr-19 07:13:10

Do you not have health visitors anymore?
If not then definitely see the doctor.
