“ Health bosses speculate that the virus will continue to spread in the UK until it peaks in the summer, later than the previous assumption that it would peter out in the late spring. A source said: “We are planning that we are into this for the next few months.”.”

Taken from today’s newspapers. I really don’t see how this cannot spread to epidemic proportions in the UK when we are still allowing flights from China and a passenger from one of these has tested positive one for the virus in London.

Nothing we can do but wait helplessly.

DD 3 has a nasty chest infection very doubtful that it’s anything to do with this virus! DGS1 has had a nasty cold and been left with a cough, he’s been teased at school by other 9 year olds saying he has Coronavirus??‍♀️
Personally I am just carrying on business as usual just as I do whatever the latest health out break is, I take sensible hand washing precautions anyway and apart from that don’t see there is anything else I could reasonably do. If I get the virus I get the virus.

vegansrock COVID-19 is not influenza (flu).

tickingbird Thu 27-Feb-20 15:06:11

I disagree because the amount of deaths have stalled drastically. Whereas the figures were increasing by up to a hundred per day, there has only been a very small increase in the last few days.

As for you sw you are regularly condescending to other posters and sneer at their posts usually in the form of ‘yawn’ or a line of crying with laughter emojis.

As for my post regarding death rates you’re using semantics to try and sneer as per usual. You post that others HAVE to stop saying it’s a mild illness. It mostly is. I have seen and heard many EXPERTS saying just that on the news. You use FFS which is your normal profanity. You wouldn’t say that if one of these experts were to have a conversation with you about it. As for deleted posts you’re way ahead of me on that score. I wonder how many posts would be deleted if you stop reporting for a week or two? You posted that my quite rational post was beyond ridiculous??? If you can’t take anyone coming back at you then stop dishing it out!!

@ Giulia *
susiewoozie Yes, sorry. I DO mean death rate. I forgot to say I am referring to the national news here in Italy.*

Thank you giulia.

Missfoodlove Thu 27-Feb-20 15:31:35

On a lighter note my husband who rarely visits a supermarket has come home with 48 toilet rolls and numerous tins of beans and tuna.
We only have beans probably 3/4 times a year and tuna possibly a tin a month!

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 16:04:21

guilia in statistical terms, the number of cases in Italy is very small and so the death rate ( cases divided by deaths) was, not surprisingly, high compared with China. This can happen when figures are small and as the numbers of overall cases and deaths increase, the death rate is likely to decrease as numbers even out. The latest figures I’ve seen for Italy today are 527 cases and 14 deaths which gives a death rate of 2.65%. The previous figures were 400 and 12 thus a death rate of 3%. But the conclusion from this is not that the death rate is going down but that as the number of cases increases, the death rate will regress. If it’s being reported that the death rate is decreasing, then it’s not really the case in any meaningful sense. In China the situation is different because the numbers are so large. The death rate in China is reported as over 3%. In terms of what’s happening what’s good news, is that less new cases are being reported. There is no evidence that the death rate has shifted in any meaningful sense other than the daily statistical fluctuations you would expect to see.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 16:10:04

Just as an illustration here in UK - we have 15 confirmed cases. No deaths so a death rate of 0% - this is meaningless as the figures of cases are so small. If someone died today, the death rate would jump to 6.66%. This is equally meaningless.

Even if he hasn't got Coronavirus, was this not a little irresponsible of the pop?

Daisymae Thu 27-Feb-20 16:24:58

The obvious reason for the fact that there have been no fatalities in the UK is because people who have been diagnosed have received excellent appropriate treatment. The same level of care will be impossible if the numbers run into 10s let alone 00s. Let's just hope that the powers that be have sufficient planning in place to minimise the risk. Apparently this type of scenario has been forecast for years so they have had plenty of time for emergency planning.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 16:29:41

That’s one reason Daisy but we don’t know the risk profile of the people infected. There have been deaths in countries with health care systems as good as ours I’m sure. The real test will be in numbers of cases significantly increase.

Yehbutnobut Thu 27-Feb-20 16:30:56

Daisy you could say exactly the same about flooding - and look at that!

The Blesséd Boris is the worst possible PM we could have at this time.

pinkquartz Thu 27-Feb-20 16:35:50

In Iran the death numbers are in a high ratio to the infected numbers.I doubt many countries are being 100% truthful.

Once the Virus reaches vulnerable people in the UK the deaths will soar because all the hospitals are already overfull.

So far it has infected people who were well enough to travel.
At some point it will jump to a person with underlying conditions and then things get scary.

