Vitamin D3, what dose do you take?

I've read the dose of 20iu was set only to stop contracting Rickets and hasn't changed for 150 years.

Apparently 5,0000 - 10,000iu per day is now considered a useful dose.

So, have others increased the dosage in line with the above?

I gather from Dr Campbells video, that a pale skinned person exposed to a day in the sun in the Northern hemisphere, will absorb on average 15,000iu of vit d3. A Somalian in the hit sun of Africa, also 15,000.
Its interesting that both skin colours regulate to the same ratio, isnt it?
I suppose that means that we have evolved to take in that much because our bodies need that level.

I take one tablet a day , it says it is 25g 1000 iu, my nails have stopped splitting .
I started taking vit D3 to help my thinning hair , but it hasn’t done anything yet ?

I take one per day, as it says on the label. Each one contains
25 ug.. ug is what it looks like through the magnifyng glass.
I have no idea what ug is.

I take 5000iu twice a day on the advice of my specialist, I have an auto immune condition that affects my joints quiet badly. I'm tested every six months with a battery of tests and they always come back fine. I feel ok and always have to be fair, I don't get colds etc but never have. My joints are still deteriorating though.

You would need regular blood tests to know if it was helping anything, unless it was something like hairloss, where you could see an improvement yourself.

Does anyone really think that if the government could get us all to buy vit D and it would prevent covid then they wouldn't take that option?

No. No money to be made out of it ( and I’m not into conspiracy theories, either). Everyone I know that works fir the NHS has been taking it since the start of the pandemic. I now take K2 and magnesium with it as well, though. Dr John was a bit late advocating the taking of K2 so I’ve just taken it every so often., but now taking it every day. Still not sure of the dose. Read that 100mcg daily is the correct dose but I’ve got a spray K2 that is 180ug.

I’m still not sure on self medicating on Vit D, as in my days it was one of the vitamins you could get too much of, as it’s stored in the body, not like the B/C Vits that are water soluble. Still different story if prescribed by consultant.

Yes, it is possible to take too much VitD. At extremely high doses, it's toxic, but even at lower doses, it can result in a build up of calcium in the body, which causes problems.

Yes Growstuff it’s the calcification inside the body that worries me, so I think I’ll just stick to the standard one a day multivitamins and minerals for the 50+!

paddyann54 Fri 07-Jan-22 12:45:57

Vit D has been prescribed and delivered to all those who are either shielding or on the most vulnerable list here in Scotland since the start of the pandemic .I know my late MIL got it and my OH does .

MayBee70 Fri 07-Jan-22 14:25:06

If you take K2 it prevents calcification. I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence but all of my family have been taking VitD throughout the pandemic and those that have had covid have had it quite mildly. The dose recommended by the government is just to prevent rickets. It isn’t a vitamin as such but a hormone and almost every part of the body needs it.

As said up thread we take in up to 15,000ius with a day in the sun here.
Black skin regulates that absorption to 15,000 in Africa. Its pointing to a higher dose being useful. Although not every day granted.
As Maybe said K2 and vit d3 together is the best option according to the expertss

The Facebook page I’m on recommends 10,000 in a day but I’m sticking to 4,000. I wish I could have a blood test to find out what my level is. It’s supposed to protect against MS as well but also helps people that are suffering from it.

Esspee Fri 07-Jan-22 14:50:30

Oh my goodness please don’t take recommendations on medical issues from Facebook.
The NHS website is trustworthy but please everybody remember micrograms and milligrams are very different measurements, 1 milligram equals 1000 micrograms so huge overdoses are possible if you mix them up.

MayBee70 Fri 07-Jan-22 15:14:12

It’s a page dedicated to Vit D and I also take advice from other sources, too. The NHS recommended dose is still to prevent rickets I believe. I also watch DrJohn Campbells utube channel that advises on Vit D doses and he has a lot of qualified people giving advice. Dr Fauci in America takes 6,000 in a day I believe, and he’s quite a small man. I agree that we all need to research what we take but government/ WHO advice ( hand washing at the start of the pandemic being enough, mask wearing being a waste of time etc ) has often been proved to be incorrect.

nadateturbe Fri 07-Jan-22 15:24:46

I take 1000IU every 2 days.

PinkCosmos Fri 07-Jan-22 15:46:25

I take 1000 iu/25ug a day - when I remember i.e. about five times a week. I started taking it at the beginning of Covid as I heard that it helped with immunity.

I have noticed that my nails are stronger and my mood has improved.

On a side note about taking too much. I read that magnesium was supposed to help you to sleep. I started taking magnesium tablets (can't remember the dose, just some over the counter ones). I was also putting Epsom salts in the bath. A few months later I had an unrelated blood test. It came back saying my calcium levels were high!! I stopped taking it.
