A friend that has just had covid for the 2nd time has been much sicker than her first time.

She's not yet 40, so still young. Symptoms were respiratory this time, even coughing up blood. Whereas last time, she was just vaguely 'off'.

We most certainly are not almost back where we were before the vaccines came out.

Why do people write these sort of things which will just scare people and have no evidence to support them?

Chestnut Mon 25-Jul-22 17:14:29

Maybe the reason people are getting it worse is because protection from the vaccine has run out. We always knew the vaccine didn't last long due to the virus's damned ability to change all the time.

A vaccine like the measles vaccine can give you protection for years and years because the virus doesn't keep changing. Covid isn't like that. It keeps changing all the time, so the vaccine becomes less effective very quickly. I guess we are almost back to the same place as we were before the vaccines came out.

Sorry you are still feeling so tired Diane7. Unfortunately there is no one answer to your question. The virus takes everyone differently - everyone will experience different symptoms, different levels of illness, from mild to severe, and how long it lasts will vary from person to person and also dependent on the variant you have. You just have to work with how you feel yourself and what’s best for your own recovery. Rest if you can and hope you feel better very soon.

Diane7.

How long was it before you tested negative?

Diane7 Mon 25-Jul-22 16:42:16

I recently tested positive, ached all over, cough, felt dreadful but I am still feeling very tired. How long does this go on for? I am finally negative.

I currently have a v bad cough but have been testing every other day and all negative. Went to a walk in clinic in the town where I am on holiday just to check I don’t have pneumonia or a chest infection (I didn’t). The nurse told me that the tests you buy over the counter don’t pick up the latest omicron variants - you need to order ones from the government website to be absolutely sure.

I am pretty sure that nurse was talking rubbish there are only certain categories of people that can order tests from the government website. Most of us have to buy them from chemists ect.

sazz1 Mon 25-Jul-22 15:23:04

Just to say both times I stayed home for 5 days after contact incase I caught it. Did lots of LF tests all negative and no symptoms.

DSisters both had what they thought was a slight cold and cough 5 weeks ago. Both later tested positive. I visited and in same room for 2 hours but didn't catch it. Both v ill with severe chest infections, aching fatigue etc. DS1 had an infusion as ECV. which helped. Still can't taste or smell properly but that's slowly improving.
DGC visited age 7 with mum for the weekend. Friday night perfectly OK. Saturday afternoon not eating much and complaining of feeling sick and tummy ache but ok in half an hour. Sunday morning bad cold and temperature. Immediate positive result on LF test. They went home
Monday cold and temperature. Tuesday no symptoms LF negative. Back to school Thursday. Nobody caught it not me, OH, or their parents.
It's strange that I haven't caught it yet despite being in close contact with 3 people that had symptoms but didn't know at the time. OH hasn't caught it either and he goes to theatre, chess club, pubs, meetings etc.

Greciangirl Mon 25-Jul-22 14:52:02

Yes, another one here who has it.
I tested positive last Wednesday.

Initially, I had dreadful phlegm along with a cough.

Totally drained of energy. But I put that down to the heat mainly.

It felt like a very bad cold, but it’s much more than that.
Symptoms virtually gone, but terrible tiredness lingers.

I will test tomorrow and hopefully be negative. Very disappointed if it’s not, as I need to go shopping.
Taste and smell just coming back now after one week.

Giving out blood from either end - mouth or anus - means see GP asap.

Hubby & I have avoided it until now. Mine started 3 days before testing positive with headache, sore throat and fatigue but although I still have a cough and nasal congestion don't feel too bad. Hubby on the other hand has been in bed for 3 days. Extreme fatigue and muscle pain, diarrhoea, headache and dizziness. Amazing how it affects us all in so many different ways.
Agree we have become too complacent and not realising some of us will still be extremely ill with it. Mask wearing now feels like a thing of the past and almost feel I'm being ridiculed for wearing one. Have recently returned from Italy where it is still mandatory in certain settings. Perhaps it shobe here too!

Alioop Mon 25-Jul-22 14:10:23

I've had it from last Tuesday, but the positive line very faint this morning. I'd the most hateful headache with all the usual flu type symptoms and I've lost my taste, but nothing like your friend. This is my first time getting it and hearing different stories have been really worried catching it, but with different variants you don't know what you will get. I've friends, the whole family really sick with it and the father is fainting when he gets out of bed.
I was being careful, wearing my mask, washing hands, etc, but the bloomin thing still got me. I'm isolating, I'll do a test tomorrow and after today's result I think it will be negative, well I hope.

rosie1959 Mon 25-Jul-22 14:00:23

You haven’t had to isolate by law since February Candelle it is nothing new
Like other sicknesses we may have we have to use a bit of common sense and stay in for a while. It would impossible to enforce the law when you no longer have to test or report it
I believe some countries like Germany and France may try to inforce isolation but their rates are much higher than ours
Glad you are recovering

Candelle Mon 25-Jul-22 13:43:33

COVID positive here, too.

