Hello! ?
Welcome to ? 2!

A huge thank you and well done to Silverlining thanks for creating the first thread (which I’ll link to shortly)
It was an amazingly successful thread; which was remarkable considering that most of the time it was invisible! smile

Home.. Had slight bleed from area but they think it was due to Apixaban which I had restated, otherwise would have been discharged yesterday, Day 2.
Boy its been hot, had the dreaded Ted Stockings on, I will try but can see those being ignored in the day time.
Just very sore, no significant pain but sent home with extra painkillers.
So I just must remember to not bend down and let my "House Elf" take the lead.

Hope everyone else is going good too.

silverlining48 Sat 13-Aug-22 15:33:07

Glad you are home Visgirl, go easy with the painkillers, they can cause nasty constipation, drink plenty of water.
It’s only a couple of days but you will soon start to feel much better. Keep in touch
Best wishes. flowers

Aveline Sat 13-Aug-22 15:40:21

Oh yes. Keep hydrated. Constipation is no joke! Try to rest but walk about a bit from time to time.
Re bending. It's not the bending that's the problem it's the twisting. Using a 'golfer's reach' as outlined in the info I was given I could subside gracefully down to pick things up. Try that next week when you're feeling a bit better.

Aveline Sat 13-Aug-22 15:42:18

Here's an explanation

Visgir1 Sat 13-Aug-22 16:12:53

Aveline.. Thank you for the tip and yes I will keep up the water intact.

I will update soon.

Good morning and thank you for your good wishes. Still in hospital. On Thursday morning, after my last message, I had two vasovagel episodes ( fainting) Fortunately on chair first time and just back in bed after commode trip second. I awoke both times with 5 doctors from Crash Team at my bedside. Then I was sick, after first faint. Apparently I had been unresponsive when they arrived, according to lovely lady in bed opposite. She told me she thought I was a gonner!!
Bit of a history of fainting so I am not surprised.
Low BP also a problem but they are watching me very closely.
Paiu well controlled thank goodness. Have made it on crutches to loo at end of corridor, but not alone.
Very well cared for here, with ice lollies in afternoon too!
Hope all going well at home Visgirl.
Best wishes to everyone. I will be back!

Just popped in to offer encouragement to all those with new hips and to have a little ramble about my journey. I had my 3rd Hippiversary the other day (for my second replacement). It's been a challenge, but the difference to my quality of life is just amazing. There's been ups and downs with my health as I have other 'conditions' but the replacements themselves are just great. I had felt 'on my last legs' (sorry!) before the replacements. I am now practising regular yoga but do have problems with muscular atrophy after all the years of immobility. I can clean the house now (don't know if this is good or bad lol), potter in the garden and look after my granddaughter now and again. Life is much brighter and I'm determined to keep building muscle and independence, although I don't know if I'll ever ride a horse again, which I would love. Keep in touch with your body, listen to it and don't over-reach has been my mantra since discovering that I was more focussed upon trying to do too much! Good luck to you all. x

Welcome yogitree and thanks fir the encouraging words. Impressed with the yoga!

silverlining48 Mon 15-Aug-22 12:09:00

IPadGrandma hope you are ok now and you get home soon. I also have low bp and prone to faints ( or falls) was also sick the day after the op. I had a good telling off after that as I lay on the bed but there wasn’t a chair in the room I could use.
Let us know how you are getting on. Best wishes smile

GrandmasueUK Mon 15-Aug-22 13:12:01

Good afternoon everyone. I’ve been following your stories and I’m so pleased people are making good progress after replacements. I’d like to ask a couple of questions. I’ve been told I need both hips replaced. I have degeneration in my right hip and my left hip is always warm to the touch and has been ‘sticking’ which means occasionally I have to try and manipulate it to help me get off the loo or out of a chair. I was told a couple of years ago, just at the start of the pandemic that I needed bariatric surgery before they would consider hip surgery. It was also felt to be too risky for me in hospital at that time because of my weight and covid. It was before the vaccine and I was very frightened of going to any hospital.
I’m 67 and after attending virtual monthly meetings prior to bariatric surgery I’ve decided I don’t want a bypass. I had sepsis last time I had surgery and I feel wary of ops. However, my quality of life has been really reduced. I need a walker or crutches in the house and a wheelchair on the few times I go out. I’ve only been to hospital or doctor appointments and I’ve been for one meal with friends and to the opticians during the past 2 years.
I was wondering what is the criteria for the hip hop. I am on co-codamol, which is not actually helping with pain management. I struggle going up and downstairs and I’m only having 3 drinks a day, as the loo is upstairs. I’ve found that cold packs on my hips helps a bit with the pain, but I find that the worst pain is actually in my right calf and my leg does give way, which is very scary. I wondered if this is a symptom of arthritis and what, if anything, other people do about it. I am a size 24, which is on the smaller size on the bariatric waiting list. I don’t think I can wait for another 3 years before I’m considered for hip surgery. It’s at least 2 years for the bypass and then another year to recover from that.
I have days when I’m quite upbeat, but other days I’m very depressed. Thankfully, I do have a most supportive partner, who works from home and who has taken on most of the household chores and I can do some things whilst seated. So sorry that this is a miserable post, I needed to let it all out and I know this is a very supportive forum, so thank you for listening. Hoping you are all continuing to improve daily. ?

