Vitamin D3, what dose do you take?

I've read the dose of 20iu was set only to stop contracting Rickets and hasn't changed for 150 years.

Apparently 5,0000 - 10,000iu per day is now considered a useful dose.

So, have others increased the dosage in line with the above?

I take one tab 1,000 mg daily prescribed dose

I’m going to stick to 4,000 a day. But I did start off by doing a week or so when I took a much larger dose to boost my D3 level ( not sure where I read about doing that but it might have been a D3 Facebook page).

Same as Audi10

4,000 for me as well as a supplement and also more in a daily multivitamin

I ve told this tale before so apologies if you’ve already heard it
My close friend was told by her doctor to start taking Vit D as she was a little low He did not prescribe them and her daughter thought she was doing her mum a favour bought the strongest she could find
Roll on 3 month s and my friend was having a blood test for something unrelated when the results came back the doctor asked to see her and told her to come off the Vit D immediately as she was close to poisoning her self
So more is not necessarily best
Go by the rules I guess is the message

I take 1000 iu a day as recommended by my endocrinologist. I have a vitamin D deficiency and I have regular blood tests to monitor this and other things.

Are you really taking 1000 mg a day Audi10? That’s a massive dose of 1,000,000 mcg!

BlueBelle Mon 13-Dec-21 20:59:36

This is very confusing we have iu, mg and mcg
The pharmacist told me to take 500 iu I m not deficient just taking as a boost in our grey weather

Namsnanny Mon 13-Dec-21 21:39:12

Yes BlueBelle I found it confusing that they've changed the way of measuring.
I've read that 1000iu is equivalent to 25mcg.
But don't trust me, I could easily be wrong!

I've spent the afternoon trying to find the best value per iu pill out there???? (As if I haven't got better things to do? Truth be told, I haven't).
But once I started I felt compelled to continue.blush
The internet is a time waster isnt it?

BTW Bluebelle I'll take your advice about taking too much on board.

1000 mg here. We get long winters, and a lot of cloud cover.

Gossamerbeynon1945 Mon 13-Dec-21 22:09:16

I take 1000mg a day. This dose was recommended by an endocrinologist, because I have an underactive thyroid. I was told to take this indefinitely. At the time I had a blood test and I think my level of Vitamin D was 11.

Cabbie21 Mon 13-Dec-21 22:22:22

1000 iu per day.

This is a link to a youtube video of a conversation between Dr John Campbell and Dr Michael Cohen who works in Israel as a GP. It's quite long but gives a lot of information about vitamin D, and the other supplements to take with it.
VitaminD

Ooops, sorry just seen there's a whole thread about this video. Ignore me blush

May I ask if anyone has noticed any credible 'results' from taking vit D3?

As I understand it, it is very helpful in switching on the genes of the immune system, acting as an anti inflammatory, and lowering blood sugar.

But without a blood test how would anyone know if it was helping?

Namsnanny Mon 13-Dec-21 23:47:31

Is there Rosie51? I looked under Health but didnt find it. I have looked it up on youtube though.

You would need regular blood tests to know if it was helping anything, unless it was something like hairloss, where you could see an improvement yourself.

Does anyone really think that if the government could get us all to buy vit D and it would prevent covid then they wouldn't take that option?

Namsnanny It's on the Coronavirus forum which is why I didn't see it initially.

I am prescribed a calcium and D3 medication because cancer treatment put me into osteopenia. I didn't notice any physical changes. Since I've increased my vitamin D to a much higher level (and I do take K2 supplements too) I've noticed my lifelong soft weak nails are much stronger, and I've not had a cold or any other illness for the entirety of this pandemic. I've no doubt mask wearing and social distancing have been a big factor, but even mixing with grandchildren (usually a good source of 'germs') hasn't brought anything to me. This is purely anecdotal but I'll be continuing. Now if somebody could tell me how to get my chemo loss bald patches to regrow I'd be like a pig in muck grin

It's not that it will prevent Covid, but that vitamin D is indicated in supporting our immune response which may help if you are infected with the virus.
As the blood test for vitamin D levels is expensive few will ever get it done on the NHS.

MissAdventure Tue 14-Dec-21 00:17:07

Yes, mine was low, but it took over a year for it to be tested.
I had hoped it would answer so many health related issues, but alas, nope.
Still as bald as a coot.
After prescribing a massive "loading dose" I was told to buy my own, and that they wouldn't test again.

I was recommended to take 3000 by the Consultant who diagnosed me with Burning Mouth Syndrome - it's in spray form so really easy to take, but to be honest in 2 months I've noticed no improvement.
