Anyone take Atorvastatin?

I’ve just been prescribed Atorvastatin as my cholesterol measured seven after a recent blood test. I don’t really know whether to take it or not as the benefits seem to me to be quite small and I’ve heard that lots of people have unpleasant side effects from statins. My doctor described my risk as high although it works out at a 17.9% risk of stroke or heart event over the next ten years. 17 or 18 people in a 100 over ten years doesn’t seem that high to me, and then the statins don’t work for some people which means they take them and have no benefit. I think the benefit (of not having a stroke, heart event) is about seven people in ten years who will avoid the risk of illness. I hope you can understand what I’m saying, it sounds a bit jumbled to me.
Does anyone else take this drug? Have you had side effects?

Reluctantly started taking it two years ago. Cholesterol was 8+ I’m on 40mgs but not had a blood test to check what results are now. No side effects apart from wind!

It's got to be a life saver for our future
I had a reading of 8.1 in September pur on the same statins as you have mentioned and last week had a reading of 5 so I'm delighted and privileged to be given a chance to live a healthy life

Sorry to be a fly in the ointment but they gave me horrendous to nosebleeds. Never again!

I saw that nose bleeds are one of the side effects some people suffer, but overall I think I’m going to give them a go. Did your doctor change your prescription Kate?

I believe the current advice is that they are only given after a heart attack or stroke and before 65. One of the GP at our practice is keen on prescribing statins luckily the consultant didn’t think I needed them.

I have taken Atorvastatin since 2017 following a slight stroke and have had no side effects whatsoever.
If it has been prescribed for you take it, and if you think you are experiencing side effects consult your doctor and you will be prescribed a different one.

Exactly the same for me, I had a mini stroke ( TIA) in August and put on both blood thinners and Atorvastatin a couple of weeks later as my cholesterol was just over 6. My GP said he would not normally prescribe statins for cholesterol at that level ( would look at weight loss, diet and life style changes first) but has agreed with the stroke consultant this time. I also have high blood pressure so those meds were tweaked at the same time.

I’m 65 and the Stroke consultant said that most people over 40 should be on statins!

I have had no noticeable side effects and am grateful to have had very prompt treatment from the NHS following my TIA and subsequent sight problems so will take every medication they suggest.

I think most people over 50 take it, I have been for years with no side effects.

I do wonder if the side effects that people report are due to the aches and pains of old age rather than the medication.

Not all the time, when my DH was on statins he was 60 and ended up crippled using 2 sticks to walk, he came of them now he is 72 and runs 2 charity shops he needs new knees but can still work and walk better than he did on the statins - so not always old age

I don’t think you can put really bad wind down to old age!

I’ve tried two brands of statins but unfortunately they seem to trigger optical migraines.

Not suitable for people with pre/diabetes or liver problems. Hopefully a GP or consultant will check all this before prescribing.

Been taking Astorvastatin for about a year. Positive side effects for me are no migraines and reduced blood pressure so win win for me. Try them and see, you might be surprised