silverlining48 Mon 15-Aug-22 14:22:49

Hello ? Grandmasue
Welcome to the hip hop thread.
Sorry you have so many problems with pain, havnt we all. As for obesity I read that this is not a contra issue and should not affect hip replacement surgery. I was interested as I am just at the early start of obesity, I wonder if that is a delaying tactic. If you are in pain you really need to see a consultant and if needed be on a hospital wait list, talk to your gp who should refer you.
As for calf pain I had that too for ages and have just realised that it has gone.
Expect you are trying to shift some weight anyway. If you have the hip surgery and the pain is gone that will make it easier to be more active.
Bariatric surgery is serious and I would hesitate too,
Good luck to you and keep in touch.

silverlining48 Mon 15-Aug-22 14:25:15

Ps go easy on codomol (constipation) and try to drink more.

Aveline Mon 15-Aug-22 14:36:59

Grandmasue. Before I went to get my hip assessed I lost two stones just as 'first aid' really because it was something I could actually do for myself. I'm glad I did it as the surgeon was happy to go ahead with the surgery.
I know it's boring etc etc etc but could you manage to lose a wee bit on your own? It could make a big difference to how you are perceived by the Dr. He made much of it on his report letter.
Every little helps!

GrandmasueUK Mon 15-Aug-22 14:56:11

Thank you for your support. I’m going to make a concerted effort to shift some weight. I also have type 2 diabetes and take medication. It has the opposite effect to the co-codamol, which can be very disconcerting! I have very little appetite as well, so I’m going to see what and where I can reduce intake. I know I can do it when I set my mind to it, so I’m off to write some meal ideas and I’ve just got myself a low carb cook book! I feel very encouraged already. ??

silverlining48 Mon 15-Aug-22 15:10:19

Well done Aveline, two stones is really good.

I lost just under 2 stones at slimming world 10 years ago, and until this year I kept it off . Now really struggling and cross with myself. We can do this!

Glad you have a plan Grandmasue. Go for it. smile

Charleygirl5 Mon 15-Aug-22 16:40:19

It is very difficult to lose weight but if the surgeon sees you are at least making an effort that will go in your favour.

3 drinks a day is insufficient especially in this horrendous heat. Lack of fluid can add to urinary tract infections.

I also would stay well clear of bariatric surgery, I think you have made the correct decision.

Have you considered having a stairlift fitted? I have had one for many years and if you are considering one please feel free to PM me because what you choose can affect your new hip (s).

Under no circumstances have both hips replaced at the same time. Again, feel free to PM me.

Aveline Mon 15-Aug-22 21:38:38

It seemed to matter to the surgeon that I was making the effort to lose weight.
Needless it's all piled on again but at least I'll know how to lose it again before my next hip op. sad

GrandmasueUK Mon 15-Aug-22 21:52:21

I was told that the orthopaedic surgeon would find it difficult to bend my leg because my stomach would get in the way! The doctor who was telling me this was so apologetic and kept trying to avoid the word obese. I think he was actually only about 12 yrs old and was so embarrassed and didn’t want to hurt my feelings. I know what I look like, I have a mirror and I almost felt sorry for him.

silverlining48 Mon 15-Aug-22 22:11:36

For the last few days i have had a late breakfast, missed lunch and had an early dinner. So far so good.
Wasnt hungry til writing this, now feeling peckish! .

Aveline Tue 16-Aug-22 09:54:30

That's the problem with dieting. It makes you obsessed with food. I did it using 'Huel'. Once I got used to it, it was great and very manageable. I loved the feeling of losing weight and the positive comments from family and friends.
All over now as I gently spread out my flab! At least at Aquafit the flab floats!

silverlining48 Tue 16-Aug-22 12:12:24

Just realised I havnt had breakfast, so it’s porridge, fruit, nuts and yoghurt now instead if at breakfast time. Fish tonight, the lbs should drop off me...if only.
Aveline it’s a strange feeling jumping up and down in the water when the poundage bounces around at the same time.
Remember it well.
Weather report It’s just been raining, at last.

silverlining48 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:28:28

IPadGrandma how are things? Assume you are back home now and feeling a bit meh! I read the notes I made post op and had firhotten it was a good 10 days before I felt well enough/able to have my first tentative walk outside, so hope you are feeling ok now as you begin your recovery.

silverlining48 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:30:07

Giving this a bump as it hasnt got onto Active (again!)

silverlining48 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:31:49
