Drinking a glass of water that has stood bedside overnight

I was always told as a child (a long time ago) not to drink a glass of water that has stood bedside overnight. At my ripe old age now, I invariably do. I have 'googled' and found lots of reasons why it might not taste fresh or even be slightly off; but has anyone in the UK, or place of similar climate, ever been made ill by drinking this 'stale' water? I haven't and was wondering whether anyone else has.

I take a bottle of water to bed because I take my tablets then. If I don't drink it I put it back in the fridge to use later.

I always take a drink of water to bed as about once a week I dream I am choking and coughing ( asked the Dr about it once and she said it could be nasel drip ug)so wake up gasping for a drink to stop me coughing!

I often take a glass of coke to bed and drink it over several nights, flat and warm

Oh welbeck I just love you insulted cup, I am sure you mean insulated but it did give me a laugh ?

I take a bottle of water, screw cap, safe from crawlies and in case I knock it off. I do get thirsty in the night. If I don’t drink it, it goes in the kettle.

I have to have water at the side of the bed, I seem to have developed a dry mouth, (maybe I sleep with my mouth open) ??
I now have a water bottle, as I caught the cat drinking out of my glass.

I dont usualy have water by my bed at home, but always do when away from home, if I need water in the night I then dont have to find my way in a sytange house, I always have a bottle of water for these occasions, it last for ages,so convenient.

I have water by my bedside every night and often finish it off with my pills in the morning. It has never crossed my mind to cover it. Too late to worry now I suppose.

I now use a flask after finding a drowned moth in mine one morning shock
It also keeps my water cold and if I knock it over there’s no mess!

I have a pint glass of water by my bed; meds last thing at night, sometimes during the night and always in the morning . And sometimes wake up just plain thirsty ! I know when I’ve had a good night if the glass is still nearly full when I wake up . Downside of a pint is that it doesn’t half make a mess if I knock it over.....
Before anyone says the sensible thing would be to have a bottle , it’s the unscrewing of cap ( in the dark , trying not to wake OH ) that would be problematic!

SueDonim, just read the mumsnet link you posted -excellently funny, just what I needed to cheer me up on this cold, wet and dreary afternoon !

Having found a spider in my glass on more than one occasion, if I need a drink in bed I take a bottle of water ?

My hubby and I take (refillable) bottles of water to bed with us. Both of us have various medications to take before bed/at bedtime, and are often thirsty in the night. We do wash the tops of the bottles regularly, and drink filtered tap water often at different times of day.

I used to take a glass of water to bed but more often than not I found my cat drinking from it or doing the aforementioned paw dip!
I now take a litre bottle to bed and it's always gone by morning. I'm a thirty sleeper.
The cat has his own dish upstairs now so he doesn't feel left out.
I do worry that bugs etc will get in a glass and in a half asleep state I'm not sure I would notice ?
As for stale it's less likely to be stale in a sealed bottle.

Haha... I'm wondering why you have an 'insulted' cup? What did you say to it?

Baloothefitz Wed 19-Feb-20 17:36:20

I drink a whole jug of water during the night ,I'm always so thirsty ,not diabetic

suelld Wed 19-Feb-20 18:17:06

I take tablets at night and tablets in the morning, I'm 74, I also have Sleep Apnoea and sleep with a mask - I also have kidney issues and am diabetic - apart from all that and more I'm fine !
I used to always take a glass of water to my bedside, but over the last decade I use a 500g closed 'pop' bottle, (sterilised every now and then with Milton tablets) with fresh water, having spilt the water in a glass more times than I care to remember. I find that the bottle is great and it's nearly empty by the time I'm dressed... Why buy one of these expensive 'water bottles'.

I always take a glass of water to bed nd haven’t had any problems apart from knocking it over!

MiniDriver56 Wed 19-Feb-20 18:49:49

I can tell the difference in a cup of coffee if the water had been re-boiled in a kettle. My DH says it’s not possible! However, I haven’t failed yet! My children know I can and he now believes it!

welbeck Wed 19-Feb-20 18:50:08

my insulted cup is the poundland red one with handle which i discovered the lid did not fit quite tight; now it's sulking and i can't find it.
come out, come out wherever you are, i didn't mean it, you can still be jolly useful; truce ?

Caro57 Wed 19-Feb-20 19:00:35

Have a mug with a lid - stops the cats drinking it! - by the bed but rarely drink it. I then use it for my vitamins etc. in the morning........ am still alive!

Helennonotion Wed 19-Feb-20 19:07:17

Oh me too MiniDriver56 I don't know how others can't taste it! It's revolting. I can also tell when milk is on the turn before anyone else. Maybe I should've been a wine taster.grin Thanks SueDonim for reminding me of that thread! Still makes me laugh so much. MN at its best! Getting back on track I don't think I've ever taken water to bed, but if I ever do I'll know all the dos and don'ts!

Fennel Wed 19-Feb-20 19:49:13

I'm another one who needs to take tablets during the night . So I have a glass of water next to my bed.
There's a strange belief in our religion that water should be covered if leaving for any length of time.
Maybe they knew about cats in those days too!
