The secret to a good nights sleep....

For about 10 years a good nights sleep has been a rare pleasure.
I’ve tried OTC tablets, meditation, diet and pillow sprays with varying results.
Finally I think I’ve found the solution in a tea bag!
It’s a well known organic brand that has a night time tea.
I’m sleeping like a log.....just hoping it lasts.
Has anyone else discovered this little bag of magic?

As a lifetime insomniac I’ve just started on the NHS Sleepstation programme. Lots of tips, resources , personalised support etc.

A small glass of half and half pale cream sherry and white wine works well.

It's fabulous that op has found something that works for her.
But I'm astounded at all the posters who believe that it is a sleep panacea!

Not a panacea - just something that may make it easier to sleep more soundly/a bit longer. I doubt tea is going to have much effect on people who are in pain/have serious anxiety problems/don't have a nice warm, comfy bed, but if used alongside other methods it gives some people even an extra hour of sleep what's the problem? It's obviously given the OP some comfort, so may help someone else too.

I wish I'd seen that documentary years ago. What your explaining is what I paid money to learn from a sleep therapis. It's brain training. It works for me.

Thanks for the recommendation Missfoodlove. I found some in Asda today £2.50 for a box of 20. I’m looking forward to trying it. I’ll buy a bigger quantity if it goes well ?

Maggiemaybe Mon 18-Jan-21 23:26:47

Well I’m happy to try it, and have added a box to tomorrow’s grocery delivery. smile I like herbal teas anyway, so it won’t go to waste.

I have no problem at all getting to sleep and usually have around 7 hours. But I’m waking up constantly during the night these days. I get back off in minutes, but my MiFit confirms I’m getting very little deep sleep. Of course, being on your phone at this time of night isn’t recommended... blushmoon

I tend to go through the whole alphabet trying to think of boys’ names or girls’ names - one for each letter. For a change I try UK place names, countries of the world, animals and birds etc. I usually miss out the letters X and Z though! I rarely get beyond one set, though sometimes have to make a second list, which usually does the trick.

petra Ooh, that's good to know.

Thank you ixion. I'm not a huge fan of some of the other ingredients either (fussy -me?) but going to risk it if there's no licorice taste. I've been using a story podcast called 'Nothing much happens' which seems to help me get to sleep, but staying asleep is another matter... Thank you to th OP for the original tip.

NanTheWiser Tue 19-Jan-21 12:09:24

Well, on the back of this thread, I bought a box yesterday, and tried it last night.

I really disliked the cloying, sweet aftertaste of what I guess to be the licorice content, probably because I have been low-carb and sugar free for about 5 years, and have no desire for sweet stuff these days.

It certainly didn’t help me to sleep - far from it, I had a very restless and sleepless night! So not for me, I’m afraid.

I shall continue taking either Kalms one-a-night, or 5-HTP, or Nytol, as I usually do.

Thank you for that Missfoodlove, will get some when I do my shop. Would love to use magnesium as I’m a frequent migraine sufferer but it upsets my stomach too much.?

MayBee70 Tue 19-Jan-21 13:45:41

I tried it again last night and again drifted into sleep quite quickly with my tea and Bob’s voice. I’ve only got one tea bag left but have added some to our next Tesco’s delivery. I love the taste of licorice so it suits me fine. I’m also going to put it in my nighttime water bottle as I often wake up feeling thirsty and end up drinking squash or something. Yet again the dog needed to go out in the night but tonight DH is on doggy toilet duty so hopefully I can sleep through. gransnet is great for things like this. I had a bad shoulder and someone suggested using a heated wheat bag on it: again something I had in a drawer but hadn’t thought to use: but it worked.

I use a magnesium oil spray on my feet as it is easily absorbed. Even though it’s an oil it still dries my skin though, so I put cream on the next day. You could also soak your feet in Epsom salts. note to self, go and spray some on now....

dragonfly46 Tue 19-Jan-21 13:56:54

I tried it last night and I could not get to sleep. Not sure why sometimes I find that so it could not have been the tea. I will try again tonight.

avitorl Tue 19-Jan-21 14:23:18

I'm expecting my Pukka tea delivery today and will try it tonight.

A very helpful GN suggested that I try halving the Phenergan ,
Pills that do work for me but also leave dozey the next day.I'm happy to say I tried it last night and it worked.Next time I will try a 1/4 to see if that works too.

bikergran Tue 19-Jan-21 16:43:53

Bought some "pukka" night time tea today, Tesco.

Can't wait to go to bed lol.

If I haven't arrived on GN by 14.00 hrs tomorrow, it's worked grin

Momilsom Tue 19-Jan-21 18:29:17

It’s got Valerian in it I think which is used in herbal products like Kalm and Nytol! It would make you sleep. I would think

bikergran Wed 20-Jan-21 09:17:04

Tried my cuppa last night, wasn't keen on smell or tast but stuck with it.

Infused it for 15 mins as stated, I think I must have drifted off pretty quick(don't really remember) but...alas had to get up 3 times during the night to the bathroom. But that's normal for me.

Will try again tonight, I think it's something I could get used to. smile zzzzzzz.......

Katyj Wed 20-Jan-21 09:32:58

Be careful when buying phenergan I didn’t know there were two strengths 10mg and 25mg I think. The pharmacist sold me the 25mg, the first one I took really knocked me out I felt dreadful when i managed to crawl out of bed the next day. Now I divide it into 4,less if I can and get a very good night sleep.

Missfoodlove Wed 20-Jan-21 09:33:47

bikergran I’m glad it helped, I get up twice a night whatever I’ve been drinking but with the pukka, I’m straight back to sleep.

I have a small coffee cup not a large mug so it’s quite concentrated.

Esspee Wed 20-Jan-21 12:10:39

Phenergan seems to concentrate my urine so that as well as a great night’s sleep I don’t have to go to the toilet.

As avitor1 mentioned 5mg gives a great sleep with no drowsiness in the morning so try half a tablet. If that works you can even try a quarter tablet until you find the best strength for you.