Has the football match with Italy been cancelled yet.
Ireland have cancelled their rugby football match to stop the virus getting to Dublin. which seems very sensible.
Unlike our bunch of inept w*****

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 16:39:34

pink I agree the Iran figures cannot be accurate - either concealing cases or failure to diagnose. I’ve no idea what their health care system is like.

Yehbutnobut Thu 27-Feb-20 16:41:46

Logically pink you are correct. A&E cannot cope even without hundreds of virus sufferers, many old and frail, adding to an already stretched system.

So only those who are seriously ill will be admitted and there will be neither the beds nor the nurses available to give them the help they need. People will be turned away to die at home. That is what happened in China.

GillT57 Thu 27-Feb-20 16:55:37

I think we can safely assume that the reports from Iran are not factually correct. Apart from politics coming into it, there is also the fact of years of sanctions from the West, made worse lately by Trump, sanctions which, as always, hurt the poor. Their medicines and medical care for other than those senior people we see and hear is likely very poor.

pinkquartz Thu 27-Feb-20 16:59:03

Yehbutnobut
it is a very sad thought isn't it. I don't want it to happen and I don't usually get anxiety about modern "plagues", like SARS or Mers but this one has me concerned.

suziewoozie I hope that it doesn't get into Iran's prison system, am thinking of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.

I counted my handwashing time today and twenty seconds is actually quite a long time!
I am always careful though because I am prone to catching "everything going" and even with care I still catch viruses.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 17:00:48

And Yeh if it gets serious, Hospital and community health professionals will be affected . I’m sure we’re all hoping we manage to contain it. I’m still not really worried or panicking but remain concerned.

Sparklefizz Thu 27-Feb-20 17:05:10

A friend has just sent this to me. She did not get it from a newspaper. I can't verify it but thought I would pass it on in case it's helpful.

The new NCP coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days, how can one know / check if there is an infection? By the time there’s fever and symptoms start appearing and one goes to Dr/hospital, by then in most cases the lungs may have 50% fibrosis and it's too late and dangerous.

Taiwan experts provide a simple self-checking that we can do all every morning:

Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stuffiness or tightness etc it proves there is no fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicating no infection.
Ask your kids to do this test and request the schools to do the same.
Fibrosis is a type of lung disease. It is caused by lung tissue becoming thick and stiff and eventually forming scar tissue within the lungs. The scarring, or fibrosis, seems to result from a cycle of damage and healing that occurs in the lungs.

In critical times, please self-check every morning in an environment with clean air!”

“Another piece of advise by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases. Everyone should ensure your mouth & throat is moist, never DRY.
Take a few sips of water every 15 mins at least. WHY? Even if the virus gets into your mouth...drinking water or other liquids will WASH them down through your oesophagus and into the stomach. Once there in tummy...your stomach ACID will kill all the virus. If you don't drink enough water more regularly...the virus can enter your windpipes and into the LUNGS.”

tickingbird Thu 27-Feb-20 17:09:50

I heard an expert saying you should wash your hands for two rounds of Happy Birthday.

Sparklefizz Thu 27-Feb-20 17:14:55

Yes, I heard that too tickingbird. It's actually quite a long time.

JenniferEccles Thu 27-Feb-20 17:39:17

That’s interesting information Sparklefizz
Thank you for that.
I should be ok regarding keeping my mouth and throat moist as I drink water regularly throughout the day !

tickingbird Thu 27-Feb-20 17:55:30

A case diagnosed a few miles from me and someone else much nearer being tested. It does scare me as I have a real phobia about not being able to breathe and have an underlying problem with my lungs.

lemongrove Thu 27-Feb-20 18:34:46

Thousands must die each year in the UK from flu and flu related illnesses such as pneumonia, mainly the older people but very young or otherwise vulnerable too.
Let’s not panic about corona virus.

EllanVannin Thu 27-Feb-20 18:44:49

I'm hoping whatever I had over Christmas and the best part of January will give me at least some immunity should it strike where I am.
Whatever it was I wouldn't have wished it on my worst enemy. My step-D will vouch because she too had it and has only recently had a chest x-ray to make sure there was no lasting damage. She's now got vertigo.

I'm so glad that my D and SiL were here last year from Oz and not booked for this year.

suziewoozie Thu 27-Feb-20 18:45:23

Yes lemon the figures vary enormously each year. The death rate is much lower than for Coronavirus. I think on this thread there are concerned people not panickers. Some of us are wanting to get ahead of the game in our thinking because we don’t trust the Government further than we can throw them. MH couldn’t even give accurate advice about sick pay.
