Hip replacement pre/post operation pls

Cutting a long story short I have (at last!!) been given a date for a new hip. It will be my first proper operation so feel relieved and happy but nervous ?, All I was told at the hospital was it would be a 48 hour stay.

I don’t know anyone who has had this done and wonder if anyone with experience has suggestions or advice about what they found helpful either before or after the operation or useful aids, or anything about the whole process.
Thanks ?

Here we go again ...bump!

How are you Fanny, think it’s about now you are having the hip hop?
I went to a first post COVID trip to the theatre the other day and got in conversation with a woman struggling up the many stairs. She told me she is waiting for a hip op date and so I put on a sprint to show her how successful it can be. She was suitably impressed /encouraged but only later did I think ?
‘That was a bit foolish!’

Bump!

silverlining48 Wed 15-Jun-22 18:00:24

It’s not on the Active list at all. Not yet anyway. Why?

silverlining48 Wed 15-Jun-22 17:56:37

Well done iPadGrandma, hope you get clarification very soon.
If you don’t get anywhere consider PALS the patient liaison depot which can be very helpful in cases like this.
I assume you responded to surgical rehab and told them what has been going on. Everything helps. I hope this gets sorted out soon. It must be very frustrating and as said before, a waste of your time and theirs.

Now as I post this I will check if it’s at the top of the Active list or as us usual, half way down.

iPadGrandma Wed 15-Jun-22 17:37:11

I have taken the plunge and emailed the surgeon’s secretary. Thank you for encouraging me to do this.

I have just received a reply and my email is being forwarded to him.

My first email to her was in February and, as I said before, I didn’t get a reply.

And this afternoon Surgical Rehab left me a voicemail to ask if I had a date yet.

What puzzles me is, you would think the hospital would know whether I had a date!

All good wishes to those getting about with their new hips, and those waiting along with me.

And another for luck ?

Bump!

silverlining48 Tue 14-Jun-22 16:13:50

Just posted above and its already near the bottom of Active.
Why?

silverlining48 Tue 14-Jun-22 16:10:36

Glad all is going well NN. Yes 8 weeks have flown by. Thanks re bath, and was surprised that my leg/s just refused to bend. They nau have scented my trepidation. Will try again.

Just noticed that your last post is already slipping down the list faster than it should. Its down with those posted an hour earlier...it happened to mine too last week.

Naughtyneine Tue 14-Jun-22 15:45:27

Just popping in to catch up on fellow 8 weekers and imminent ops. Good Luck Fanny... Every single week makes a big difference and it's only when you look back that you realise how far you've actually come. Re getting a date ..I called the consultants secretary 3 times and finally got through and was told to call the admissions team....and. when I did she said I was next on her list to call. I got just under a months notice. I do sympathise with the bath issue. It's my go to when things hurt despite having a lovely shower. I actually got back into the bath very early as I was desperate for the comfort. I stepped in using my good side then bent my good leg ( keeping the operated one straight) and lowered myself down. Getting up I did same using my good leg and arms to lever myself to standing. ( It's a good workout for your arms). I did have the reassurance of my DOH being on the bathroom 'just in case'. I have nearly got my confidence back when out...although I was nervous taking the large dog down a flight of steps at the beach last week and didn't opt for scrambling over a few rocks. I was shocked at myself to be truthful. I think the thought of tumbling and needing to be airlifted off the beach and create chaos for my other half had a lot to do with it.
Re rude people staring at scars...I have already decided if anyone comments on mine...I will just say ' the shark didn't survive'.

Thats interesting GrannyLaine yes I did have a spinal anaesthetic, but wonder why they couldnt use some of the blood they had taken only days before. An extra vial if necessary, All water under the bridge now, of course. Happily.

Aveline Tue 14-Jun-22 13:03:03

The phlebotomist at the hospital I went to was lovely. I woke up one morning to find her performing reiki on me! She had asked previously. She was such a nice kind lady she could have had gallons of blood off me!

FannyCornforth Tue 14-Jun-22 12:23:55

Thank you.
Just a flying visit - yesterday’s blood test was in case of needing a transfusion.
See you all later x

It seems to be usual to have a blood test immediately prior to the op, I was surprised as they had done one the previous week. My veins are always hard to find so it’s always a bit of a battle.
Not long now. Good luck ?

If you're having epidural / spinal anaesthetic silverlining they need to check clotting factors. Also imperative to do a sample for crossmatching in case of haemorrhage and check for any blood markers for recent infection which will generally mean that major elective surgery like this will be postponed.

Hi! I’m okay thank you.
I’m going to the Nuffield for a blood test this morning - I’m just going to phone them to see if there is anything else that I’m going there for.
I was a bit bombarded with information when I went for my pre op.
I’ve got to start my Hibiscrub and nose squirting regime today.
We’ve had a bit of a panic this weekend as our next door neighbour has Covid. We’re really friendly with them, but thankfully not in and out each other’s houses.
If DH gets Covid again it would be absolute panic stations (he’d have to go into hospital for anti virals).
I’ll catch up with you Silverlining, Laine and everyone when I get back later.
Take care everyone x
