Christmas mishap

I tripped up yesterday at my DD's and have broken a bone in my foot - the same foot in which I broke 2 bones about 7 years ago. I have a boot and a frame; and crutches for upstairs.

I have been on two sticks for three weeks anyway because of right hip replacement problem and acute sciatica - I had been given a pain relief patch for all of that and thankfully it has meant the broken foot is less painful than it could have been.

Such a shame after a lovely Christmas with family.

No! Don't change your name back again Luckygirl smile

Commiserations and I hope it mends well - do you have an appointment to see about your hip soon too?

flowersto all who had accidents at Christmas

I am clumsy and accident-prone so have been trying to concentrate and be more careful but it's so easy to do.

Thank goodness for your stair lift, Lucky, I hope you can sail majestically and safely up to bed with a cup of Baileys hot chocolate and a good book.
Take good care.

TeacherA how awful. Hope you feel better soon.

Take care both ?

BladeAnnie Tue 28-Dec-21 10:38:47

Luckygirl ?. Hope you soon feel better. After I had surgery to fuse my ankle and was non weight bearing for 12 weeks, we got a cross body bag (which became know as my pouch!!) and I could safely transport a bottle of water or juice from the kitchen to the lounge. I also used to make a hot drink in my travel cup. Mine is one which seals properly but if you don't have one if these you could use a small thermos. Where there's a will and all that!!

It is such a challenge when on your own to carry anything when on crutches (upstairs) and frame (downstairs). Plate of dinner? - well, no. Glass of water? - well, no. Thank goodness I had a stairlift put in when I moved in in March.

Yes, thank goodness for your foresight!

As far carrying and getting around downstairs, if you have hard floors (even just in the kitchen) do you have an office chair on castors? Or could you borrow one? You could whiz around on one of those, propelling yourself with your other foot.

Oh I'm sorry to hear of accidents over Christmas hope all feel better soon ??

TerriT Tue 28-Dec-21 22:12:42

Blade Annie. Bit cheeky I know but I’m on a list for an ankle fusion. I e put it off twice as I’ve only ever heard of negative results and not positive ones. So reluctant to go through so much to be no better off. Could you private message me and tell me your experience and result. I hope you soon recover luckygirl13. Go easy on the baileys if useing a stairlift!!!

Ouch Luckygirl that’s really tough for you on top of your hip problem.
I had a hip replacement two weeks ago and am now paranoid about falling over while I am on two crutches. It’s so easily done isn’t it, no matter how careful we are.
I hope all those with injuries make a speedy recovery.

"I have a boot and a frame; and crutches for upstairs."

Special provision for your love life? :-)

Coco51 Wed 29-Dec-21 11:56:09

Sorry to hear of your woes - have you had a bone density scan ? With repeat breaks you may need medication to guard against fragile bones.

Mummer Wed 29-Dec-21 12:17:13

Look on the bright side- it's not spring/summer?!

Mummer Wed 29-Dec-21 12:18:54

I had both hips done two years apart and nevfell or nearly fell at all! However I fell over frequently before I had them done as my legs simply wouldn't work! I don't see the problem? I'd love to know why people 'fall' after they have had a hip done?

crazygranny Wed 29-Dec-21 12:40:21

So sorry. Hope you're soon on the mend!

Alioop Wed 29-Dec-21 12:54:43

Hope you are on the mend very soon so for the time being just sit and relax with a good book and a big box of Xmas chocolates. I hope 2022 will be better for you and the rest of the Gransnetters who have had a bad or troublesome year flowers

grandtanteJE65 Wed 29-Dec-21 12:58:56

I hope you both feel better soon.

OP what did you trip over? Is it perhaps time, once you are mobile again for new glasses? That's usually why I start falling over things.

saltnshake Wed 29-Dec-21 13:13:13

I had a knee replacement several years ago, getting belongings up and down stairs was not easy. I solved many of the problems by making a simple cotton cross over bag to put phone, purse, water bottle etc. in leaving my hands free for hand rail and walking stick. I made one for a neighbour when she had her hip replacement. She said it was so useful.

Gwenisgreat1 Wed 29-Dec-21 13:16:32

Luckygirl3 hope you are all better soon.
Mummer I used to fall a lot, but put it down to wearing Shapers Shoes, seemed a lot better when I changed back to Normal footwear - until I was in a busy York, and got pushed off the pavement onto the cobbled road. The irony was i was just going to the train after an appointment at York District Hospital, that's where I ended back to have my new hip replaced. That was 2017, I have fallen once since, in poor lighting

Luckygirl3 Wed 29-Dec-21 14:11:27

Just spent 2 and a half hours in the covid soup that is fracture clinic.

The bone broken is the first metatarsal along the inside of foot, near the big toe. Apparently it normally takes a major bump to cause it to break - I just tapped it lightly on the edge of my stick. But I have bad osteoporosis for which I am having every possible treatment.

Six weeks at least in the boot, but he has said that I can gradually weight-bear as pain allows. That does make life easier as I can stand on it and have my hands free to put a ready meal in the microwave.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Wed 29-Dec-21 17:28:08

Sending best wishes to Lucky girl and Teacheranne and hoping you both mend soon. Bad enough to have injuries anyway, but at special times of the year just makes it worse. Take care, both of you.

GreenGran78 Wed 29-Dec-21 22:49:22

Get well soon, Lucky. You are certainly having a rough time. Let's hope that the New Year brings better luck to you.
When I had my hip replacement, several years ago, I picked up 2 x 3 wheeled trollies and also a tray trolley on wheels - all from my local Charity shop. The tray trolley was great for carrying things through from the kitchen. I kept one 3- Wheeler upstairs, for going to the loo in the night. The other helped me to get about, inside and out. They were all a great help.
Now that I don't need them they have been loaned out, numerous times, to various friends.

MayBee70 Wed 29-Dec-21 22:59:51

Oh no. I’m so sorry to hear this. And there was me feeling sorry for myself because I sliced my finger on the plastic the mince pies were in ( serves me right for eating mince pies from a plastic container but I didn’t actually buy them myself).

Teacheranne Thu 30-Dec-21 00:15:52

I removed the bandage on my thumb tonight as it got wet in the shower - I wish I hadn’t! The stitches look fine, but the skin around them is white and very soft. I left the bandage off for a while to let the air get at my skin then bandaged it up again. I’ve got an appointment with the district nurse tomorrow so I’ll see what she says, the white skin looks rather nasty but it might be fine. At least it is not as painful but it’s surprising how much I need to use my thumb!

ginny Thu 30-Dec-21 11:54:06

Wishing you both a speedy recovery. ?

Luckygirl3 Thu 30-Dec-21 11:57:43

You were very daring to take the bandage off! - some things are better not looked at!!

I am struggling this morning with the pain and also my dicky ticker has decided to go haywire at this moment. Never rains and all that .......

I have dupuytrans in my hands, thankfully it hasn’t progressed (touch wood). But some people have to have their little fingers removed and it seems you need your little finger more than other fingers, apart from the thumb that is. I’ve lost track of how man times I’ve sliced into my index finger: worst time was when I sliced it open when reaching up for a coat hanger. I worked at an airport one year preparing food for in flight catering, and I sliced into my index finger when cutting up some lettuce. They were so furious with me because I ruined a whole sink full of lettuce: no sympathy for the state of my poor finger….

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 30-Dec-21 18:38:54

Let us know how you get on with the nurse Teacheranne. Hopefully it's rather like when you take a plaster off your finger, the skin has gone white but soon recovers.
