What are you doing to boost your natural immunity?

This is for people who, generally, think themselves fit and healthy. Which supplements do you use? Are there certain foods you find helpful? Do you have age-old family remedies that you still use? Do any of you eat fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir or kombucha and how effective are they for you? How about essential oils, do these work for you?

Hi the best thing to do is to eat fresh vegetables and fruit with line caught fish and grass fed meat (if you are an omnivore). Avoid most things in packets and fruit juices which raise your blood glucose. Our immune systems cannot be boosted as such. Just eat and drink as well as you can.

I was taking Vitamins and extra D it still got me. Although I don't seem to be as sick as some others but I'm only day 3 today. I am classed as obese though as I'm at least 3 stone overweight.

No, we don't use any of all this, but we eat a sensible and very varied diet, take daily excercise either walking or cycling, and try to stay mentally active as well.

Be active with walking and my little bottle of Actimel every morning keeps me just fine. Also lots of fresh air. Good luck everyone

Vitamin D daily and Turmeric shots every day before breakfast

Destin Mon 04-Oct-21 13:43:47

Vitamin D, C, B12 and a probiotic tablet daily - all added to banana/spinach/ protein powder/almond milk smoothie that I make daily for breakfast - a routine I have been following for the past 8 years or more. I’m not an anti vaxxer so all my shots are up to date - shingles, Covid, flu etc. I believe in the value of cooking nutritious meals and eating lots of fresh veggies with our evening meal - always served with a protein of meat or fish. I have an allotment so grow many of the veggies we eat. All this effort is worth it because at 79 I still play tennis twice a week, take 2 yoga classes weekly and am a regular at the local gym for spinning sessions. I’m still using HRT patches .....the only medication I take.....and - I believe - it’s the last piece of the puzzle that keeps me relatively pain free and enjoying an energized lifestyle at my stage in life.

Cod liver oil and VitD, plus I walk a lot with my dog for exercise. I drink loads of water through the day and green tea.

TwinLolly Mon 04-Oct-21 12:44:49

Vitamins D and C, zinc and Omega 3. Also a probiotic thrown in for good measure.

Maudi Mon 04-Oct-21 12:43:54

I make my own kefir, kombucha and live yogurt all very easy to do. Also take good multi vit and iron, sometimes top up with extra B12, VitD, zinc and magnesium. Try and walk everyday day to get 8.000 steps bur don't always achieve this.

The Mediterranean diet is just that- a form of diet. To have been born and bred in med region carries generations of well-being or otherwise, I don't hold with the theory that we can buy ourselves out of bad health by suddenly eating brightly coloured /raw foods etc. I've eaten what is probably considered a continental style diet since 20 when I got Wed ,and was taught how to cook etc by my MiL who was German. Lots of what my own Ma used to call "funny food" ! Or "foreign stuff" she liked it too because it was 99% home made from scratch. I cannot get my head around some of the utter junk we have on offer in UK still.

Vitamin D every other day. Lots of salmon. Predi. so have to limit fruit. Fresh air walks.

Gabrielle56 Mon 04-Oct-21 12:27:52

Bit D all year round, not just winter months.wont do any harm and Def. Will be beneficial. We get very little D from sunshine in UK so to think we do t need it in summer is a falsehood. Immunity is bettered by good circulation of beneficial things like BLOOD! ? there's a lot of bunkum out there about how we can physically alter our body chemistry and the like with 'supplements' ! I think the only benefit of 99% of these snake oil products is to the seller! Keeping active eat varied diet (we are omnivores) and cut smoking /the bad stuff out. Drink ok in moderation 1-2 glasses/week maybe. Otherwise I don't fall under the Influence of 'influencers' !!

This is not a competition but I can match Monica but MOSTLY by 'I just live for each day'. Perfect. I have experience of an adonis type gentleman disappearing in an instant. Enjoy whatever you can whenever you can.

Vitamin D and Actimel

I notice that many have mentioned Vitamin D supplements. I have suffered from acid reflux for about 10 years and have tried many ways to try and control this naturally by diet, not eating late, raising the end of the bed, cider vinegar (which made it worse) etc etc but more recently have been taking Omeprazole.
However when I was prescribed Vitamin D supplements by my GP my acid reflux went into overdrive. I had no idea it was these tablets that was causing this til the GP pointed it out. It took months afterwards to settle down.
Has anybody else had this and perhaps been able to overcome this side affect ?

Dee1012 Mon 04-Oct-21 12:02:56

I was recently diagnosed with an autoimmune condition and during my last appointment with the Consultant, asked about this.
His advice was a varied diet, a good quality general vitamin / mineral supplement, vit D and vit' B12 plus folic acid.

I've always taken a general supplement but since adding the B12 and folic acid, feel an improvement. Hair and skin have improved and I'm sleeping better!
Perhaps psychological but I'll take that if it works for me grin.

inishowen Mon 04-Oct-21 11:53:28

I take vit D over the winter. Also Evening Primrose Oil which was recommended by a doctor.

Babs758 Mon 04-Oct-21 11:50:46

Vitamin D from 1 October onwards, regular swimming, lots of fish and vegetables, wearing a mask (!), and sleep with windows open..
Some interesting comments re arthritis here.. I do eat a lot of tomatoes and quite a bit of bread..

Naninka Mon 04-Oct-21 11:47:40

Magnesium, tumeric, centrum 50+, nettle tea.
You only need 6 Brazil nuts a month to get the right amount of selenium.

M0nica Mon 04-Oct-21 10:33:00

BlueSky I agree, good genes.

I do always keep reminding myself that things can change and rapidly and for no obvious reason, I have seen this happen to so many, so I just live for the day.

BlueSky Sun 03-Oct-21 19:23:12

Good genes M0nica! When I’ve been asked in hospital what medication I’m on, and I say just BP tablets, they seem rather surprised as if expecting a long list!