Am immunosuppressed so it was worrying but the NHS service worked well and I was able to quickly have an antiviral Infusion in hospital on day two.

My symptoms are breathlessness, very sore throat (voice disappeared - husband delighted!) horrible headache and lethargy. Temperature spiked up for 24 hours' but is slowly returning to normal.

I passed this on to Mr C whose temperature was worrying for a day or two plus other similar symptoms to me but we are grateful for nothing worse.

We know exactly from whom and where we caught Covid but there's no point in being cross now.

I was shocked to be told by a doctor that there's no need for us to isolate! Apparently, one can be newly diagnosed and merrily shedding Covid everywhere, perfectly legally.

Those who wanted us to 'get back to normal ' have won the battle (as it obviously doesn't matter who becomes slighty ill, quite sick or who dies).

Oh bloody hell. Will this ever end sad
I’m literally sick to death of being worried sick about DH catching it.

thanks for all those suffering or worrying

Me too, my DH has a dodgy heart and is very casual about avoiding infection

AmberSpyglass Mon 25-Jul-22 13:12:58

Both myself & Mrs AmberSpyglass are fully vaxxed - I came down with it at the end of the week before last and she followed suit. Very scary since she’s clinically vulnerable and I’ve been going to pretty extreme lengths to keep her away from it, but work travel over the past few months has made that impossible.

Luckily mine was a very mild case, and hers doesn’t seem too bad either but I do feel guilty!

The more I see of people's symptoms the more puzzled I get. I caught it December 2020, ended up in ICU but never actually felt ill. I started coughing on Christmas day, tested on Boxing day. Mild cough stopped after 2 0r 3 days so I was very surprised when the results were positive. I simply lost energy and on 3 Jan I couldn't summon up the energy to have a shower I dialled 111 and they booked an ambulance.
I remember thinking it was all a storm in a teapot but I had covid pneumonia and narrowly missed being put on a ventilator.
The worst things for me were the arterial cannulas, the atrocious diarrhoea caused by the medication and the boredom as I didn't have the energy to do anything, not even reading.
I feel desperately sorry for those who are very ill, I remember hearing the dreadful coughs of the other patients and thanking my lucky stars that it wasn't me.
With so many different and varying symptoms it's so hard for the medical profession to handle. So many questions that they're unable to answer. Like why can I still not walk more than 100m without sounding like a steam train? And why do I need so much sleep?
It's going to be many years before they can fully understand the virus in it's many forms let alone treat it, and the associated long covid, effectively.

It’s def not like flu ! I had random symptoms on different days recently, (3x vacc.), finishing with a bout of 24 hour diorrhea- terrible behind the nose type of sore throat. I posted on another thread re something that has flared up to do with the small intestine ( Mesenteric panniculitis) . I of course have been researching (I work in that field) and it seems there are global reports of this condition linked to people who have never had anything wrong before. Numbers are too small to be consistent however. Truly odd. I only tested negative 10 days in husband 14 days in. Left with fatigue 4 weeks later and pain from the above.
It’s good to talk about it though ...

Toula Mon 25-Jul-22 12:34:07

Thank you for all info. I have had most symptoms, some severe, over several months. Doc gave steroids for 7 days - and nearly finished me off! Pharmacist told me to take extra Vit D once. So now going for that along with blended juice drinks of beetroot, apple, celery, carrot, ginger, lemon. Stay safe all.

BeverleyJB Mon 25-Jul-22 12:13:10

The “top” symptoms have changed with each variant, not that the UK government actually bothered to keep the public health messaging up to date. I've attached a screen shot of the symptoms from the Zoe Covid study as of 15 July.

elleks Mon 25-Jul-22 12:05:49

Thought I was getting a cold on Thursday, but started feeling achy, so tested yesterday. Yup, positive. I mostly feel tired, with a rattly cough.
I've avoided it so far, because my DH was asthmatic, so I was very careful (since lost him for unrelated reasons) I've probably not been so careful since he died.

Gillycats Mon 25-Jul-22 12:02:20

I’ve just had it for the 1st time, to my knowledge. It was like a bad cold in many ways, and it’s left me washed out. It’s made me think about booking the flu jab. I really don’t want to succumb to any lergs if I can possibly help it. I still think mask wearing indoors should be mandatory again, it’s such an easy thing for people, who can wear one, to do.
