Caught a cold, going to have a duvet day, would be grateful for kindle book recommendations.
Not a fan of romances but open to anything else.

Glad to hear so many loved the Salt Path I have just bought it but havent started it yet,I am looking forward to it.

Jane10 Fri 27-Sept-19 15:32:24

Jane Gardam is a wonderful writer. I loved 'Old Filth' and its sequels. Some writers can just do it!

Where the Crawdads sing .... Delia Owens

The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths - first book in the Ruth Galloway series. They are great books with archaeological and police mysteries, thrillers.

I have a cold too, and am reading Transcription by Kate Atkinson, in my view the best female writer in the UK ( although Pat Barker is a close contender.)Nothing nicer than being in a comfy chair with a good book.

Jane10 Fri 27-Sept-19 16:36:00

Ooh yes. Kate Atkinson is a wonderful writer too. My favourite of hers us 'A God in Ruins'. (No idea what the title means!) However, it's a literary tour de force. She needn't have written another word after that but, luckily, she did!

Musicgirl Fri 27-Sept-19 17:08:27

The Keeper of Lost Things and The Music Shop are two easy to read feel-good books perfect for a duvet day.

Jacquetta Fri 27-Sept-19 17:48:37

Anything by Terry Pratchett .ANYTHING.!!

Megs36 Fri 27-Sept-19 18:51:51

Joanna Nell, now 2nd book released, excellent reads.

Skinnylizzie Fri 27-Sept-19 19:00:58

Just read A River Runs Through it..... cant remember the author but it was an enjoyable light read - not a romance

When you're over your lurgy, I recommend reading "The Infection Game" by Dr Sarah Myhill. Following the advice in that book I haven't had a cold, flu, stomach bug, or anything-else for over 2 years. Hope you feel well soon x

maryhoffman37 Fri 27-Sept-19 20:13:12

In my book group we all loved A Geentleman in Moscow by Amor `Towles. And another vote for The Goldfinch here.

Sparklefizz Fri 27-Sept-19 20:14:29

"Need to Know" by Karen Cleveland - gripping -couldn't put it down. Feel lost now I've finished it!

Sparklefizz Fri 27-Sept-19 20:15:31

....and anything by Lissa Evans -

LondonGranny Fri 27-Sept-19 20:28:52

If you like good readable non-fiction then anything by Liza Picard. She's still going and in her nineties. She's a retired lawyer (so good at research) but writes vividly and without assuming you have reams of historical knowledge. There's Johnson's London, Chaucer's People and several more besides.

cassandra264 Fri 27-Sept-19 21:31:01

Not sure if these are on Kindle - but recommend Madeline Miller's 'Achilles' (Orange Prize for Fiction 2012) and 'Circe' (shortlisted for Women's Prize for Fiction 2018). If you like legends and believable characters these are well worth your time.

Nergard Fri 27-Sept-19 21:32:51

The woman in cabin ten by Ruth Ware. Mystery book couldn't put it down, just had to read to the end.

glammagran Fri 27-Sept-19 22:15:05

Pillars of the Earth as another poster suggested

TLVgran48 Sat 28-Sept-19 12:34:11

Gallusquine, I've just finished (on Kindle) The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, a glorious read. Feel better soon!

Evie64 Sat 28-Sept-19 13:03:15

The cold cold sea - couldn't put it down. Also, Am I guilty? Another page turner with a thrilling end.

madcatwoman Sat 28-Sept-19 15:44:10

Achilles is a wonderful book. Gave me hours of enjoyment! Problem is, when you finish something wonderful, there's this big void … what on earth can I read next that is good as that one?
