“ Health bosses speculate that the virus will continue to spread in the UK until it peaks in the summer, later than the previous assumption that it would peter out in the late spring. A source said: “We are planning that we are into this for the next few months.”.”

Taken from today’s newspapers. I really don’t see how this cannot spread to epidemic proportions in the UK when we are still allowing flights from China and a passenger from one of these has tested positive one for the virus in London.

Nothing we can do but wait helplessly.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 11:24:47

guilia I can’t find anything saying that - you do mean death rate don’t you and not number of deaths?

JenniferEccles Thu 27-Feb-20 11:29:48

But I am puzzled as to what else you think the government should be doing pinkquartz ?

What have I said that is callous?
I can understand why some are worried.

I guess I am in a high risk group as I am over 60 but I still maintain that it’s important to keep a sense of perspective about what is a relatively mild illness.

Of course no one knows how things will develop and the situation may change for the worse, but in the meantime most folk are going about their lives as normal which is important.

It will help no one if there is widespread panic with supermarket shelves being stripped for instance.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 11:37:36

The mortality figures we have at the moment ( and of course there are caveats) related to age are 60-69 3.6%, 79-79 ( 8%) 80+ 14.8% against an overall rate of 2.1%. Many of us on GN as well as being over 70 have other risks factors as well. We have every right to expect more information from this Government

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 11:39:57

And will people stop saying it’s a relatively mild disease FFS - it depends on your risk factors.

travelsafar Thu 27-Feb-20 11:43:34

Just a thought, but could this virus be transfered if you buy products from China? My DH purchases items on ebay and many things come from China. I am a little concerned especially as he has COPD.

Urmstongran Thu 27-Feb-20 11:48:52

In the Telegraph today:

A ‘corona-prepper’ ...
“In the end, it took three hours to order 150 cans. If you think a weekly shop is faffy, imagine you’re prepping for Armaggedon in unknown, tinned-food territory. The bright side is at least it’s cheap – a necessity, given that I ordered 45 cans of meat, 25 cans of fruit, 50 cans of vegetables, 17 tins and packets of beans and chickpeas, 15 bags of rice, eight bags of porridge, five jars of honey, five bottles of anti-bac liquid soap (hand gel was out of stock), a large table salt, giant box of laundry detergent, giant pack of loo roll. It came to £136.85 – 175 items for a next-day delivery (no time to waste).
I didn’t feel like I was overreacting.”

I did.

Its a bit of a minefield - lots of people have fluey type viruses at the moment, I have a cough and sore throat which I think I caught from one of the GC who seems to catch every bug going. Of course I'm worried it might be this flu - should I stay at home the whole time even though I don't feel too bad? I cover my mouth with a scarf when out and do use tissues, hand washing etc. but maybe I should get tested, call 111, self isolate ? Of course, whatever the bug I know I shouldn't spread my germs around and have cancelled a couple of planned activities, anyone else in the same boat?

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 11:53:30

travel this is from the NHS website and I’ve seen it repeated elsewhere

How coronavirus is spread

Because it's a new illness, we do not know exactly how coronavirus spreads from person to person.

Similar viruses are spread in cough droplets.

It's very unlikely it can be spread through things like packages or food. Viruses like coronavirus cannot live outside the body for very long.

Daisymae Thu 27-Feb-20 11:53:48

Well it will keep if the author was overreacting. My Brexit box has become my virus box.wink

JenniferEccles Thu 27-Feb-20 11:54:44

So this was in the Telegraph.

How many hundreds of thousands of people will read that and do the same?

Can they not see that that’s exactly the way to cause food shortage for the rest of us?

I’m alright Jack eh?

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 11:57:26

Well I don’t read the Telegraph obvs. The Guardian will be likely to have articles on how to make do with what you normally have in and remind you to check on vulnerable neighbours ?

Urmstongran Thu 27-Feb-20 12:00:54

Agree JE and sw.
?

Seems a stupid idea. It will create shortages. But the writer said it was all over FB (which I don’t do) so it’s likely to become a thing - well, with some people.
?

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 12:13:18

I’m coming back to the point I made earlier a out death rates and deaths. I think it’s really important for us to be as accurate as we can be on here. My understanding is that the number of cases of the virus in China is falling. You would therefore expect the number of deaths to fall. The death rate is however the proportion of deaths related to number of cases of infection. I can’t find anything that says the death rate is falling.

Urmstongran Thu 27-Feb-20 12:29:09

A good point sw.

However good news if the number of new cases in China is falling.

pinkquartz Thu 27-Feb-20 12:38:53

JenniferEccles I did answer your question already about what I think the Govt could be doing.

Perhaps I thought callous because you seem dismissive...you are not at high risk being over 60 though.
I have a weak immune system and 2 respiratory illnesses. I have enough trouble recovering from a cold virus therefore I am scared.
There are many other people who also already have respiratory conditions and weak or compromised immune systems. Those are the people who won't be able to shake it off so easily.

tickingbird Thu 27-Feb-20 12:41:47

suziewoozie And will people stop saying it’s a relatively mild disease FFS - it depends on your risk factors.

For crying out loud any disease can be fatal depending on your risk factors! For the majority of people it is relatively mild. For those with underlying health problems (myself included on two fronts) it could be horrendous. There is also the fact that some react badly and seem to have a far worse illness than others, even though they don’t have underlying health problems.

Stop dictating to everyone and constantly putting yourself forward as some kind of expert. Maybe you need to triangulate more!

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 12:43:35

Absolutely Urm but the difference is so important. If the death rate had really fallen, we would need to know why eg the virus had mutated to be less serious or a new more successful treatment had been introduced

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 12:45:38

FFS * tickingbird*.Your post is just beyond ridiculous.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 12:50:29

And I at least am expert enough to know the importance difference between death rate and number of deaths ticking?

tickingbird Thu 27-Feb-20 12:52:23

No you aren’t. You only think you are. Big difference.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 12:59:58

tickingbird I am 100% right on what I posted about death rates. You’ve had at least two posts deleted for personally abusing me and your posts appear to be getting increasingly personal again. You tried to goad me on the DA thread but I walked away. I won’t leave this thread because truth and facts matter. Do goad away with inaccurate and personal posts - it’s not me who looks the idiot.

Urmstongran Thu 27-Feb-20 13:01:41

I’m with you sw on this.

Why do you disagree tickingbird could you explain?

The Pope is poorly today.
Yesterday he met coronovirus sufferers.

travelsafar Thu 27-Feb-20 13:12:55

Thanks suziewoozie will check out the NHS site. smile

giulia Thu 27-Feb-20 13:42:26

susiewoozie Yes, sorry. I DO mean death rate. I forgot to say I am referring to the national news here in Italy.

giulia Thu 27-Feb-20 13:51:23

It might be reassuring to know that the major Italian hospital for infectious diseases (Spallanzani) say they are curing the seriously ill Chinese couple by using the same medications previously used for Ebola and HIV.

This couple were in intensive care here for over two weeks. The man is now totally cured and the wife is out of intensive care, almost cured.
