Gastritis

I have had gastritis, I had to be very careful what I ate. I lost weight but wasn’t sure if it was the gastritis or what I was eating! Bland is the way to go I’m afraid, though chocolate tea and coffee also had to be avoided. Apple juice diluted I warm water helped. It does improve!

Thank you midget , I find tea gives me discomfort under my ribs ,does that sound right and is there a cure for gastritis

I had my gallbladder removed a couple of months ago. Was assuming that would solve the problem and end the pain etc and wasn’t warned about diet post op or anything else for that matter. Sorry you have problems ooey hope it gets sorted out.

I was diagnosed with gastritis following a gastroscopy (or endoscopy) a few years ago. I take omeprazole although not as often as I used too. I get pain under my left ribs sometimes and have upper wind ( sorry not a pleasant topic.).
I find diet is really important, bland and boring 90% of the time. I take a risk now and again to eat something like pizza.

I stopped tea and coffee and started drinking rooibos tea which seems to help. (Its nice just drink like normal tea with milk.) I also keep a tin of Rich tea biscuits on the bedside drawers. It sounds odd but they help.
But I do think you should ask for advice and information from your consultant as everyone is not necessarily the same. Hope everything goes well for you.

Thankyou all for the feed back . I also get the pain under my left rib with tea .. I don’t mind bland but my appetite has almost gone and the condition is causing me to suffer terrible anxiety ,.I think only people who have experienced this understand how bad it is I am looking forward to the gastroscopy in the hope it gives me an answer ,

I too have gastritis and take lansoprazole.

I also have a weird and rare syndrome that afflicts some people who have had their gallbladders removed. It is called SOD! - Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction. This is a duct/valve in the biliary system which goes into spasm and causes acute dreadful pain - I have been rendered unconscious by it on several occasions. Bizarrely it can also be triggered by taking opiates, including codeine - causes a few problems after surgery!

If I had known that this would ensue after gall bladder removal........but it had to be done.

Luckygirl you have my sympathy - I too have SOD mine was triggered by taking opiates in an empty stomach. This occurred about two years after gall bladder removal. I have never felt pain like it but fortunately have only had three episodes I too have passed out. I never take any painkillers as I am terrified of having to endure another attack. Try to keep to a bland diet with no alcohol or fatty foods

chloe1984 - interesting to "meet" a fellow SOD! - but I am sorry you too have this. I think "never felt pain like it" about sums it up! I had problems after hip surgery as I could only take paracetamol, which did not fit the bill at all; and I now have problems with knee and other hip so I am dreading them saying they need surgery.

Ooeyisit - sorry to hijack your thread - for me eating little fat and watching my diet carefully is a way of life - you do get used to it. I hope your investigation goes well.

I had to have my gall bladder removed some years ago and for quite some while afterwards anything and everything I ate gave me a jippy stomach, sometimes with a need to get to the loo pronto! I had been in a very restricted diet before the op, (no fat, dairy or alcohol). I found each time I reintroduced previously banned foods, my system rebelled, but by gradually re-introducing foods everything eventually settled down. I'm sorry I can't give you a timescale on this (too many years back now), but I'm hoping this might be what's causing your problems, in which case things do improve with time.

I have gastritis and tea was the first thing that started causing pain. Plus lots of 'gas' . I used to enjoy a really strong cuppa. Finally I had blood in my faeces which really frightened me.
Now it's most things, even milky things like caramel custards.
18 months ago I had tests, endoscopy etc, and was diagnosed with a small duodenal ulcer and chronic gastritis. I had blood transfusions and a one month's course of Lansoprazole which helped for a while but now it's back .

I’ve had so much trouble since I had mine removed. A few days after the op I went yellow and had the worst pain of my life. My common bile duct had been severed and I had four days on morphine with a stomach drain before a stent was put in. The stent blocked and I went into liver failure. Even now, eight years on, I get terrible pain in the bile duct area, rolling round the floor in agony. I fully sympathise with anyone who has on-going problems.

I had my gall bladder removed 50 years ago at the age of 25 and it was considered a major operation then. Two weeks after I was discharged from hospital was I was doubled over in pain again. Went to see my surgeon who said these "attacks" can go on for up to two years. They did gradually subside and he says it's because you body needs to settle down again after the gall bladder has been removed. I have never had to watch what I eat since it stopped.

Interesting to read all these problems as I have Gastritis but mine was caused by taken full dosage of Ibuprrofen for 2 weeks on GP's orders. I take Ranitadine twice a day otherwise I lose my appetite & can't bear the smell of food

I still have my Gall Bladder although I have some small stones but they aren't bothering me. I can eat most things but milk chocolate is inclined to give me a "gippy" tummy, good job I prefer good quality dark chocolate

Following my gallbladder removal I still had the same symptoms. I ended up having 3 follow-on gastroscapies until they found all the tiny bits of grit/shale left behind after my gall bladder was removed. All was fine then but it really is best to avoid spicy or fatty foods. Bland unfortunately is the answer.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is a similar thing but after I had my gallbladder out two years ago I developed bowel problems (running to the loo up to 10 times a day!). My gp sent me to a consultant who said I had "bile salt malabsorbtion" and recomended I take Questran powders in water once a day.
It does seem to have just about cured it. Unfortunatly I will probably have to take it for ever! Good luck.

The thing is I am careful, of what I eat ,. I had another gall attack after the op and they thought a stone may have been retained . After a scan it showed no stone .i am awaiting the gastroscopy on the 4th June . In the meantime I have had a blood test for gluten intolerance. Some days I am now well but ok .other days I feel like I am dying .its not pain just a horrible feeling ..I am baffled and I am increasingly depressed over it and am crying a lot .

Hi. Sympathy. Bland is best bananas. Apple sauce. Stewed apples and toast with just a scrape of butter. And honey if liked. Hope they sort you out soon. N

Lansoprazole is the only thing helps me. I'm a daily taker and have been for years. I had my gall bladder removed last year, not due to stones but a defunct valve resulting in liver problems as I had to wait for a year before it was removed.
I know it's difficult but stress and anxiety really will exacerbate symptoms. Try to rest and relax as much as you can. Bland is in afraid the only way, water and toast were all I had for that year, though if I'm honest it was mostly water and then that came back.
I was given a sedative each time I had the procedure. I hope you are given one too.

how long is it since you had your gall bladder removed? mine is 2 months now ,and like you after about one small portion of food i am full..i get a horrible sensation in my stomach too. you just have to let your body adjust and cut as much fat as you can from your food.i too have lost weight ..started to scare me. but its because your body is adjusting to life without a gall bladder .instead of the gall bile going through the bladder it now drips on to your liver(yuk yes i know). there are certain food i cannot eat anyway. such as eggs/dairy produce/oinions/spicy food/. but i can now eat oranges/apples (yummy...)i eat a lot more fruit and more fibre....you have to balance what you eat...i also have a hernia/stricture of the throat/fatty liver/2 cysts on right kidney /slipped disc/and two fractured skulls/balance problems/deafness/..... but i am still here (just). when you have a camera down your throat asked to be knocked out .the spray to your throat leaves problems....bland food is good.fish without the batter/salmon/mackeral/potatoes.vegatables .toast/crackers.plain food....

When I had a gastroscopy they asked me if I would like to join a trial of entonox instead of being knocked right out. I agreed - in for a penny and all that - and I was told to take 7 big inhalations of the entonox and they then put the tube down - it was OK - not what you would choose to be doing - but definitely OK. And I was able to drive home afterwards as the entonox wears off very quickly.
