Anyone take Atorvastatin?

I’ve just been prescribed Atorvastatin as my cholesterol measured seven after a recent blood test. I don’t really know whether to take it or not as the benefits seem to me to be quite small and I’ve heard that lots of people have unpleasant side effects from statins. My doctor described my risk as high although it works out at a 17.9% risk of stroke or heart event over the next ten years. 17 or 18 people in a 100 over ten years doesn’t seem that high to me, and then the statins don’t work for some people which means they take them and have no benefit. I think the benefit (of not having a stroke, heart event) is about seven people in ten years who will avoid the risk of illness. I hope you can understand what I’m saying, it sounds a bit jumbled to me.
Does anyone else take this drug? Have you had side effects?

Yes, I do, maddyone. I've been taking it for about 5 years or so now. Luckily I haven 't had any side effects at all.
My cholesterol was about 7. At my last check up this summer it was 3.5. So it has worked well for me.
I must add that I was very reluctant to take it at first, and held off for about 2 or 3 years of nagging from the doctor.
But I'm glad he won in the end!
I wish you luck if you do decide to take it. It doesn't seem to suit everyone, but there are different ones to try if Atorvastatin doesn't suit you.

I have been taking Atorvastatin for many years and they worked well, however I had a heart attack in the summer and the dose was doubled. I have suffered from such wind! I tried something different but my cholesterol went up so now back on it. The only way to sort the wind is to make sure I eat at the same time as taking the tablet. Good luck.

I must admit to sometimes having a problem with wind!
But I didn't realise it might be caused by Atorvastatin..

I take it, although my cholesterol is 3.2 and has been for years. It was prescribed as a standard thing because I had a stroke in July.

HowVeryDareYou Fri 24-Dec-21 10:58:44

Meant to say, I haven't noticed any side effects. My husband is also on it, his cholesterol was 7.5, and he hasn't had any side-effects either.

Have taken Atorvastatin for many years with absolutely no side effects at all. I would say give it a try and if it’s not suitable ask for an alternative.
I must say, on the subject of wind, I haven’t suffered from that either.

I think most people over 50 take it, I have been for years with no side effects.

I do wonder if the side effects that people report are due to the aches and pains of old age rather than the medication.

ninathenana Fri 24-Dec-21 11:43:02

henetha same for me. I had no idea eithet

Chewbacca Fri 24-Dec-21 11:49:05

I've take it for 5 years with absolutely no side effects at all.

Sar53 Fri 24-Dec-21 11:52:53

I have also been taking it for many years with no noticeable side effects.

Morning Maddyone, my husband has been on it since having a double transplant 11 years ago. He doesn't have any side effects apart from slight problem with wind.

Sago Fri 24-Dec-21 12:25:46

I had dreadful side effects from this statin.
Constipation, wind and muscle cramps.
I’m now on Pravastatin without any side effects.

I was started on Atorvastatin, but it gave me itchy ankles! I understand it's a strong one. I'm now on simvastatin which is fine, no side effects whatsoever, and my cholesterol level is now down to 4.5.

Although I have low chlorestoral, clear ateries, no leaky valves, etcI was put on it after my first heart attack, as a precautionary measure. No side effects here.

nanna8 Fri 24-Dec-21 12:45:16

I’ve been taking them for nearly thirty years now. My cholesterol is very high without them, as was my parents who both died of heart attacks. They make me stiff but I would rather that than a stroke so I put up with it. I was put on a higher dose at one stage but I couldn’t cope with the stiffness and side effects so I compromise on a low dose but it is still worth it for me. I tried dieting and taking a lot of that margarine that is supposed to lower your levels but neither worked except in a very minor way. My daughter has high cholesterol now but she won’t take them. A matter of choice .

Been on Atorvastatin since 2007, when my cholesterol level was 7 as well. It has been a steady 3.5 for as long as I can remember----even with the lashings of Lurpak on the crumpets and everything else grin Possibly windy now and again but a small price to pay for clear arteries.

I only take 25mgs, hospital wanted me to take 40mgs on account of mum's history but I refused that amount, and the best time to take it is at bedtime so that it doesn't cause upset and can do its job properly of cleaning the pipes grin

twinnytwin Fri 24-Dec-21 12:47:19

I've been on it for about six months. No side effects whatsoever.

mumofmadboys Fri 24-Dec-21 12:56:14

I have recently started on it. No side effects.

tanith Fri 24-Dec-21 12:57:05

I had to change my statin twice before Atorvastatin and I’ve been on it 7 yrs with no side effects my cholesterol is now 3.5 down from 7+ so it’s been good for me.

Tusue Fri 24-Dec-21 13:00:42

Hi my DH been taking it for years due to family history of cardiac problems, he has no side effects.
I’m a nurse and I honestly feel this stuff saves lives-stroke and heart attack can be life ending or life limiting, any preventative measures are REALLY a worth trying.

rosie1959 Fri 24-Dec-21 13:32:52

My husband has been on it quite some time and no obvious side effects. Doesn't appear to give him extra wind but it would probably be difficult to tell lol

annsixty Fri 24-Dec-21 13:38:28

I was started on Atorvastatin but had very swollen feet and ankles which is apparently a well known side effect. I am now on Simvastatin with no problem but have to confess I do have wind far more than before.
I hadn’t connected the two.

maddyone Fri 24-Dec-21 15:23:00

Thank you for all your replies. It is very reassuring to read how many of you have done well on this drug, and had few, or no side effects. I think I shall start the tablets after Christmas, no point in tempting fate and starting today or on Christmas Day.
Thank you again for your very helpful replies.

eazybee Fri 24-Dec-21 15:56:20

I have taken Atorvastatin since 2017 following a slight stroke and have had no side effects whatsoever.
If it has been prescribed for you take it, and if you think you are experiencing side effects consult your doctor and you will be prescribed a different one.
